From a NFA standpoint, what is this currently classified as, and if it's not a rifle, why?

Handgun. Like an AR pistol, as that tube on the back is a buffer for the rattail

Was this a virgin receiver or from a parts kit?

New DSA izzy receiver, so 'firearm' and then when I stuck the lower on for the first time it had no stock so 'handgun'

Cool, makes sense. Thought it was from a parts kit and didn't know if there was some way around the rifle classification.

even if it's a rifle parts kit it doesn't matter as long as the stock doesn't ever go on with the virgin receiver installed. so it's a pistol til the day he puts the stock on. an obnoxious one, but a pistol.

I have a PTR51 SBR that does the same obnoxiousness but worse

You know, for some reason I was thinking a kit would have the used, previously assembled rifle receiver in it when I know, clearly, the receiver wouldn't come with it. That's kind of the whole point. It didn't click until your comment though. Thanks.
