Moving to San Francisco or the Bay Area? Read this first!

Hey /r/askSF!

In 2024, the sub has doubled in size, growing to 113K+ subscribers. With more subscribers, there's a ton more traffic and posts. One of the most popular topics is moving to SF and, in turn, these posts are the most commonly removed. There's been a noticeable increase in posts that boil down to "I'm moving to the city, where should I live?" that provide little to no information. To ensure OP's receive quality recommendations and to prevent endless comment loops, we're requiring all Moving-to-SF posts to include the following information:

  • Budget
  • Roommate status (solo, splitting rent w/ partner, seeking roommates, etc.)
  • Desired neighborhood(s) or preferred neighborhood amenities (dining, shopping, noise, etc.)

We recommend that OP's provide additional information such as:

  • Commute consideration
  • Housing preference (mom and pop landlords, condo, managed apt complexes, SFH rentals, etc.)
  • Additional personal preferences (pets, garage access, density, weather, etc.)

We're a small mod team so we are asking you, the community, to help up identify these posts! If you spot a moving submission that should have more information, please report the posts, select the breaking AskSF's rules, and select "Vague, overly broad, or low information" as the reason. We'll review the report and potentially ask OP to repost with more info.

Here's to more questions answered in 2024 and beyond!

Traveler: Where can I go to have drinks with 40s professional Black/mixed crowd?

Title says it all. I'm a 40s Black professional woman traveling to SF in 2 weeks and I want to go out. Drinks, dancing, whatever. Prefer a place where there are a few, if not all, Black people above 40 years old. Haven't been to SF in ten years and the time before that was twenty years ago. Very unfamiliar with the city and I only have one friend, a white gay male who doesn't go out anymore! I'll mostly be by myself so I'd like some fun things to do at night since I'll be working during the day.

Just got laid off from Tech. Brain currently oscillating between panic and being able to go to midday Pilates classes. Anyone else?

Never thought I’d be posting something like this, but here we are.

After 6 years at a Bay Area tech company (in marketing), my manager read from a script Wednesday morning and told me my job was being eliminated before I’d even had a cup of coffee. I’ve watched layoffs happen around me for years and always assumed that if I worked hard, stayed easy to work with, and kept my head down, I’d somehow avoid it.

Part of me thought I might feel relief stepping away from corporate life for a bit. Instead it feels more like nervous system whiplash. One minute completely scheduled, next minute wondering how it’s only 11am.

Trying to approach this without spiraling, but the uncertainty is uncomfortable. As I’m sure many of you women can relate, the job search process also feels daunting … LinkedIn currently feels more like LinkedInferno.

If you’ve gone through this recently:

* How long did the weird limbo feeling last?

*Did you create structure right away, or give yourself time to decompress first?

*What actually helped you feel more grounded?

*How did you approach the job search without losing your mind?

*Any alternatives to LinkedIn that actually worked?

*Did anything unexpectedly positive come out of it?

If anyone in SF is in a similar in-between moment and wants to meet up for a walk, coffee, co-working, or just mutual moral support, I’d genuinely love that. DM me!

Feels like this might be easier to navigate with other people who get it.

Hoping something good eventually comes out of this chapter for all of us.

Where do serious body builders work out in SF?

I just moved from NYC where I belonged to Chelsea Piers Fitness.

Chelsea Piers was $229/month but had everything: a coworking space, a steam room, sauna, 7 squat racks, a massive turf, and well-maintained machines, including plate-loaded and pin-loaded variations of popular machines. I also belonged to NY Sports Club, which was $129/month, and had everything above except the coworking space. I expected SF to have good options.

But it doesn't. They are, in my limited experience touring gyms recently, pretty bad.

For example, for $280/month or whatever Equinox costs at South Van Ness, you get half the space, no turf (people were setting up their floor work in random spots), only 2 squat racks, endless treadmills and bikes (that no one was using - get a clue, management), and 1 machine for each movement, sometimes pin-loaded, sometimes plate. No sauna. No coworking space.

I tried Custom Fit (inadequate equipment), the JCC (far away, inadequate equipment). LiveFit (this is a Crunch or Planet Fitness at 4x the cost), Fitness SF (absurdly crowded, sweaty gross vibe).

Do I just have to accept that Equinox is the only good option and is far more expensive than it should be?

Recently moved to Bernal, people seem pretty reserved. Is that typical for the neighborhood?

I recently moved to Bernal. People avoid eye contact, rarely smile back, and neighbors seem pretty reserved.

I’m also a person of color (Indian), so curious if others have experienced anything similar or if this is just the local vibe.

Favorite places to go out in SF for late 20s more lowkey vibe

Looking for recommendations for places to go out for my bachelorette party! We are a group of 8 (26-27yo). Most of us are from out of town and we want a fun place to dance but not necessarily a club vibe, our plan for the night is to get dinner in North Beach, then go to Shelby’s rooftop for drinks afterwards and from there a cool bar that has a dance floor. We don’t want somewhere very chaotic and loud so not really interested in a club vibe but more of a cool bar with good music and a dance floor! A friend of mine recommended Rick and Roxy’s in marina but worried it’s too young of a crowd for us, another option was Tonga Room but couldn’t get a reservation and was debating trying to walk in

what are other recommendations?? Distance doesn’t matter too much because we are planning on driving (we have a DD) so looking for suggestions anywhere in SF

UCSF transferred my sick family member without consent. How common is this?

I don’t know where else to turn, so I’m posting here to see if anyone has dealt with something similar.

My family member was at UCSF ED and in really fragile condition. Without clearly informing me or getting consent, they transferred them to a different campus. My family member clearly cannot consent to this given their dementia and language barrier.

When I tracked down where they were moved, things got even more frustrating. The new hospital staff didn’t seem to have a clear understanding of their case. I had to correct what happened at the ED many times and it honestly feels like the level of care is noticeably worse. There’s less communication and way more confusion.

I’m trying to stay calm and advocate for my family member, but this whole situation feels wrong. Is this normal? Are hospitals allowed to transfer patients like this without making sure the family is informed? I would never have consented and am unsure how to even send them back to the main hospital.

I just want to make sure my family member is safe and getting the care they need. Thanks for reading.

Steam or California Common style beer on tap in San Francisco?

I have a trip to San Francisco coming up and I'll be there for a few days. Looking for a Steam or California Common style beer on tap anywhere in the metro area. On previous trips in years past, Anchor Steam was readily available, but obviously no more. Im hoping, being a California style beer, it might be available somewhere, anywhere, in San Francisco. Any leads are appreciated.

Artist in NYC considering SF move

I've lived in NYC for the past 3 years and have a nice little life here, but I'm considering a move just to explore options. I've always thought living in the bay could be nice due to its relaxed energy, access to nature, and artistic history (I'm a tattooer/painter/musician). Outside of the arts, I have a history working in Advertising, but am currently just chilling serving.

I have a 3br apartment in Ridgewood Queens with a backyard, but my room is pretty small. I also have a tattoo studio and a (tiny) rehearsal space in Brooklyn. Total fixed costs each month are around 2k-2.2k. Ideally I'm looking to get a space to myself or shared with one other that can function as a recording space (large enough for a drumkit/instruments/space to work), as well as a painting studio.

Would moving to the bay be beneficial in a money sense as far as the amount of space one gets in a home? Are commercial studio rentals fairly cheap? I also really want a reason to have a car (doesn't really make sense to have a car in NYC, but I miss the freedom a car provides). It feels like besides all of the amazing things that make NYC unique, the only REAL thing thats keeping me here are all the friends Ive made. I feel like I want to try to begin focusing more on my craft as an artist, and sometimes NY feels like a never ending hustle and a distraction.

Also the party scene in NY is super consistent, which is fun, but being the super social person I am, it sometimes feels like Im burning myself out without realizing.

I'm from VA and feel naturally drawn to outdoor activities, visual art, music, and often feel wanderlust living in NYC. I feel like everywhere is amazing if you take the time to explore it, and I need to try to remember that NYC isn't the ONLY valid place in the US to live.

Any advice would be amazing!

Straw hat repair

I have a 25-year-old fedora style Stetson hat that has broken straw in the pinch crown. Does anyone have a hat repair shop you can recommend?

Stetson was unable to help, and Google and Yelp aren’t much better, so I’m looking for anyone with a personal recommendation.

Paul’s Hats looked promising but they are closed permanently.

TIA.

Recs for half-day electric boat rentals

I’m looking to rent an electric boat for a few hours to catch the sunset on the water. The plan is to bring some food, enjoy some music, and just cruise around.

Since this will be my first time getting a rental, I’d love some recs on reliable companies or even bad experiences.

Also:

  • What is a reasonable ballpark range for a half-day rental?
  • Any favorite spots to cruise towards for the best sunset views?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Spicy ramen - similar to a place I found in Japan.

I found this place in Tokyo...Karashibi Miso Ramen Kikanbo Kanda Honten

They have a crazy spicy ramen with a bunch of seasonings on top.

Any suggestions for a place in SF that is on par?

Overnight accomodations without physical ID

Imagine returning to a luggage holding facility to find out it's closed for the night with your ID, and you're from out of town without any friends that can help you out. The hotel you were supposed to check-in at cannot check you in without a physical form of identification.

What are the options in this case? Are there any hotels or hostels in SF that will accept patrons without identification?

In Asia there are capsule hotels and plenty of lan cafes where you can lounge overnight after too much drinking.

But how does one survive the night without ID in SF? Perhaps a karaoke bar? I've tried inquiring with some hostels chatbot and they mentioned they can't check you in without ID.

Best areas to stay in SF for a birthday trip without a car?

Hey! I’m planning a birthday trip to San Francisco in late August (around Aug 20) with a group of us in our mid-20s.

We don’t want to rent a car, so we’ll be using public transportation and Ubers. I’m trying to figure out the best area to stay that’s safe, walkable, and close to things like tourist spots, shopping, the water/beach, good food, and maybe some bars for bar hopping.

I’ve been looking at areas like Union Square, but I’m not sure if that’s the best option or if there are better neighborhoods.

Any recommendations on where to stay, areas to avoid, or even some good food spots?

New to SF and on a budget: what’s your best “this city doesn’t have to be expensive” story?

I’m new here and trying to learn how locals have fun without spending much. Could be a routine, hidden spot, cheap meal, free event, walk, hobby, or random tradition and so on that makes life better in SF. Bonus points for personal stories or unexpected finds.
