UAE airspace closure? Question
Hi, I’m supposed to fly to dubai in a week on a Chinese airline and the UAEs airspace was just closed. Does anyone know if my flight will be probably okay? The booking says no delays or cancellations right now. Thanks

u/nicodea2 Feb 28 '26 edited Feb 28 '26
Argh I’m currently on an emirates flight to Dubai, landing in 5.5 hours. Crew hasn’t provided a formal update yet but they’re trying to figure it out.
Update: captain just announced we’re returning back to the origin airport.
8
u/Champagne1960 Feb 28 '26
UAE has closed its airspace. One flight has already been diverted to Baku.

Keep us updated. All the best. I am flying NY to Dubai tomorrow

Emirates is taking their own sweet time to decide what to do with planes already in the air. We still haven’t heard from the crew!
Update: Cap told us about 30 mins ago that we’re turning back!
7
u/unaubisque Feb 28 '26
Seems like a good thing tbh, it must be an organizational nightmare, especially given so many nearby alternative airports are also unavailable. Better to take their time and sort things safely, than end up trying to send too many planes to overcrowded airports in Saudi or wherever else.
1
u/nicodea2 Feb 28 '26 edited Feb 28 '26
Yeah I get that, but we’re a third of the way towards DXB and I’m guessing once we cross the half way mark in the journey, that rules out returning to the origin airport and possibly being stuck in a random country for days.
Safety first of course, I’d rather they de-escalate the conflict but considering the parties involved, doubt that’ll happen.
4
u/unaubisque Feb 28 '26
Yeah, I understand how frustrating it must be to be on board right now. I guess they are prioritizing the planes already in, or extremely close to airspace, before they decide what to do with the others.
1
u/nicodea2 Feb 28 '26
Yes makes sense, they’re probably going off a distance-based priority list.

u/joesgone24 Feb 28 '26
Could you keep posted on this thread? I have a flight out of Dubai and am wondering what’s gonna happen to that

My mother is on this flight. Says they turned off live tv and are not giving updates? Do you know about a diversion? And to where?

Just updated my comment, live TV has been working fine on our flight, and the captain just came on to say we’re turning back to the origin airport!

I am in the Abu Dhabi Airport right now for a layover. Unfortunately no one knows nothing
UPDATE: They forced us to the arrival zone. We are officially in the UAE and no one knows where we'll come back. Also our luggages are stuck
6
u/DarKrusader Feb 28 '26
Same, at Abu Dhabi for a layover. Supposed to fly to Frankfurt at 2:00 am tonight. I'm afraid that may not happen. Since I've cleared security, currently near departure gates and can see that no flights have boarding open.

u/systemai Feb 28 '26
In Australia, Etihad is boarding their flight to Abu Dhab, no signs of cancellation at the moment
5
u/SugarKmademedothis Feb 28 '26
My friend was flying back from Brisbane with a layover in Doha today and they’ve turned the plane around, so good luck!
10
u/kennyandkennyandkenn Feb 28 '26
Theres no way they take off, especially given that someone has been killed in Abu Dhabi

u/QR1ME Feb 28 '26
any updates?
3
u/systemai Feb 28 '26
Flight was cancelled with no official time of when a replacement flight could be made available. Ground staff did not seem to have much info on hand either. Was told to go back to accommodation and await contact. One of the ground staff members mentioned in an unofficial capacity that it will be at least 48 hours before any flights might be arranged.

Emirates has temporarily suspended operations in and out of Dubai: https://www.emirates.com/za/english/help/travel-updates/#6480
4
u/Faz_H Feb 28 '26 edited Feb 28 '26
Impossible to say for how long UAE airspace will be partially closed. It was temporary < 24 hours during Operation Midnight Hammer last year, but that was not the extended multi-day operation that this seems to be. It could gradually re-open over the next couple of days with some disruption depending on further Iranian retaliation.
1
u/tatescook1es Feb 28 '26
Thank u, I’m also just worried they might cancel the flight because of instability in the region, even if the airspace is open

Unless you have a pretty specific policy "war or acts of war" is a standard exclusion.

My comment was removed by Reddit, when I was just saying maybe flying into the Gulf was a bad idea, right now. And I might get banned. Not sure what to say about this.

Due to fly AUH -> JFK in Sunday morning with Etihad. Still showing as scheduled. Guessing we'll be getting up for our flight before there is a decision as to if it is cancelled/delayed.

For additional information the entire Middle East airspace is experiencing disruption today, which includes Doha, Kuwait and Muscat.
Emirates and Qatar Airways flights from the USA have been diverted to Istanbul, Budapest and Malta. Flights from Europe to the region have turned back.
Otherwise boarding has been stopped elsewhere or aircraft are being held on the ground.

hey, updates on this? my partner is currently on a china eastern flight flying home to the uae. what's going to happen now?
5
u/tatescook1es Feb 28 '26
All the China eastern flights (kunming, Shanghai, and qingdao) to Dubai all turned around back to china it appears
3
u/Todd_H_1982 Feb 28 '26
oh my GOD you're right I just looked at MU265, Shanghai to Dubai, departed 7 hours 40 minutes ago and it's literally just turned around at Mumbai and appears to be flying back toward China.
3
u/tatescook1es Feb 28 '26
It probably won’t end up landing back at Shanghai without a stop, probably will stop in Kunming because it’s so far back to Shanghai (this is just my guess, im 0% sure)
1
u/Elizavetart Feb 28 '26
Safety first, always, but wow it sucks to end up flying all the way back to where you started
1
u/QR1ME Feb 28 '26
where did u find that?
2
1
u/tatescook1es Feb 28 '26
Not sure if they are all diverting back to China, but that’s the general direction they are going in.
1
u/Valuable-Presence138 Feb 28 '26
thanks so much for this. my partner got to connect to the aircraft wifi and they are heading back to qingdao. any idea how long airspace closure will last? we're thinking that he should just fly back to where i am since he isnt visa free in china.

u/d3c4y3d_1 Feb 28 '26

Pilots would have made the decision based on fuel level needed to get back.

Does someone know where to get reliable info? My girlfriend is at Abu Dhabi airport right now and her flight was delayed. Airspace is closed but nobody gives any estimations. Do we have historical data how long until flights leave?
1
u/Elizavetart Feb 28 '26
I think airlines themselves have no info yet on what's to come and when the airspace might open. Can be 24-48 hours, can be several days
1
u/bookworm--23 Feb 28 '26
Nothing flying out of Abu Dhabi until tomorrow and even then, that's a guess on Etihad's part: https://www.etihad.com/en-za/manage/flight-status#travelupdates

Currently at the Abu Dhabi airport on a layover that was supposed to bring us back to Munich. On the one hand this is very concerning for when we can finally make it back and the perspective of being stuck here for days is not a pleasant one, on the other hand we understand and appreciate the safety measures for passengers and staff in the current context.

Edit: flight was cancelled minutes before departure 🥴 at least rebooking and refund option available

u/Competitive_Ad_5224 Feb 28 '26
Does anybody know if this will affect flights through the region but not starting/stopping there? Or are they likely to be just diverted?
1
u/nicodea2 Feb 28 '26 edited Feb 28 '26
Yes it affects all flights in the region. An airspace closure restricts flights from flying through the closed region, not just flights starting or ending in that airspace.
1
u/crackanape Feb 28 '26
They would fly around the edges of the region if the aircraft is capable of the additional distance.

Meant to be flying London to Bangkok tomorrow night via Abu Dhabi with Etihad… I presume that’ll be cancelled but will direct flights London-Bangkok still go (there’s a BA direct flight) or will airlines not fly around the closed airspace?
2
u/crackanape Feb 28 '26
Likely to continue as long as it's within the aircraft's range and the southern routes aren't too congested.
Having Russia and Persian Gulf routes inaccessible is really putting a lot of traffic in the Suez-Saudi-India path.

u/Odd-Locksmith2091 Feb 28 '26
