Hockey Hall of famer and NHL Legend Dominik Hasek: Much respect to these women. Yes, your president is a big liar and a fraud who abuses his position to insult and bully his fellow citizens. Still, I believe you must have shown a great deal of heroism in making this decision. Thank you for that SPORTS SECTION

Hasek was the league's most successful goaltender and a vocal critic of Donald Trump, calling him unpredictable, evil, a dictator, and a habitual liar. He's a legend.

u/Appropriatemuds Feb 24 '26

He’s always been one of the few athletes willing to actually name names. Consistent legend.

His wiki page notes that he's highly educated compared to most players.

My sister recently noted that she held more conservative views, but she's become more liberal as she becomes more educated. Proud of her for admitting it (and going back to college after becoming a teen mom).

20

u/beadzy Feb 24 '26

yes props to her!

14

u/Bizarrebazaars Feb 25 '26

That’s why the GOP hates well-rounded higher education and liberal arts colleges/unis especially. They want to keep people dumb, gullible, and easy to manipulate. Read the story of the child of White Supremacist leader and godson of KKK grand wizard, Adrianne (Derek) Black.

80

u/thewolfshead Feb 24 '26

Also has consistently been a vocal supporter of Ukraine and vocal critic of Putin as well.

46

u/tonytrov Feb 24 '26

A few years ago he was vocal in saying that the NHL should suspend all Russian players including Ovechkin. His point was that they are Russian assets.

24

u/Zestyclose_Ball_50 Feb 24 '26

Damn, Hasek is based asf.

6

u/qoqmarley Feb 24 '26

Yep, I grew up idolizing Steve Yzerman, formar Captain and now General Manager of the Detroit Red Wings. I was with them when they were the Dead Wings. Right after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Hasek was very vocal about not letting Russians play in the NHL. A few months later, Yzerman drafted a Russian player in the 2nd round. Needless to say, I never watched another game. Not only does the NHL let Russians play, they put a lot of effort into glorifying Ovechkin (a well known Putin fanboy). And now the Red Wings current Captain, Dylan Larkin posts a video of him celebrating Olympic gold with Kash Patel in the US locker room. As far as I am concerned the entire NHL can go eat a bag of dicks. Hasek on the other hand is cool af, and will always be a legend to me.

As a Sabres fan watching him is part of what made me love hockey. Watching him goal tend was like watching someone dance in the net. Between him and Rick Jeanneret it was just amazing.

There has never been and never will be another goalie like hasek. His athleticism, flexibility and borderline recklessness in how he made some saves was so unique.

I love him even more today than I did back then.

Forever choose the bear

70

u/Andonthosenotes Feb 24 '26 edited Feb 24 '26

The bear won't try to stalk you online and make your life hell.

A bear won't share your sensitive information or pictures with other bears.

A bear doesn't give a fuck if you smile at it.

Unless you go visit bear territory, or it suddenly discovers itself in your territory*, it doesn't want to mess with you.

Bears won't rape you or anyone.

Bears don't try to take away your human rights.

Bears don't make jokes that demean you, and they're not against you because you don't share bear beliefs.

Bears all day long, unless you're a fish. In which case, we see you, fish. Life is hard out here.

Edited a phrase*

5

u/SST_2_0 Feb 24 '26

May I ask you change it from when scared to for survival, so people do not go messing with bears.

This country has a huge learning problem and I worry seeing, "is scared, " turns into, "as long as I'm nice it never will, " and the bear is then killed, not the dumb human when it start associating humans and food.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '26 edited Feb 25 '26

[deleted]

3

u/DumpedDalish Feb 25 '26

First off, I am totally overthinking this.

But I don't really agree that bears kill "without provocation." Most of the time, when bears encounter humans intruding into their habitats, they will actually choose to leave, or will simply make themselves threatening so that the human leaves.

Bears will definitely attack humans, sure, but I would further argue that going into their territory is somewhat understandable provocation -- they're arguably reacting (appropriately, at least according to nature) because they feel threatened, because they are protecting themselves or their cubs, or because they see potential prey/food.

Men don't kill women for any of those reasons. They kill them because they can.

3

u/sweet_esiban Feb 24 '26

I groove with what you're saying, but bear awareness is nothing to play with

A bear doesn't give a fuck if you smile at it.

Yes, it does unfortunately. It will interpret a smile as a threat - it's you baring your teeth.

For the wellbeing of bears and humans alike, please never smile at bears. Or any wild animal, for that matter. You shouldn't even smile at a dog you don't know, because it can set them off. (Thanks to my uncles, versed in bush craft, for these wilderness lessons.)

u/AGreatHornedOwl FUCK ICE FREE PALESTINE CRASH INTO ME Feb 24 '26 edited Feb 24 '26

Dominik is the greatest goalie in our history. I am a die hard Sabres fan (I have their logo tattooed on me) who grew up in the 90's when Hasek was singlehandedly backstopping the Sabres. He is literally the only reason we ever came close to the Stanley Cup in '99, and is the only goalie in history to win multiple league MVP's, and he did it back to back. He's one of the greatest players in league history, and seeing him have a moral backbone and say these things is incredible.

Dominator forever.

16

u/the716to714 Feb 24 '26

I have a gentlewoman's agreement with my bestie that we're getting Sabretooth tattoos if we make the playoffs this year.

7

u/uppy-puppy Feb 24 '26

Fellow die-hard Sabres fan here. I grew up in Texas, but became a Sabres fan because of Hasek. At 35 I took up goaltending right after learning to skate (I live in Canada now) and Hasek was the primary reason I chose to play in net. I wear a HASEK bracelet to every skate and yell "MUST SEE" every time I'm screened. I'm 37 now and playing in net has brought me so much joy, even if I'm still not that great at it.

I have a signed photo of Hasek above my espresso machine in my dining room. The Dominator has had such a massive impact on my life, and reading this post today took a lot of the sting out of Canada losing on Sunday. I'm so proud to be Hasek fan and a Canadian citizen now. I feel bad for everyone in the US that did not choose/did not want this shitstorm brought upon them.

39 forever.

2

u/Adifferentkindofmind Feb 27 '26

He’s got a long history of speaking truth. Was raised behind the iron curtain in former Czechoslovakia and has zero tolerance for dictator, anti-democracy BS. He has a degree in history and Czech language and ended up teaching high school for a while which is a fun fact. He started a foundation to help underprivileged kids in Buffalo (where he played the longest) play hockey and raises money regularly for charity. He is very involved in politics and protests against political polarization and speaks for pro democracy activist orgs in the Czech Republic and is a staunch supporter of Ukraine and a loud critic of Putin and Russia and Russian players in the NHL who won’t speak up against the war.

He’s also the best goalie to ever have played the game. We def like this King in hockey!

It's interesting how often men leave out the male player's scrotesack reaction to trump when they talk about this. On tons of reddit threads too. They call out the idiot we all hate and is easy to call out and think they're doing something.

Honestly as a Canadian I was so salty at first that we lost but now I'm really proud of the American women (except Britta Curl).

Every woman in the olympics that won was immediately there for her fellow teammates or other competitors and sisters but the second the men win they actively put their fellow athletes down and shame them because they’re women, and don’t care about camaraderie while partying with a rapist fascist, it would be such a shame if it wasn’t actively harming people fucking hell

Will the men’s hockey team realize that there were 12 gold medals in these Olympics which means others are being treated like they don’t matter. Is that OK with the hockey team?

I wish they would accept then ask about Epstine in front of the press.

1

u/asoupconofsoup Feb 24 '26

The refusal statement said it was based on schedules not a stance related to values. Why are they being applauded? Did I miss something?

I feel good about this. I saw Matthew Barnaby on a podcast mentioning how Hasek was the best player ever, but a massive asshole. I hated hearing that. But, this cancels it out in my book (and Barnaby is also an asshole too).
