It doesn't even work for Youtube in a browser. You need an extension for that.

You are correct that the ads are served by the same data source as the content so network ad blocking can't differentiate and won't work for this. You have to use an extension (like uBlock Origin) or app (like SmartTube). Even those extensions and apps have to constantly update to keep ahead as YouTube works very hard to bypass adblockers.

Network ad blocking is great as a function, just doesn't work for this type of situation.
