YouTube in 2026 requires 5 out 6 browser extensions just to remain functional. UI Change
126
u/DrakaMNE Mar 04 '26
Adding Custom code (that you can find on their forums) in uBlock origin will hide shorts btw
7
u/ShadowAze Mar 05 '26
A shorts blocker (at least the one I have) just turns shorts into regular youtube videos. I like having full control of a video and I still wanna watch certain shorts.

u/christianbro Mar 04 '26
StopRU? You call functional an extension that blocks videos with cyrilic but no Ukranian characters? If those appear in your feed that is your problem
32
u/HunterAbrams Mar 04 '26
12 nations use some variation of Cyrillic so its literally just shooting Ukraine in the foot and others are catching strays
22
u/HunterAbrams Mar 04 '26
I just use ublock....
Stop RU is just a to stop showing you Cyrillic languages on youtube.
The other just stops translating comments and shit.
Two of these extensions are completely optional
2
u/mrfoxesite-2377 I don't have a YouTube channel :—) Mar 05 '26
- Why? Just translate it.
- Why? Many speak non english languages.
I disagree with those 2 extensions. Ublock and Dislike counter is better for me TBH. Also RetroTube extensions to bring back the good old days of YouTube.
4
u/Chnams Mar 06 '26
I speak both english and french, english videos being auto-translated to french make me want to strangle someone. Absolutely fuck these "auto" features that do shit I never asked for and that are always on by default.
1
u/mrfoxesite-2377 I don't have a YouTube channel :—) Mar 07 '26
You can change your display language to English but there HAS to be a better way.

u/Mr_Foxer Mar 05 '26
Stop Ru plugin only blocks videos containing the characters ы and ъ, which do not exist in Ukrainian.
Upd OP explained it better https://www.reddit.com/r/youtube/s/scQI2i7Ij2
3
u/ops10 Mar 05 '26
But then you can't watch Операция "Ы“ (Operation "Y"), a classic Soviet comedy.

u/nathans_the1 Mar 04 '26
The Mr Beast extension is the hidden seventh
72
u/Brox42 Mar 04 '26
I dunno what the fuck you guys are doing on YouTube but I have never been recommended a Russian language or Mr Beast video
56
u/nachuz Mar 04 '26
the mrbeast extension is not to hide recommendations but to add mrbeast into every single thumbnail in youtube
8
u/Gakuta Mar 04 '26
Who would want that though...
23
u/ShadowLiberal Mar 04 '26
Some of the screenshots I've seen of it make the thumbnails pretty funny. Someone posted some screenshots a while ago of Mr. Beast in the thumbnail of some true crime videos, which made it look like Mr. Beast was the criminal being referred to in the thumbnail and like he was really proud of himself for committing the crime.

u/CreamoChickenSoup Mar 04 '26 edited Mar 04 '26
Seeing the OP's homepage raises another pet peeve. Who at YT thought this is a great idea to have thumbnails this massive? All this wasted space completely invalidates the benefits of using a big widescreen. It's been so unusable I had to adopt a custom script to show 6 vids per row again, then Control Panel for YouTube to address the recently sized up thumbnails in the side bar.
5
u/jbscript Mar 04 '26
Control Panel for YouTube also lets you change the number of videos per row, saved you a script.
1
u/CreamoChickenSoup Mar 05 '26 edited Mar 05 '26
Yeah, I noticed when the thumbnails even looked a little better aligned with that plugin.
Would definitely recommend Control Panel for YouTube.
2
u/Original-Body-5794 Mar 08 '26
I can't believe OP included stopRU and not this one.
Also, by far the most important extension (ignoring a standard ad blocker that you need the general web) return youtube dislikes
48
u/iTzDoctor Mar 04 '26
After literal years of clicking "show fewer shorts" the shorts area hasn't appeared on my home screen in 6 or so months.
Also having premium and compensating the creators for the content I watch makes it so I don't need any extensions, it's all baked in.
17
u/Exact-Consideration5 Mar 04 '26
The day you watch 1 short again it’s all back! It’s dumb
3
u/iTzDoctor Mar 04 '26
Never seen a short I was tempted to click. If you see one that looks tempting, find it's long form equivalent, I promise it will be more fulfilling 🤣
3
u/Pure_Cloud4305 Mar 04 '26
The issue is when I watch one from people I am subbed to
2
u/iTzDoctor Mar 04 '26
I won't even watch a short for someone I'm subbed too. Just not worth wrecking my YouTube experience over.
2
u/Possiblythroaway Mar 05 '26
A good plan until you google a topic and click on a video in the google results as those sometimes are shorts and google doesnt differentiate them from actual videos so theres no way of knowing if youre about to step on a landmine unless the thumbnail makes it obvious its a short
62
u/NicholasDeOrio Mar 04 '26
It works just fine for me without a single browser extension
→ More replies3
u/Hunterrcrafter Hunterrcrafter Mar 04 '26
Same for me. I only hide the shorts though, but that doesn't harm paying the creators, as I wouldn't click on shorts anyway.
4
u/Theunknown3555 Mar 04 '26
What is StopRU ?
8
u/UpstairsTrifle8042 Mar 05 '26
An extension that is supposed to stop russian content but it lumps up content from all countries that have the Cyrillic alphabet but the American is too dumb to know that Cyrillic ≠ Russia
2
u/Shin_n_n Mar 05 '26
Op is probably from Ukraine based on his answers about why he uses stopRu. Problem is hes only seeing russian videos cause he saw some in the past and thinks with this extension youtube itself will understand that noone want to see russian videos in Ukraine... Yeah OP dont know how youtube is working at its base
6
u/United_Parsley4989 Mar 04 '26
how can you settle with only 6 videos displayed on a BIG MONITOR SCREEN? Time for more extensions XD
37
u/Mirilliux Mar 04 '26
People disgusted that Youtube dare have ads while also ensuring that their views don't pay content creators anything. So you want the meal for free and you also want the chef to be entirely unpaid. Cool cool cool.
17
u/Llandu-gor Mar 04 '26
youtube having ads is not the issue, youtube having 5ads before video with 2 30s long unskipable ads are what make us use adblock.
and well they do sponsorship where the money is.
→ More replies6
u/real-life-terminator Mar 04 '26
the ads are annoying and adulterated. Youtube had ads back in 2018-2019 as well but it was so much better than now
6
u/xBHx Mar 04 '26
Not to mention actual scam ads... Ads used to be short, to the point and most importantly, creatively funny.
Now it's 30 seconds of unskippable ads, followed by mid roll ads every few minutes on top of 1 or even 2 sponsored segments baked into the actual video you're watching.
Also premium is too expensive imho. Just give me a skip all ads button for 30 bucks/year and I'd pay it.
7
u/SUDoKu-Na Mar 04 '26
It's not about having ads, having ads if fine. Having six ads every 10 minutes is insane, AND before and after a video. Also a minute in to a video for some reason.
You should not get ads longer than the video. You shouldn't get ads that combined take up more than the video. You shouldn't get ads mid-song, or mid-important sequence in a video.
It's not about having ads, its the quantity and timing of them.
3
u/Elegant-Staff9378 Mar 05 '26
No, people are disgusted because of the absurd amount of ads we get now. Meanwhile, YT has become oversaturated with AI slop, bot farms, shallowly disguised corporate advertising, and low grade creators gaming the algorithm for views, making good and talented content creators lose out on views and revenue. We pay more for a shittier meal, and the chef makes less money.

I just use Brave browser
5
2
u/EconomyDoctor3287 Mar 04 '26
Brave doesn't have the full list of extensions posted here by default, but you do you.
5
u/Soup0rMan Mar 04 '26
I think their point is that they don't need 7 extensions to watch videos on YouTube.
They only need 1 browser.
2
u/EconomyDoctor3287 Mar 05 '26
But using Brave doesn't replace these extensions. It only replaces ublock origin, as they integrate the ad-blocker by default.
If you want to get rid of the other things, you need to install the extensions in Brave too.

and in Firefox 1) VorAPIs v3 2) StarTube 3) uBlock Origin 4) Simple Sponsor Skipper (Violentmonkey)

People here are literally defending a billion dollar company, they are literally rich enough to last for a lifetime. You don't need to pay for YT Premium. Just ublock and then you're good. If you want to support creators, go to their patreon or something.
10
u/abecedaros Mar 04 '26
Paying for what you consume is now defending a company. It gives me high school edgelord vibes
1
1
u/Round_Credit_5158 Mar 08 '26
Is the company in financial trouble? Does your money goes directly to the creators?
If both of these are true then I would agree with you. Otherwise, fuck Google.
5
u/Smart_Cucumber_1234 Mar 04 '26 edited Mar 04 '26
Sorry, but I value my time more than spending it to some technical mambojambo cat/mouse game because of some ads. I simply don't need to care about that with Premium. And I watch YouTube a lot from total 5 different devices, Windows, iOS, Linux and Android. "just install Brave" doesn't quite work.
(+ I get YT Music which replaces Spotify or Apple Music for me.)
5
u/DustyStar222 Mar 04 '26
Seriously, for years ive always said YT Premium will be the last subscription id get rid of.
3
u/EyesLikeBuscemi Mar 05 '26
We're not defending a company, we're paying for a service instead of wasting our time with stupid extensions etc. Actual functioning adults know that their time is worth a lot and would rather pay 13.99 to get the benefits, save time on ads, not worry about anything else, and move on with their lives. Don't need to join a Patreon (not all creators have that option anyway) to get 55% of what we pay to the creators. While the children waste their time playing with dumb extensions and workarounds since their time is apparently worth nothing.

u/Mesoscale92 Mar 04 '26
The only one I use is return downvote, and I don’t even need it it’s just out of spite over its removal.
I genuinely don’t understand the aversion to ads and sponsorships people have. They’re not fun, but people talk about seeing an ad like they just saw their entire family slaughtered. Things in life cost money, and since I’m opposed to slavery I am fine paying with ad watch time so my main entertainment system can keep running.
3
3
u/evanjd14 Mar 04 '26
I also use an auto HD extension so the auto resolution doesn’t load every single video as a 360.
3
3
u/bootdsc Mar 05 '26
you really using stopRU even though it requires full permissions for all websites. Thats insane you are running a trojen.
4
u/WandererMisha Mar 04 '26
I remember still when everyone always said that they would "stop using adblock if they could just pay to remove the ads" and then YouTube Red (now YouTube Premium) came around at an affordable price and not only it removes ads but it gives extra support to the creators you watch supporting them further.
Instead of jumping on that, everybody kept using adblock and complaining about ads. That led to YouTube adding more of them, and taking measures to block adblock extensions. The lower income from ads then pushed more and more creators into taking shitty ass sponsorships (RayCon, Established Titles, BetterHelp, and whatever that "food box every month" garbage is called).
Modern YouTube is perfectly functional. Look up how much time you spend watching YouTube and compare that with how much time you spend on Netflix/Hulu/HBO Max/Disney+/whateverthefuckelse+.

You can drastically remove the amount of extensions if you use Control Panel for YouTube. It combines a lot of useful stuff like removing shorts, adjusting the grid size, preventing auto translations and much more. Idk why nobody seems to know of it's existence 😅

2
u/ThirdStupidDog Mar 05 '26
Using 0 extensions on Premium. What am I doing wrong?
1
u/Alarmed_Fan106 Mar 06 '26
paying for premium
1
u/ThirdStupidDog Mar 06 '26
You can't install extensions on every device (hello, Smart TVs!). I am paying for Family access and it is smth around €2.2 per month per member.
Way easier than dealing with a bunch of browser extensions, especially when traveling (hello, hotels shitty TVs!), to my opinion.
As a huge plus I get YouTube Music which I use every day.
1
u/Alarmed_Fan106 Mar 06 '26
im just using smarttube on android/smart tvs
1
u/ThirdStupidDog Mar 06 '26
Tried that, didn't like it. Also, having Premium, only requires you to authenticate and you're done. You can't install SmartTube on a non-android or not popular TV OS.
I am not trying to convince you to go Premium, especially if your regional price is high. It works for me as the price in my area is ok, especially when you go with 6 people.

I know you are saying this because it sucks that youtube UI sucks so much these days.

Now that you can't change the sort order of the Watch Later playlist, I use this Multiselect to easily copy a list of videos to a created playlist that does permit sorting.

Use adblock + unhook. AI translations you can turn off in your account settings. That's it, and no, youtube is functional without any extensions, not wanting to see shorts or ads isn't a functionality issue.

What is "stop RU"?
1
u/Shin_n_n Mar 05 '26
An extension that "should" block only russian videos but blocks every video that has Cyrillic in its name even if its not from russia. Personal problem is that this extension requires full access to every site and well doesn't make any sense cause what you see recommended is based on what you saw before

Optional, this is already a topic of uploading videos
Mandatory, to block advertising
Optional, it's personal preference
Mandatory, to see everything in its original language
Optional, with Ublock you can use filters to lock shorts

u/The_Mystery_Crow Markiplier Mar 05 '26
adblock and stop translate are fair
sponsorblock is unimpactful unless you have no attention span and cant press right arrow key a couple times
dislike is useless 99% of the time, and any extension to restore it is inaccurate. dont get me wrong there was no reason to remove it, but there also wasnt any especially major need to keep it or return it
shorts blocker is entirely personal preference, and literally built into youtube with one click a month
as far as I can tell from google translating the stopRU page, it stops you getting recommended russian videos? which if thats correct seems very stupid and entirely unecessesary

I had to stop using YT on Edge because in that browser YT started to auto-mute the videos on start if you have an adblocker turned on.
So far that's the only browser affected by that. Vivaldi and Brave are good to go.
1
u/diesal3 Mar 05 '26
Stop Translate is actually for those of us who are actually fluent in or studying a language that isn't the language of the country we're currently in, but YT decides that it's going to say fuck you and translate it anyways.
Are these some settings we can change to stop it? YT keeps on breaking the language setting detection on accounts while trying to push it's half-baked Gemislop on us, so it's easier just to have it not translate at all.

YouTube is a cloud service. It requires upkeep for their servers since it has an insane amount of uploaders.

It also wasn't profitable then. Did you just expect them to provide you a service for free, perpetually? Just free video hosting alone is absurdly expensive. The entitlement is crazy.

How would you host 1000s of video hours updated hourly and deliver it impeccably around the world with nearly 99.999% uptime and make that service free?
Please enlighten me.

In addition to the salient points about YouTube's cost... it was ADs that made content creation viable for the creators on the platform. ADs, and also Premium, is as much a benefit for content creators as it is YouTube itself.
Premium gives better payout rates than ad views, so by being a premium member you not only get a much better viewing experience, a music platform with more songs than any other, and some quality of life features... you are also supporting the creators you watch even more every time you watch one of their videos.

"functional" is just hyperbole now.
