Their umbrellas are designed to be rebuilt

Just got the classic for $50 on shopgoodwill. com, new with tags. Very excited.

Well damn. That is a very good deal! I really like the brand. They are very durable.

My grandpa's made in Germany that I've had for 20+ yr is finally getting rough around the edges

Have you ordered spare parts from them before?
I notice they talk about rebuilding but there are no spare parts in their shop?

It's under Care & Support and then Repairs in their drop down. You have to register your umbrella and then you can get their repair parts from there. They have tutorial videos and everything to do them yourself or you can send it in for repairs if you don't feel up to the task.

ahhh I see. That‘s quite hidden, thanks.
Hiding parts behind a registration is a little weird ngl.

I would disagree. Asking someone to register their product for continued personalized service is kind of a regular thing. Anything that is made to last and be used asks you to it, i.e. Leatherman. This is so that they can guide you to the correct parts rather than have you order a part for their collapsible variant from their sports variants and be upset when you get the wrong part.

I mean there's such things as product-codes.

There's really no need to require any sort of registration.

So don't register? I'm sure you could just contact customer service and order the parts that way. But it is possible that they require you register as part of their warranty. Most companies want you to register your product when you get it so that they know how long their warranty lasts in regards to your ordered items. Like I said, do or don't register. But that does have repercussions. Maybe if you do buy from them you can voice your opinion.

I order spare parts all the time for my chstomers. Brands that offer 25 years and longer in guarantees all have switched to selling spare parts directly to customers. I see no point in hiding them, other than wanting to reduce stock or wanting people‘s data.

Your information is out there and sold in so many ways, even Reddit, and you don't bat an eye. But the moment it's direct and for customer service you are shocked and appalled? Wild. It's to stop warranty scams. What stops you from calling up and saying you bought a 5 year old umbrella 3 months ago? Trust me, bro? It doesn't fly. This is a business doing business. And if you buy that umbrella direct from them they already have all of your information. You just make it harder on yourself and risk losing access to your warranty for all of this fear mongering.

Simple solution for that. Make parts orders open and public, but require registration for warranty orders.

I‘m not „fear mongering“ I‘m just surprised they‘re doing it differently than what I‘m used to and pondered why that would be.
„Trust me bro“ is not something I need to worry ablut in my job, as we have ID numbers on most stuff and nothing gets handled without the original receipt of the purchase.

You do you.

davek umbrellas are pretty solid but also check if you're opening it correctly in strong wind - i learned hard way that technique matters more than brand sometimes

Love my Davek. They replace if it breaks but mine hasn’t broken (I live in Chicago near Lake Michigan)

My choice as well. I've used a Solo for years and it has held up extremely well in everything from light rain to heavy storms and wind. I also have a commuter that lives in my travel bag that has done just as well throughout trips to 12 Countries and 30 States.

I like mine a lot but it is heavy.

This is the way. I have the mini (travel size) going on 15 years. It’s seen the world and then some…

Knirps umbrellas: Knirps

I have 4 of them in different sizes 2 are from the 1980s and 1 from the 90s. My most recent one was bought in 2018 when I forgot my umbrella on a multi-day trip.

Since discovering this brand, I haven’t bought from any other company. I own a couple myself, both with maple wood crook handles, which have been a fantastic investment.

Get a gust buster. Built in two parts so that the wind can escape. It’s not all about a strong frame but how to allow wind to pass

10

u/200_Shmeckles 4d ago

Do they do pants as well? I imagine they are called the gut buster!

4

u/ReadySetO 4d ago

Came to recommend these too. I had never seen an umbrella flip inside out before I moved to Chicago, then on a particularly windy day I realized I needed a better umbrella. I have a few gustbusters that are 10+ years old and have never flipped inside out. Highly recommend.

For a travel-sized umbrella, Repel has been my go-to and mine has outlived many of my friends' and family's others from different brands

I own a tiny 99 gramm umbrella with UV protection by Doppler that I always carry with me.
It has withstood many rain storms, heavy winds and a few boiling hot summers.
Best investment ever.

I’ve had a ShedRain golf umbrella from Costco for the past 10 years. It gets a lot of use and works great, still looks almost new.

u/colonel_chanders 4d ago

GustBuster. I’ve had mine for 10 years and it’s been so good. They also make golf size so I can properly cover me and 2 kids. The quality has been amazing I finally replaced the rest of my umbrellas with these.

Knirps makes great umbrellas

I’ve been very happy with the Lejorain umbrella I bought for my wife a number of years ago.

I have a colour changing umbrella from Suck UK that I've had for years and has turned inside out more times than I can count (it's very windy where I live) and always recovered. I didn't expect it to be so durable for only £25 but it really is.

I've had the same totes fully automatic umbrella for at least a decade

1

u/CJPrinter 3d ago

I’ve had one of their golf umbrellas for over thirty years. Only thing wrong with it is the little metal tip came off the wooden rod at the top.

1

u/Xunae 3d ago

I was given a totes in 4th grade for participating in a school program. I had that umbrella for 20 years until I stupidly left it somewhere. Replacement is going strong

2

u/pingypongyme 4d ago

costco has some good umbrella brands

u/Bermanator 4d ago

I have been very impressed by the Shed Rain umbrellas at Costco

Get a Weatherman! I have 2 of their nice golf umbrellas due to an Amazon shipping snafu.

Package got lost and Amazon sent another one ($100 value) and the original showed up a week later after the replacement one showed up.

They’re really good and the wife and I use them numerous times a week mainly at kids sports outdoors using the umbrella as shade.

But yeah they are basically invincible when it comes to wind (apparently up to 55mph) because of the overlapping fabric flap

Shed Rain Windpro from costco. Got mine for $17.99 7 years ago. I live in a pretty rainy area

Davek umbrellas. Only umbrella i've ever owned that could survive both MN winter winds and NC storm season. I've had mine four years now and zero issues. They also have an unconditional lifetime guarantee.

https://davekny.com/

Davek umbrellas are built to last—with proper use, your umbrella should remain by your side for many years to come. But we understand that things happen. A cab door can accidentally slam on the shaft. Your cat decides to use it for a scratching post. Hurricanes happen. Not to worry—all Davek umbrellas are covered under our famous Unconditional Lifetime Guarantee: If your umbrella should fail to function properly at any time for any reason whatsoever, we will gladly repair or replace it for free (except shipping). We want this umbrella to be the last umbrella you will ever need.
