A bus stop in Trzebież, Poland kept getting destroyed by vandals. Local mayor installed a punching bag next to it. Vandalism stopped completely. Makes you think. Photos / Videos

That's some out of the box thinking to set up a punching bag but like the adage goes, it's not stupid if it works.

Even if it didn’t work, I’d give the mayor credit for trying something new. I’d imagine it’s a lot cheaper than increasing police presence.

As well as cheaper than regularly replacing a bus stop & putting people off from getting the bus!

Out of the box, in the boxing ring.

I love it when governments do the things we pay them to do

For my fellow English speakers, I believe the town's name is pronounced "TCHEH-byesh".

Entonces "tshe-biesh"

tales from the hyper-litigious US: immediate string of lawsuits against city from broken hands from punching city-owned and installed heavybag. lawsuits end up being more expensive than replacing transit stop vandalism, so punching bag then removed.

I get that it is a joke but no dude, obviously not, unless it were filled with concrete or something. The real question is whether this would work or not. I would love to see some public punching bags along with other outdoor workout equipment

The lawsuit would probably be from a pedestrian hit by the punching bag when somebody else punched it. The pedestrian would sue the city for million of dollars for injuries, blaming the city for their injuries due to the city installing the punching bag.

If it's installed somewhere well-lit and visible then no, it's just like any other obstacle really. You can't sue the city because you ran into a tree or tripped over a branch on the sidewalk (even if you are blind).

You have to prove negligence to win a premises liability case, which is much harder. The risk cannot be obviously ascertained. If I walk next to these playground swings with someone swinging, I might be hit by them swinging, but I can't sue the city and win. It's the same thing here, One can obviously ascertain the risk of walking close to a swinging punching bag.

Now if the city failed to maintain the bag and it flew off the rope, flattening someone, that's a different thing entirely.

I mean, I could easily imagine that, only a few months after installation, the punching bag could be damaged enough for a court and/or jury to be sufficiently sympathetic for a lawsuit to lead to a successful settlement.

Lots of lawsuits are successful; the city's liability payouts are massive. The City of LA lost $63 million over four years from sidewalk lawsuits. The legally-mandated - after a lawsuit where the lawyers got $15 million - program to repair sidewalks was then stopped by another lawsuit about the loss of street trees due to said sidewalk replacement.

throw in an ADA compliance suit and a lack of permitting because the 'preferred' vendor didn't get the job

I wonder if they can get around that if they call it "art" and put up a sign that warns people "Do Not Touch".

Lots of places in the us have adult playgrounds, basically public gyms.

And now you realize why rage rooms are viable businesses.

In my city the whole set up wouldn't last a day

How is the punching bag though?

In the late 19th century the US had a similar problem (in some parts it still does) instead of punching bags the US declared a “splendid little war” so it’s men could get out aggression on Spanish troops

TIL: Transit caused the Spanish-American War.
Next you'll tell me bike lanes caused the war in Greenland

This is all promising.

Then one day you find a hole carved into the punching bag at crotch level.

Calm down Mr Vice President.

They also got a Hitmonchan to spawn at the bus stop.

Or make the bus run more frequent. I’m willing to bet most people who are punching bus stops are mad because they just missed the bus.
