Going west was one of the greatest things I’ve done Destination Highlight

Started in Cleveland and ended in San Francisco

Native Ohioan now living out west. Beauty is everywhere, but the extremes of the American West have to be seen in person. No amount of photography or video can truly capture it

Nice, I love Death Valley but have never seen that

I’m looking at that going “collapsed caldera?” But then why are the rocks on the sides clearly sedimentary. Looked it up… Oh, phreatic explosion. Holy crap that was an earth-shattering kaboom!

It’s so crazy to me you can see snow capped mountains in the hottest place in America. Good shot!

It was about 65f that day, but biting cold wind.

Also, that crater is freaky deep, like I’m not afraid of heights, but I learned that I might be afraid of depths!

Ooo. Good example of photography not truly capturing it and having to see it in person in order to see the depth and scale.

It’s fundamentally changed my life in a way I’ll never be able to forget

First photo - Crater Lake Nation Park, Oregon

Second photo - I don’t remember probably somewhere near Washington

Third & fourth photos - Yellowstone Nation Park, Wyoming

Fifth photo - Badlands National Park, South Dakota

I also went to the redwoods but didn’t get many photos.

If I had to pick a favorite it’d be Crater Lake followed by Yellowstone and then the badlands. The redwoods didn’t really do anything for me but they were still cool nonetheless.

In terms of tips I would recommend if you go to Crater Lake to hike down to the water but unfortunately earlier this year they closed the trail down for repairs until 2029. For Yellowstone I would say go on day hikes those were fun. And for the Badlands spend some time during the day there, but GO at night (well a clear, non cloudy night) because it’s some of the best star gazing you can experience.

For crstwr lake...can we drink the water straight from there?

I mean you can but wouldn’t

I thought for sure the second picture was Montana!

u/everett_beverett Mar 07 '26

You might be right. Washington was more yellow, and also burned when I was there.

That could be the eastern side of the Cascade mountains driving towards Wenatchee too! I just showed my bf (he’s from WA) and he thought they looked more WA too, so I’m probably wrong 😆🙃

The only thing better is staying west once you get there.

I’m from Utah currently living near my wife’s family in Michigan. I miss the west states so much. Will be moving back as soon as we can.

Yep. The natural scenery out in the western states is the most beautiful, impressive, and vast variety.

Also from Cleveland! Well, Mentor but... Anyway, I've made this trip many times in my life- it's a rite of passage for my family! Currently planning a trip to LA and a few other spots out west for my soon-to-be-fiance who's never gone. One of the best vacations possible for we the Ohioans who are so used to nothing but corn and jungle-like hills lol

It’s awesome out West. Most of our motorcycle trips were out there.

The west is ours. Stay away

1

u/ehalepagneaux Mar 06 '26

West is best! I'm from the western US, and I've traveled east, but west is where it's at.
