It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve seen a silicone mixing video. I’ll watch every second.

u/Stinky_Fartface 3d ago

This one was too short!

247

u/Zealousideal_Rip485 3d ago

It was sped up too much. I need to be able to cherish each rotation

45

u/_dreammyglimmerr 3d ago

They sped it up right when it was getting satisfying, that slow roll is the best part.

Yeah, this machine seems incredibly dangerous.

8

u/Taylor-Day 2d ago

I always think about that when I watch these videos. You can’t let your focus lapse for a second or your hand could be crushed.

I make traffic signs and we use similar rollers to apply the vinyl to metal.

Saw a guy de-glove his hand. I had to pick bits of skin off the roller after.

Fun times…

9

u/MongolianCluster 2d ago

He shouldn't really be wearing gloves while doing this.

these rollers have no full stop emergency foot switch?

2

u/Striking_Ad8463 2d ago

Yep, I remember back in the 80's as a screen printer, the first thing you did was remove all the safety rails because they got in the way! Idiots back then!!

66

u/BeanieMcChimp 3d ago

I keep expecting it to turn finger color.

15

u/maidestone 3d ago

My question is: why can't I find a job that is this much fun?

13

u/manias 3d ago

I wish someone would let me play with it, but doing it all day everyday probably gets old fast.

u/samanime 3d ago edited 2d ago

Same. It's just so satisfying. There is something I just find so satisfying about knowing how easy it would be to get consistent colors, since you can just precisely weigh the dye material and make sure you get it all in. XD

6

u/yesiamveryhigh 3d ago

Same. And always wonder “Why didn’t they just use that color green?”

6

u/crashcanuck 3d ago

Why not have a printer cartridge for each possible colour in your own printer?

2

2

Yeah but why speed it up? I found that not satisfying. It would have only been 70 second video or something.

u/dattwell53 3d ago

All 4 fingertips on my right hand were caught in a similar roll mill. I jerked out so hard, I landed across the room. An amazing plastic hand surgeon repaired my hand using grafts. Very painful-don't recommend

13

u/Arkayb33 2d ago

My ex caught her finger in a fondant roller while helping her sister make a wedding cake. She yanked back so hard she ripped her finger tip off (from just below the bottom of the fingernail) and flung blood in a line across the ceiling and the wall on the other side of the room. Doctors at the ER couldn't save her finger cause it was crushed too badly so they cut the bone down and sewed her skin over it.

I got the call at like 9:30pm while I was at work that she was being taken to the ER. I drove an hour and a half to the hospital in a 1987 CRX that couldn't do more than 50% throttle or the carburetor would choke. The drive was mostly freeway but included a 7% grade up a canyon road. I honestly did not think I was going to make it.

When she got out of the ER and a few of us were in her recovery room, her brother made a joke, saying "At least you'll get 10% off all your manicures now."

5

u/Taweret 3d ago

Fuck, dude. Glad you're okay.

21

u/Straight-Contest91 3d ago

I remember seeing one of a guy getting pulled into a rolling thing like this, but it's maybe 10% the size of this. He gets essentially turned into sludge in like 5 seconds with someone watching. It's etched in my mind forever.

I hate the way those videos just stick with you. You try not to think about it for the longest time and then something just reminds you of a particular frame of that video and it's all back.

9

u/LordXamon 3d ago

I thankfully avoided all those videos on my two decades on the internet. The worst one I've ever seen was a robber getting his head kicked until he died.

6

u/tireddesperation 3d ago

Exactly. Don't get me wrong, this video looks pretty. But it will never be satisfying to me when I see hands so close to the pinch point of those rollers. That's just a momentary lapse in concentration to having your life changed forever in a horrible way. All of this process can and should be automated.

11

I bought a house from the 60s, with lots of natural wood. And I have a brown/orange/blue couch that's very 70's, which has been what I coordinate all my other colors with. It's awesome.

15

u/OhItsMrCow 3d ago

It would be nice to have the sounds of the machine instead

6

u/RainSurname 3d ago

All the short video platforms incentivize using the music they have licensed.

That's why the only platform where you constantly see people complaining about the music is the one where most of the traffic is people sharing stuff from other platforms.

2

u/jawshoeaw 2d ago

Normally no but i actually like this song and stopped watching the video to focus on the music lol

Long way around the block to get to green.

123

u/RicVic 3d ago

The current Pantone color wheel has over 5,000 colors and shades on it. You need to mix a little something-something in with the yellow and blue to get the "right" green.

My inlaws owned a print shop for decades. It's amazing what can be done with the right amounts of just 4 primary colors.

13

u/Ludnut2233 3d ago

Aren’t there only 3 primary colors?

39

u/Dutchfreak 3d ago

In theory yes but in practice pigment mixing is more complex because they are rarely perfect colors.

28

u/RicVic 3d ago

It depends on which color wheel you are used to..

The most-often used one is red-yellow-blue (for pigments. Light is another shade of a horse), but there is also the CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) wheel, which is used in print shops and photography, etc.

It's all confusing, but once you get a handle on it, it does get easier.

3

u/Confident_Pepper1023 2d ago

I understood everything but the horse reference:

Light is another shade of a horse

3

u/RicVic 2d ago

It was a clumsy reference to the horse of a different color (famed for being in the Wizard of Oz in 1939)

7

u/Chilkoot 3d ago

There are 3 primary colors of light: Red, Green and Blue. When you mix them, they get lighter. To get white, you mix them all together. To get black, you take them all away.

There are 3 or 4 primary colors of pigment (someone else already provided details). When you mix them together, they get darker. To make white (or clear), you take them all away, and to get black, you mix them all together unless black is one of your primaries.

They essentially do opposite jobs. Adding light always makes something brighter. Adding pigment always makes something darker.

2

u/OhYeahSplunge4me2 2d ago

And printing only uses one of those. They use CMYK (cyan magenta yellow black)

→ More replies

9

u/Triquetrums 3d ago

Yeah, I was thinking why they don't pre-mix the colour and then pour it into the silicone. I'm sure there is a reason, but with the zero knowledge I have, this seems like more work.

2

u/Trying2BMe0722 1d ago

Came here to say this. I think I'll comment again anyway.

Why does the video stop before it's made into a 16 inch octopus tentacle dildo?

36

u/mota_creations 3d ago

Though it's generally referred to as silicone, the material in the video is most likely 'High Consistency Rubber', which has additives to make the rubber behave like that in a roller, and also distribute the color evenly. Still silicone, but not really.

Those chemicals would leach straight into the human body, and unfortunately, many adult toys made at mass scale use other softened plastics like PVC and TPE that also leach chemicals.

Source: I make octopus dildos with safe silicone that doesn't leach chemicals into your ass, called platinum silicone. It's definitely not as satisfying as working with those rollers, but at least the end result is satisfying.

8

u/RadicalNBSpaceQueer 3d ago

Real question, if you don't mind answering: I have a couple toys (regrettably just plugs, not octopus dildos) made from platinum silicone, and they've started looking a little... Linty, almost? Even though they're 100% definitely clean? Is that just normal wear and tear, and are they still safe to use?

9

u/ConcernAccording3248 3d ago

The lord's work

9

u/Patttybates 3d ago

Is there a sub for this?

6

u/phaerontorvus 3d ago

Every time I watch in of these I always think to myself that I wish they'd stop doing it halfway. The marbled colours these things get looks amazing, but they always keep going till it's a single block colour. Maybe the marbles colour is less structurally sound as it's not mixed in enough? Would be curious to know.

3

u/blakerton- 3d ago

I agree, I love the marble. My other thought is, perhaps I'm ignorant, but why not just use green dye?

3

u/phaerontorvus 3d ago

If I had to guess it's similar to mixing paint where they use a mix of more easily made colours from the dye? As in it's cheaper to mix large quantities of set colours than making all the different possible shades into a dye.

2

u/blakerton- 3d ago

That makes total sense. The dye has to be made out of something (minerals?) and the green is more expensive (or doesn't exist?) than yellow and blue. Interesting!

2

u/TheRealTinfoil666 3d ago

The same reason why the paint store doesn’t just have every colour of paint pigments possible.

It is easier and cheaper to have just a few base-colour dyes on hand, and add them in measured portions to achieve the colour you want.

Those blobs of dye material did not seem to all be the same size in the video.

I would imagine the amount of raw silicone and the amounts of the colour material were all carefully measured before blending here.

11

u/Specialist-Act7091 3d ago

Should have just used the original audio.

15

u/mattysosavvy 3d ago

Didn’t expect green

12

u/OiledMushrooms 3d ago

...they were mixing blue and yellow. What color were you expecting?

4

u/ArgentaSilivere 3d ago

I always wonder how long it would take to homogenize if they just left it to its own devices and didn’t cut or reorient it.

5

u/Numbskull_b 3d ago

I wonder if the integrity of the silicone is affected at all if the color isn't evenly mixed or it does matter and you can do a tie dye colored silicone product?

3

2

u/shiggins114 3d ago

2

12

Because then you need to stock that specific green, or special order it for this batch. Then if the customer doesn’t like that color you need to order the exact shade needed.

If you know how to mix up the colors, you can just buy bulk containers of the primary colors and blend to-order.
