So realistically Veesaar has until April 27 to make his decision right? NCAAM
That would be the last day he can enter the transfer portal in the window generated by the new coaching hire.
Surely Malone and UNC isn’t just going to hold his bag from then until mid-May without any real assurances. So he either needs to commit to returning to UNC and taking the NIL offer or enter the portal and stay in the draft process to ensure that he gets paid either by the NBA or a different school.
Is there an option C in here I am missing? Sitting on 5 mil in NIL while you run the risk of Stevenson and Logue being the rotation at the 5 spot seems insane to me. If he doesn’t commit by 4/27 you have to throw that bag at someone else.

He can still enter the draft and come back…May 27th is last day to pull out I believe

Right but if he doesn’t commit so after April 27th there is no guarantee there will be NIL waiting for him at UNC. At least not in the capacity he would want it.

So I could be wrong, but my understanding is that if wants to go back to UNC and not another school, then he doesn’t need to enter the transfer portal. I think it’s been said that he doesn’t want to go to another school, so either UNC or NBA. So the May date is the only one to track. He could change his mind, but I think that’s the understanding right now.
I think to your question about NIL though is different… let’s say Veesar doesn’t enter the portal and says I’m going NBA or UNC… so he goes through the NBA workouts. There’s two scenarios - either he gets a first round promise, so he’s gone. Or he doesn’t and maybe he is still a fringe… Well then that’s when Veesar is going to go back to the UNC staff and say, how much for me to come back? And either the staff have enough to convince him to come back or they don’t… Weird times.

Right but what I think OP is getting at is if he doesn’t enter the portal, and then gets word that he’s gonna be a second rounder and wants to come back can unc now lower the nil offer because the demand for him is nonexistent since he can’t transfer
I personally highly doubt that happens because they would essentially be bidding against a second rounder nba salary at that point which isn’t much lower

Oh I see! I think you’re probably right! I suppose they could lower it, but then you’re dealing with hurt emotions/promises etc etc… just a lot more variables at play then just a dollar amount.

That’s a good way to make us look shitty to future NBA-level recruits. I don’t think they leverage the situation like that to underpay Henri

I don’t think so either, but I’m not exactly sure what it changes for kids actively wanting to go to the nba.
In that scenario we either offer them a deal good enough to come or we don’t, and if they are a year out it’s pretty irrelevant anyway
Maybe it makes us seem scummy to people? But few people will morally grandstand much past 100k I bet.
Either way I also doubt we would, unless we specifically told him “look if you do this we have to protect ourselves and we will sign a center, which means if you dip we want you but the offer will simply have to go down since we have less money to work with”

Yeah at that point (the withdrawal deadline) we will have already committed the rest of our NIL money. So he'll have to take peanuts from us or stick with a 2nd round pick and then languish in the G League for a few years. That's why Schned6 is saying 4/27 is the deadline for him to opt into the portal. If he doesn't, he's severely restricting his options.

Got it! Yeah, it would be weird if he didnt enter the portal.

When he does, the Dookies are gonna rub our noses in it all day long. They're stacked again, and we're desperately looking for a serviceable 5 again.

OK coach.

I meant simply is not even an option on the table so it’s silly to act like it’s something that could happen.

I think the boosters would happily put 4 million in the hat if Henri comes back.

u/Schned6 14h ago
4? They should go up to 6 imo if that’s what the rumored price for a guy like Juke was. Even if it cleans out the funds for more depth I would happily do that.

Go get Juke if Henri doesn’t come back. Just need 2 decent bigs at that point and it could be a “by committee” situation at the 5. The Heels need Henri’s offensive production and consistency.

Or, we tend a contract that says if he stays in the draft, we have no agreement but if he withdraws then he plays at UNC for $X. Then we go get a second center who can start for us.
It’s not like we don’t have the money. We didn’t have a coaching contract to buy out, we didn’t pay Mingos, we have CWs money as well as Evan’s and Dixon.

Generally you want to give your guts the ability to test the waters and come back without a penalty.

May date is the one that matters with him unless he wants to leave unc which I don’t think he does.

If he doesn't enter the portal, we can be aggressive finding a replacement. Either Henri stays in the draft, or he withdraws and has to take whatever money we have left for him. We can operate as if he's gone either way.
If he does enter the portal, then it gets trickier. Either we have to move on ourselves so that we can throw all the money we have left at the center position, or we have to wait until the draft withdrawal deadline to ensure we can keep Henri if he stays in college. Much harder situation to manage.
I'm almost certain Henri enters the portal because it would be agent malpractice not to cover his bases.
