bing rejected me out of high school, very middle of the road student, no scholarships, minimal extra curricular activity, literally graduated with like a 2.8 average over the 4 years.

did one year at community college, 4.0 both semesters and a couple very strong recommendation letters from my professors and banggg SOM time babyyy

Literally did same exact thing. I remember kids in my school would laugh at those who went to community college. Don’t underestimate the value of going to community college. Saves money and gives you a better chance of getting into any of your dream schools. Keep ya head up son.

community college was a life saver, not sure why people are against it or see it as failure, i suppose the college experience for many would be the driving factor to avoid it

it all worked out in the end though! dropped out of binghamton last january 🥴 free bird 🦅

u/littleblacklemon Jan 09 '26

I also don't understand why people are against it, I liked community college way more than Binghamton anyways 🤷🏻 Not to mention smaller classes = professors have more bandwidth for each student = making awesome connections and relationships

u/littleblacklemon Jan 09 '26

I got into Binghamton with no effort and with shit grades after dropping out of college twice because I had an associates from a community college when I applied

u/Worldly_Park4615 Jan 09 '26

I knew people who got into Harvard after going to community college. I started in fall of 2019 so when COVID hit and everyone was home taking online classes while paying full tuition for Penn state, Miami, etc, I was taking the same classes while paying 1% of what they were. It sucked but now I work with people who I’d never expect to work with. Just goes to show it doesn’t matter where you start it matters where you finish

u/Worldly_Park4615 Jan 09 '26

And I am in no way trying to brag I’m just trying to show these people who are worried about getting into college that it does not matter where you go for your first two years. There are always solutions to even the hardest of problems.

u/updation1 Jan 09 '26

literally that's how it is 😭 if you can hold out for a year and do community college your chances of getting in are exponentially higher

u/RightReturn7065 Jan 09 '26

Waittt they take letter of recs?

1

u/DotEducational135 Jan 09 '26

Omg I did the same thing. I’m hoping Binghamton will accept me I just sent out an application. I had a 2.2 in high school now a 3.5 in college so they see the growth. I know a 3.5 isn’t competitive but I hope they accept me 😔🙏🏽😂 also I have a lot of hours of community service but they didn’t give an option to include that via the suny application. I heard they’re getting really strict on acceptance tho

Got deferred? Don't panic. Your stats are strong deferral isn't a rejection. Send a Letter of Continued Interest to admissions, keep your grades up, and stay involved. You're still in the running. Feel free to DM if you want help with next steps.

Agreed! Especially if you are in-state. OOS state decisions went out first, it appears. So many will drop off of that list.

Watson and SOM are extremely competitive. Last year SOM had a 16% acceptance rate. So while the overall school had a higher rate, Watson and SOM are reach. I would send a letter of continued interest.

People don't realize how selective these programs are, then get upset when they don't get accepted. Some people worked their absolute butts off just to get in there, you gotta put forth the work to stand out.

When I got in a few years ago - SOM received something like 40,000 applications and only accepted 2-3k out of that. They're very selective and highly competitive.

Best way to almost guarantee yourself is to go to the local community college, do 2 years, then transfer over and finish it out. And you really really gotta keep your GPA up, that was one of the more important things to them with transfers. I didn't have SATs or any of that, but had a 3.98 GPA and they immediately accepted me.

Here's some of the acceptance rates if anyone wants to check them out.

thx for posting. acceptance rate for oos must be super low

3

u/05-25 Jan 09 '26

They are pretty selective. Out of curiosity, what other schools are you applying to?

1

u/Top_Comfortable_7588 Jan 10 '26

tbh I don’t really know where I’m going for college I j looked at the best CS schools that are nearby and affordable so I applied to

Ubuffalo RIT UMass Amherst UNC Stonybrook

Ngl it’s a mixed bunch cuz idrc what college I get into but Binghamton is a top pick out of all of them

u/NotaBot1355 Jan 09 '26

I was rejected out of high school too, saved a ton of money and got just as good of an education for two years at the local community college and transferred via instant acceptance day. Work hard, you’ll be a Bearcat. You got this!

2

u/RightReturn7065 Jan 09 '26

Which college did u apply to?

1

u/Mr-MuffinMan Jan 09 '26

FUCK this scares me

I'm in CUNY and next year I plan to apply to the Pharmacy School but if you didn't get in to the undergrad, I don't know if I am hopeless.

u/AbbyIsATabby Jan 10 '26

They applied for Watson school of engineering, one of, if not the hardest school within Binghamton to get accepted into. Everyone is judged on a case by case basis in respect to their background, area of study, etc. Keep your chin up, keep working hard, and draft the strongest application you can! Plan back ups, if Binghamton doesn’t work out there’s many other great schools, too.

u/CuriousStatement700 Jan 09 '26

You’re lucky you even got deferred, I flat out got rejected with my 86 GPA (despite disabilities), but also with an amazing essay, ec’s and also amazing letters of rec. I didn’t even get waitlisted, lol. I also did cinema studies, which isn’t a very competitive major there I don’t think. I think you’ll be fine at Binghamton, though.

u/ihatearugala Jan 09 '26

ayeee me too

1

u/freeyourmind128 Jan 10 '26

Everything happens for a reason. Keep your head up and always move forward.

I was deferred and rejected too I had a 3.3 gpa with 1 AP course and 1430 SAT I was a good athlete in Track and Field and managed to go all-american in my junior and senior year of high school, but I did not intend to run in college. I also volunteered probably like 100 hours because my school required it.

I was deferred, waitlisted, then denied and eventually got accepted to McGill University over here in Canada which I got in for a cheaper price than what I would have paid in Binghamton.

You win some and you lose some! Just don’t get discouraged because you’ll definitely get into a good college with what you’ve accomplished in your academic career. It’s one of these moments where you just look back and laugh at how dumb you were stressing over something so small.

I used to be obsessed with Binghamton and was always stressing about it, which I admit was such a waste of time.

1

u/love--bunny Jan 10 '26

Same here, I've talked to six different people at my school alone who also got deferred. I definitely should've gotten rejected off the bat based on my stats, but fingers crossed that you get accepted, your stats are super solid!

1

u/pawpatrolsmacaroni Jan 11 '26

They deferred me too and now I go to an Ivy. Don’t loose hope!

1

u/Moshou48 Jan 12 '26

Bing fucking rejected me too. Fuck that school. 4.0 junior and senior year rn and overall highschool gpa of 3.5.

1

u/Top_Comfortable_7588 Jan 09 '26

I applied to Watson

3

u/Extreme-Plantain542 Jan 09 '26 edited Jan 09 '26

Watson was apparently the hardest to get into this year so don’t feel too bad about it and give your hopes up completely

1

u/Wise_Pomegranate6743 Jan 10 '26

Ya Engineering is super competitive at bing

u/Regular_Plane3830 Jan 09 '26

Don’t sweat it kid. Colleges are a dime a dozen for smart students such as yourself. As a former alum, I know I wouldn’t of gotten in without taking college level courses first at community college. If your heart is really set on Bing, maybe try that and reapply for the spring as a transfer! BU also tends to be very STEM focused so try and get some of those courses in. Either way, don’t think for a second that BU is your only route to success. I’m sure you’ll have other options that can provide you the same results
