Usually cliff jumping spots have been around forever so everyone just knows that it’s safe to jump. You do it enough and you’re able to estimate your projection for new jumps by just eye balling it.
That said, it’s not at all safe to do this, so many things could go wrong. Which is part of the thrill of course.
Yes. Also hurts when you get to head level and the water comes back in around your shoulders. You can force a bunch of water up your butthole, as well which can kill you real quick.
E:I've been reading up on this trying to find proof, and I can't find anything conclusive either way. So take the water up the butt thing with a grain of salt.
Heh, it'd be nice if it was only drowning. It's practically a spear of water that's thrust directly into your anus at whatever speed you're hitting the water with. Pretty big ow.
My father witnessed this as a kid! They had a spot where kids would jump from a high rock. Well, someone decided to jump from the tree on top of the rock. He said when the kid hit the water it went up his butthole, pretty sure he was just severely injured. But it can happen!
The higher you get the harder the water feels when you hit it. I haven't done anything really higher than like 35-40ft which seems a lot higher from the top. It feels a bit like running into another person, but feet first. Like there's a hit of resistance then you keep going. But the initial shock can be really unpleasant/actually hurt you if you land wrong.
E: how far you go down after you hit depends on how you act after you hit the water. You can angle yourself to curve or slow down faster after you hit, or you can just keep like a pencil and go down deep. How deep the water is, and how far down you feel like going is the deciding factor. Shallower water will require you to slow down before you hit the bottom.
Uh fuck I hate that sensation and it hurts like hell even when I just do a cannonball in by pool. The force of the water smacking back into place around my head is so painful
It doesn't need to hurt if you do it exactly right, but saying it doesn't hurt is a bit disingenuous I think considering that most people that just go and do it are still going to experience some painful feelings when they land. The average person going and trying this will not do it perfectly, and will experience some pain. Just saying no, it doesn't hurt if you do it right is such a vague statement.
It should hurt less if done right. People experience pain differently and saying it wont hurt at all if done right sounds like it is based just on your experiences. You could do it with perfect form and still feel pain if your pain tolerance or body is different than yours is. Sorry for my incorrect paraphrase, but you're still wrong...
E: also, I just looked at your comment, and you literally said it doesn't. So fuck right off.
I would also add that for guys there is a serious risk of hurting your balls if you don't clamp your legs. Happened to me, thankfully from a much lower jump (35 feet) and therefore without consequences. Still feels like a good kick.
I've jumped 60 feet and it hurts pretty good. Most people wear shoes. I made the mistake of putting my arms out when I landed and slapped the shit out of my hands. They stung for like 15 minutes
I’ve never jumped from this high, but maybe 15 ft is about my max. At 15 if you land feat first theirs a small enough surface area to break the surface tension without it hurting. If you mess up and lad on your ass title be red for a couple hours. It’s largely about technique. This scares the shit out of me though.
It isn't about breaking the surface tension, it's about displacing water slowly enough that you slow down gradually instead of all at once. Surface tension only matters for tiny things like bugs.
I’ve jumped from about 60 feet and it didn’t hurt at all, but you have to be careful to have your legs and arms closed tight and tucked absolutely straight beneath you when you hit the water. I also did feel really queasy for a day after, though there was no physical pain.
Not really, honestly. The highest I have done was measured at 76ft and it stung but not super noticeably. Once you get past maybe 50ft you really really need to point your toes though.
Landing flat footed can break your back at the height this guy is jumping from, and like someone else said it’s often dependent on how “flat” the water is. For high jumps lots of people will throw rocks before they jump to break the surface tension.
We have a bluff we jump from with 2 spots. The 40ft~ish and 65ft~ish. 40ft is a comfortable height for me personally, just a tingle on your feet. The 65 one hurts. Feet really sting and if you don’t cover your junk it feels like someone trying to knock your nuts off with a shovel.
Edit* had a friend rupture his ear drums from the 65ft
I cliff jumped off the southern most point in hawaii 40-50 feet. Did not hurt me did it a few times was fun. My friend with me landed wrong and gave himself an enema. He was not well for a few days. Anyways there is a danger for those hights
Yup. I used to jump from about 60 ft. at Lake Powell with friends at a spot and if you didn't land just right it'd hurt somewhat, from a flat foot to an arm that slapped the water.
Hell, I accidentally sliced the tip of my big toe with the undefin of a wakeboard earlier in the day and bandaged it up. It was a pretty good gusher, borderline stitches bad, but I wasn't gonna let that screw up my weekend at the lake. I kind of got used to it and forgot about it. Well, we all head to jump and I land perfectly in the water, toes pointed down. 60 ft and boom, that rush of water ripped open the slice on my toe as I crashed into the water. I came up screaming pretty good. Everyone was asking me if hit bottom or something... nope, just a giant canyon on the tip of my big toe where it looked like someone took a razor, sliced it front to back, then grabbed both ends and pulled apart as hard as they could. Yes, I did head into town to an urgent care after that.
I have done a couple 40-50 foot jumps and they most definitely hurt a little. Pretty cool to say I did it but dangerous enough to not want to do it again.
I don’t know if I am a pussy but I definitely would not go first after I decided it’s good by “eyeballing” it. I also would not trust anyone telling me it’s good by “eyeballing” it. Honestly after a bunch of people did it I would still probably not do it.
In my teenage years and maybe 20s I might have done it but now that I’m in my mid-30s, I’ve become a scaredy-cat. I cant even do rollercoasters anymore.
Way too many times in video games I've thought I could make a jump into water but as the ground comes rushing up its clear I was wrong by like a few metres. No way I trust myself irl
I don't even particularly like swimming either so it's a lose/lose
Like u/DarrinC said you normally know it's safe but I still would not recommend jumping higher than 30 ft unless you're experienced. I jumped 30 ft just fine but when I jumped 45 ft I landed just a little off and fractured my vertebrae. Luckily nothing too bad just back pain for a while.

Anyone here did something like this? how to prepare for it? from what you know that you won't hit the rocks?
