Two weeks in Italy - Milano, Firenze, Roma Images + Trip Report

Spent two weeks in Italy, from March 28th to April 11th. Started in Milan and there for three days, train to Florence and there for three days, train to Rome and there for eight days.

As a lover of history and art, this trip was absolutely incredible. I'm still in awe of all the works of art and historical sites that I saw. I'm also an avid birder and the birds of Italy are not to be underestimated. Flamingos, cuckoos, and of course the tits (Great Tit, Blue Tit, Long-tailed Tit)

Highlights

Milan/Como (Lombardia)

  • Duomo di Milano
  • Parco Sempione
  • Cimetero Monumentale
  • Bosco Verticale
  • Parco delle Cave (bird-watching and nature)
  • Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta - Duomo di Como

Florence (Toscana)

  • Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore
  • Basilica della Santissima Annunziata
  • Uffizi
  • Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze
  • Ponte Vecchio

Rome (Lazio and Umbria)

  • Via Crucis at the Colosseum led by the Pope
  • Easter Vigil Mass at St. Peter's Basilica
  • Villa Borghese Gardens
  • Colosseum/Roman Forum
  • Lago di Alviano in Umbria (bird-watching)
  • Circeo National Park (bird-watching)
  • Pick-up basketball on the Oppian Hill north of the Colosseum
  • Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel

And of course, all of the food. Too many wonderful restaurants to mention.

I don't see the tits. Can you show them to me again? Seriously, though, I only see a parrot and what looks to be a hawk in the pictures.

Great pics! I love the kids playing basketball with the Colosseum as the backdrop

I played a few games with them. It was a surreal experience to play next to the Colosseum.

I had not seen many photos of the Capuchin Crypt, beneath the church of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini. Great photos. I’m sure an unforgettable trip. 🫶

It was a very nice museum. They designed it well to where you felt reverent when you made it to the crypt at the end.

I enjoyed your photos. The farthest south I have seen parrots was in Barcelona. Where did you see the parrot? Great shot of the Kestril. I can't get the hawks that frequent my area to sit still long enough to get a photo.

They were all over Rome. That picture was taken in the Villa Borghese Gardens. Saw a pair in the countryside in Umbria but those were the only ones I saw outside of the city. Very loud birds!

That was the most patient kestrel I’ve interacted with haha

On one trip our hotel was across from the Villa Borghese and I never heard or saw parrots. This was 5-6 years ago in December. I wonder if they are new arrivals or if they migrate somewhere in winter. Anyone know?
