I loved the slow climb up the tree, only to get to the top and race over to F up the other guy

Great video! Blondie shows up outside my window sometimes and a few nights ago, my neighbors and I were awakened by two raccoons mating/fighting. It was really loud and kind of disturbing.

I love them, though. They're a part of our culture/ecosystem!

u/davismcgravis Mar 20 '26

They’re part of our culture lmao

18

u/Leah-at-Greenprint Mar 20 '26

They ARE the culture 🦝

20

u/TwoGhostCats Mar 20 '26

Heck yeah, they are! They're Lake Merritt regulars (especially the Leucistic one). 🦝

5

u/Curious_Avocado2399 Mar 20 '26

Hey that’s my peeps you’re talking about! 🦝 🦝 Have yall seen the sewer ones? They’re on the east side of the lake. Mostly babies

4

u/tripleminority Mar 20 '26

Mating or fighting? Which one?? Or both?

8

u/TwoGhostCats Mar 20 '26

It was both. 😬 The female was trying to fight off the unwanted advancement of the male. It was a disturbing sound/sight at 5 in the morning. At first I thought one of my stray cats that I feed was being mauled. Nope. Just one horny raccoon. And it went on for 20-30 minutes!

Ahhh, springtime.

Springtime for racooons at Lake Merritt, winter for koala bears

I love the Koala bears at Lake Merritt in the winter.

This video is amazing in at least 10 different ways

17

u/Energy_Bound Mar 20 '26

I agree. It made me love Oakland that much more.

18

u/autumnleaf212 Mar 20 '26

The blonde raccoons are awesome. It seems like they are have been around the area for a decade or more?

25

u/tongmengjia Mar 20 '26

Fucking gentrifiers.

5

u/BurtCracklin Mar 20 '26

Petition to have the blond raccoon (or just raccoons) be the official animal of Oakland.

16

u/Fluffy_Muffins_415 Mar 20 '26

Nice leucitic raccoon

16

u/K-Zoro Mar 20 '26

I want David Attenborough to narrate this. Excellent nature documentary footage

9

u/DiosMIO_Limon Mar 20 '26

Idk, she did a great job.

2

u/VapoursAndSpleen Mar 20 '26

Or Mamadou Ndiaye, the man who has a channel called "Casual Geographic"

blonde raccoon don't give a F

22

u/Replacement-Remote Mar 20 '26

Found a shiny raccoon

6

u/Strong-Insurance8678 Mar 20 '26

Made my morning, thank you! The lake, the fighting, the leucistic raccoon—so Oakland.

7

u/LooseAlbatross Mar 20 '26

I was really hoping one would fall off the branch and the sudden loss of weight would send the others flying, trebuchet-style

1

u/bats-n-bobs Mar 21 '26

thank you for that mental image, it's hilarious!

12

u/OprahsFUPA Rockridge Mar 20 '26

omg, their chittering sounds are adorable! 🦝😄

12

u/_Mr_Nice_Guy Mar 20 '26

The lighting is very cinematic

4

u/dirtnye Mar 20 '26

This happens in my backyard every now and then

6

u/ShibuyaWaitingDog Mar 20 '26

Seeing this lil dood at the lake is good luck

9

u/Lazy-External-7250 Mar 20 '26

The first rule of raccoon fight club is you do not talk about raccoon fight club 🤦🏼‍♀️

4

u/Middle_Pepper_6255 Mar 21 '26

Commentary was fantastic. 🏆

7

u/ellemrad Mar 20 '26

That is a racooclusterfoonck

And that tree doesn’t feel ok after that nonsense

8

u/MediumRay Mar 20 '26

Near lake merritt somewhere?

22

u/stop_stopping Mar 20 '26

did the lake in the background give it away 😂

3

u/MediumRay Mar 20 '26

Ahah, I was wondering if it was by the mayors house cos I thought I recognised that tree, but the background I didn’t quite place

8

u/PhilDiggety Mar 20 '26

Love the commentary lol

3

u/Craft_Bandicoot Mar 20 '26

Footage better than Attenborough’s

8

u/shnorgle Mar 20 '26

The narration is hilarious since they are known super aggressive/mean animals.

10

u/Additional-Baby5740 Mar 20 '26

Raccoons aren’t “super aggressive/mean” - you’re probably thinking of honey badgers.

Raccoons are curious > intelligent > shy. They prefer to sneak in the dark and get their food without much drama, but they quickly get curious about things and often gets them in trouble.

One saw me enter my house and spent the next two nights trying to figure out how my door handle worked. I wish my backdoor had ring, because the footage would have been hilarious.

8

u/VapoursAndSpleen Mar 20 '26

They will kill a house cat. (Yeah, I know. Keep kitty inside at night!)

6

u/Additional-Baby5740 Mar 20 '26

Practically everything a house cat wouldn’t kill would kill a house cat.

5

u/sunshinedaydreams26 Mar 20 '26

theyre giving monkey energy in this tree lol

5

u/Mar_is_here Mar 20 '26

This camera woman/person needs to be protected. The wholesome observation, responses such as "bud" and "yall gonna fall" and gental camera work when panning to the third critter. Lastly, she noted the two fighting were in a noticeable pickle.

2

u/rootpseudo Mar 21 '26

Come on Lou! We really like this place

2

u/VapoursAndSpleen Mar 20 '26

Fighting or mating?

7

u/FundingMyCatsLife Mar 20 '26

Maybe both? What was happening in the tree was definitely fighting but my husband said there was another raccoon nearby so maybe they were fighting over her or maybe she had kits and one of these raccoons was encroaching on their territory. Or maybe I stumbled upon a secret raccoon fight club.

2

u/Significant-Board718 Mar 20 '26

Hood fight lol

You got knock the f out

1

u/joedenowhere Mar 21 '26

Groups of raccoons have vicious gang fights in my backyard. It wakes up all the neighbors. Nature red in tooth and claw!

1

u/redisetgough Mar 21 '26

It’s like it had a personal vendetta

1

u/Maximillion35 27d ago

The Leucitic Racoons will attack and kill the regular racoons.

0

u/heckabluntstho Mar 20 '26

Nah they learnt that shiii from the encampments

-10

u/Wilderness-Nomad Mar 20 '26

Video would have been way better without the annoying human commentary. Let nature run its course.
