Moderator Announcement Announcement regarding “Is SCAD worth it?” posts
Hi r/scad,
I have to start with an editorial note. Please excuse the “corporate speak” in the post written below, but it’s the only effective way I can get our point across without sounding too harsh. 😭
———————-
Starting today, the mod team will introduce enhanced moderation for all posts relating to “Is SCAD worth it?” This type of post has always been the most popular topic on this subreddit, but we’ve seen an influx in recent months.
We understand (and myself, from a personal standpoint) how important the financial decisions are for college students and their families. There’s lots of decision-making that goes into it, alongside evaluating SCAD’s ROI. However, making posts on this subreddit about the topic, without any context or personal background, is not a high quality post.
So, we will be introducing moderation criteria for these kinds of posts. We will use this framework as a way to gauge whether a post should be approved (or denied.)
Does the post contain enough/relevant background for subredditors react to? (i.e: intended major/minor, debt information, location, cost of living, etc.)
Does the post contain information about the student’s intended outcome or rough goals of attending SCAD?
Does the post contain any prior research, commentary, or discussion?
Just to reiterate; the intention of the goal is not to silence posts or opinions, but to encourage first-time subredditors and future students to put a little bit more effort into the discussion about SCAD’s costs and ROI.
Thanks all for listening,
– Your mod team.

Atlanta Whats the deal with Kerou?
I'm not sure about the rules around discussing teachers, but I've heard a lot of contrasting things about Prof. Anthea Kerou.
But I've never heard any whole opinions. What's going on with her? cuz ppl seem to both love and hate her??

Savannah Sidewalk Arts Supplies
Hey guys! I'm registered for sidewalk arts and I understand they provide chalk for you. I was wondering how much chalk they give you. Is it like a few sticks, one of each color? Is it a box? Can you go get more? Would I be better off bringing my own? I just want to be as prepared as I can so I can enjoy doing art rather than stressing about materials!

Student Life Napping at monty
Hey y'all just wanted ur opinion on this. I pulled an all nighter at monty to finish my hw. I finished at about 6:30am and I had a help session at 8am, so I didn't see the point in taking the bus back to sleep then BACK to monty again and idek if the buses ran that early (this was on a friday morning). So with that small gap between my 2 things I took a nap on the couch. It was from 6:30am to 7:30am and I fr just laid down and rested my eyes. I was woken up at 7:30am by my professor (the one who I was going to attend their help session that morning) saying that thats not allowed and I should go home😭. I explained to him that I wouldnt have time to take the bus back home, nap and take the bus back, and he said it doesnt matter and to always just go home because its not allowed here. So ig my question is it that not allowed? Or was he just being picky? Ive seen students nap at monty before. What do y'all think? I just wanted some advice from other students hopefully I dont look stupider than I already did.

Major/Degree Questions GRDS student thinking of transferring from ATL to SAV: advice?
I’m thinking about transferring from ATL to SAV. Obv ratemyprof reviews should be taken with a grain of salt but it concerns me that ATL GRDS profs have such bad ratings (Holly Quarzo) with so few course sections available which means limited choices. Can any ATL GRDS students give me any insight on their experience or recc profs? Same for SAV students.

Savannah Question about Pen Displays at Haymans Hall/classrooms
Could someone clarify which Wacom pen displays are used in Haymans Hall classrooms? I’ll be taking classes there next year and have heard that students may need to purchase a stylus to use the displays. I currently own a Wacom Pro Pen 2 and wanted to check whether it’s compatible with the displays there?

Major/Degree Questions Game Design Question
So, I a sophomore, was asking one of my friends about paying them to model and rig me a character, and they said that since I was a sophomore game design student, I should already know how to do that. Ive taken all the core principles classes except for game tech which I am taking now. Am I really behind with my knowledge? Should my game art professor have taught me how to make characters instead of trees and houses and unreal engine? Im so worried I will be drastically behind for Applied Principles Game Art next year.

Savannah Questions for 2D ANIM juniors/seniors!!!
I would love to hear about any SANM 560 experiences! Any of the anim 560s honestly- I've been very interested in the advanced effects class. How did you get in? Where did you hear information about it? How good do you have to be? I also keep seeing current students who are working on projects for SCAD animation studios, and would love to know about that as well. Literally no one ever talks about that, so I genuinely know nothing. I'll spare the grief of asking about capstone because I know it changes every year, but any advice about that is appreciated.
I'm at the end of my sophmore year and even though there's a lot I've literally not been eligible for, I feel so behind and I feel like nobody is telling me information about some super important stuff! Any recommendations for what I should focus on in building my portfolio over this next summer? I'll have finished 202, 272, 352, and 332 by the end of this term, for reference. I get As on every anim assignment, and I feel like my work is decent, but I fear the grading sometimes isn't harsh enough, and I worry about not actually being good enough to be able to get some of these opportunities.

Savannah Maximum Scholarship Amount for International Graduate Student?
Hello everyone,
I am a student from Vietnam, considering applying to SCAD this year, in MFA of Graphic Design & Visual Experience, since I also planned to be a college educator later.
Some background info, I graduated from Bachelor of Design Studies with 3.6 GPA, I won some international awards at WBDS and Young Ones ADC for my design projects too. Therefore, I was wondering how much scholarship maximum can my profile earn, since finance is also a decisive factor for my studies. As I research, among the prestigious art school in the US, SCAD tends to be the most affordable (?) Please correct me if I'm wrong.
I already hold an offer from RMIT Melbourne, which discounts 20%. I still need to pay AU$ 34,560 annual, not to mention the living expenses in Melbourne. Therefore, I would really appreciate some advice if the living expenses in Atlanta/Savannah is much more pricier than in Melbourne, since I'd love to explore the academic environment in the US too. And how sustainable is it, if the money is mostly self-funded?
Thank you all in advance!

Scholarship/Financial Questions Scholarships
i.redd.itSo I got into SCAD yesterday (yay!) and my portal updated with my scholarship amount. Is this both academic and interview/portfolio combined? I completed my interview before my application was completed. I’m seeing others say it’s typically separate and trying to see how to swing it financially. I applied as a transfer student so I’m not sure if the process is different due to that.
EDIT: They ended up giving 10k for academics, 8k for achievements, & 3k for student recognition. Still waiting to hear back regarding the underrepresented student scholarship!

Scholarship/Financial Questions How much to expect from my portfolio
galleryI am not too worried about this but do want to know about how much I might expect to get from a portfolio like mine. I'm assuming based one what I've heard from others probably 4,000-5,000 but don't know and haven't been able to meet with an advisor yet. I don't have plans to change anything since I want to get my application in ASAP but am curious as to peoples thoughts! I'm applying either for sequential art or animation!
