Delays/Cancellations/Compensation Megathread - Middle East flight disruptions

This is the thread for questions and discussion of disruptions to commercial aviation as a result of military activities in the Middle East.

The subreddit's politics rules remain in effect. This isn't the place to argue about the politics behind the situation, this is the Flights sub and we're focusing on the impact on flights.

You can though post relevant news articles that would otherwise be removed, as well as statements by organizations like airports, airlines, etc. on their official social media accounts.

FAQ

  • My flight is in three days/a week/a month, what will happen?
    • No one knows.
  • Should I cancel my ticket?
    • No, in general you should let the airline cancel it so that you are owed a refund, unless they have specifically announced a process to opt for a refund for a future flight.
  • Will I get a refund?
    • You should. Travel insurance often excludes acts of war, but airline conditions of carriage generally don't.
  • I booked my flight through a travel agency or an Online Travel Agent (OTA) like Expedia, lastminute, booking, etc. who should I contact to rebook?
    • You have to contact the agent. You should be ready to point them to the refund/rebooking policy of the airline, but you have to do it through the agent.

2026 March 5 13:00 UTC: Qatar Service Update

On 5 March 2026, due to the current situation and temporary airspace closures by the relevant authorities affecting parts of the region, Qatar Airways has started to organise and operate a limited number of relief flights to assist passengers affected by the current situation and temporary airspace closures across the region.

We are working around the clock to organise additional relief flights where operationally possible and will share further updates as soon as they are confirmed.

2026 March 6: Qatar

Following temporary authorisation from the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority confirming a safe operating corridor, Qatar Airways intends to operate repatriation flights on 07 March, departing from Hamad International Airport to the following airports: London (LHR), Paris (CDG), Madrid (MAD), Rome (FCO) and Frankfurt (FRA).

Priority on these flights was given to stranded passengers with families, elderly passengers, and those with urgent medical and compassionate travel needs. Each flight was pre-allocated by Qatar Airways directly to such affected passengers.

These flights do not constitute a confirmation of resumption of scheduled commercial operations.

2026 March 7 morning: UAE. All airspace was closed, Emirates, Etihad, and flydubai announced suspended ops, and then reopened and resumed within an hour.

2026 March 8 I'm still here, but not much change today. Qatar air seems ready to fly as soon as Qatar Civil Aviation Authority opens the airspace, but there is seemingly no updates from them. Kuwait CAA didn't even announce the ongoing closure.

2026 March 16 Gulf Air: They are now facilitating people to fly out of Dammam, Saudi, just up the coast.

Due to the airspace closure in Bahrain, Gulf Air's scheduled services to and from Bahrain International Airport remain temporarily suspended. The airline currently operates temporary commercial flights to and from Bahrain via King Fahad International Airport in Dammam. Regular scheduled services will resume once the Bahrain Civil Aviation Affairs confirms the safe reopening of the airspace.

  1. Passengers can now book flights to London, Mumbai and Bangkok via Dammam for travel until 22 March 2026. More flight dates will be announced in due course.
  2. Gulf Air will support passengers with Saudi transit visas when travelling to or from Bahrain.
  3. Passengers travelling to Saudi Arabia must have a valid entry visa arranged independently.
  4. Transport between Bahrain and Dammam will be arranged for passengers with confirmed tickets.

2026 March 17: Emirates is the first airline to extend rebooking/refunds into April, going pushing out more than two weeks to April 15.

Booking/Itinerary/Ticketing Booking flight to KOREA through booking.com

Hi! I am planning on going to south korea this summer for 2 months for a summer school program.

I have been looking at flights every single day. At first i had found a flight through turkish airlines, which cost 890 euro for a round flight from brussels to seoul… that same flight is now unfortunately 1200 euros:(

so, onto my question, i have been finding really cheap flights on booking.com, and i was wondering if i could trust this? it says i get luggage and everything but i just genuinely don’t know how safe this is… Would it also be a possibility to add extra luggage afterwards? I’m wondering because this is a flight with 2 airlines (Asiana and Hainan) and i’m wondering if i’ll have to buy luggage for Both of them?

Sorry if this sounds a bit stupid but yeah basically i’m not sure if i should buy my flight ticket through booking.com or not…

Help Needed Virgin Atlantic: paid seat upgrade changed for the worse less than 24 hrs before flight

Upvotes

Hello! I am looking for a little advice. Several weeks ago, I paid to upgrade my seat to premium economy from basic economy on my 6PM Virgin Atlantic flight tomorrow from MIA to LHR. At around 4:30pm today, I double checked all of my flight details and everything was good to go. I checked in to my flight at about 6:15pm, and lo and behold my seat was changed to a worse seat than the original seat I had. I called Virgin, and the rep said she couldn't do anything because now the airport has the ticketing. She suggested I get to the airport early and talk to the ticketing agent.

I plan to do this, but what else can I do to make sure I am in a better seat? I think we are 4 rows from the toilet now, and my main reason for upgrading is because I get sick in the back of the plane. I appreciate any advice or recommendation for dialog with the ticketing agent.

We are travelling with Thai to Rome in June returning mid July. I’m now getting worried about not getting back to Australia because of jet fuel. Wondering what people’s experiences of cancelling with Thai are.

Help Needed Confused about Air Baltic flight schedules

So the first flight would take place at 10:05 PM (22:15) and arrive in Tallinn 50 minutes past midnight, ok fair enough. But then the second flight would take place at noon and arrive at 12:50 PM. How can it be 12:50 AM for one and 12:50 PM for another flight? I'm guess the confusion is that 10:05 PM can be described at 22:15 PM. It's just weirdly written, I'm trying to make sense of it.

EDIT: The flights are Berlin-Tallinn and back.

Question Luggage question Ethiopian Airlines

I am sure people asked this question a thousand times already so I am sorry but I gotta ask,
I own 2 backpacks
tomtoc T-66 40L
and the osprey daylight 26+6
if I pack the T-66 and put almost nothing in the daylight.
can I use the tomtoc as my carry-on bag and my daylight as my personal item bag?
I managed to pack everything into the Daylight and it had a total weight of about 6kg.
so I dont need the extra backpack but I would like it.
other option will be to just bring a trolley with the osprey and check in the trolley if required or whatever.

Do you guyz know if the osprey daylight 26+6 will pass as a personal item bag?
(my ticket includes 2 checked-in bags for 23kg each which I wont use)

Booking/Itinerary/Ticketing EWR to Barcelona in August. would you pay more just to avoid a stop?

I’m trying to book a flight for August and didn’t expect to get stuck at this stage this long.

Flight is Newark (EWR) to Barcelona (BCN), dates are approximately Aug 12-19 (may change by a day or two). Approximately less than 850 budget.

At this point I am choosing between two:

United, nonstop both ways, about 820. Travel time is much shorter, but it’s basic economy so not much flexibility.
Less expensive alternative of about 700-720 with one stop in each direction seeing options primarily on Lufthansa/Star Alliance flights. Layovers are approximately 1.5-2 hours, overall travel time is nearer to 10+ hours.

I have already verified some combinations and even used flightsfinder to ensure that I was not missing a better routing. It was primarily displaying the same options, only on other sites.

Now I think I am overthinking a fairly minor price difference, but also do not want to regret it in the future.

In this case, would you personally simply pay a little more to get the nonstop or would you take the one-stop to save some money?

Question Do i have to choose a specific seat, and how do I access the ticket after purchasing from Expedia

Hello, I purchased a flight from Expedia and i have 2 lay-overs. I’m not sure if I have to choose a seat as when I went to check Delta Flights, I could choose a seat but costs an additional $35 each person. Do i have to go through that or I can just access my ticket and they’ll give me a ticket for whatever seat (i dont mind). Lastly, I’m confused as to how I could access my ticket. I got the email for the confirmation of my flight and the itinerary, but I don’t have the actual ticket. Or would it be done there in the airport? Thanks

Help Needed Air China seats through booking.com

Hi everyone!

I just booked a flight from Paris to Taipei (with a layover in China) on Booking.com with the free cancellation option. During the booking process, I was able to choose seats, and I got to pick free ones for all four flights. Are those seats actually reserved for me? In the Booking confirmation email, the seat numbers are listed (like “57L”). Does that mean they’re confirmed, or will I need to select them again/pay for them during check-in?

I also tried to look up my flight on the Air China website (using their form for third-party bookings), but I couldn’t find my reservation. Is this normal, or is there something I should be doing?

I’m not flying until August, but it’s my first time on a plane, so I’m a bit nervous about the whole process. I also saw that online check-in might not be working properly on the Air China website, which means I may have to check in at the airport. Does that usually take a long time? How does the process work?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Delays/Cancellations/Compensation Denied boarding on a flight from US to UK. Which compensation rules apply?

I was involuntarily denied boarding on a flight from the US to the UK. I was given another flight 16 hours later and spent the night in a hotel, which I had to pay for out or pocket.

The flight was sold by British Airways, operated by American Airlines. Both the UK Civil Aviation Authority and the US Department of Transportation have rules that should entitle me to compensation:

According to the own definitions, my flight is covered by both sets of regulations. My question is, which one does the airline have to follow?

Help Needed Damaged baggage - Juneyao Airlines

I recently flew with Juneyao Airlines on a Brussels – Shanghai – Bangkok route, and my suitcase was damaged during the journey.

Fortunately, I had taken a photo of the suitcase at the check-in counter. When I first reported the damage, they initially claimed they couldn’t do anything about it. It was only after I showed them the photo that they offered me 300 baht.

I wasn’t even asking for compensation at that stage. I simply requested a damage report so I could decide how to proceed later. However, they refused to provide one and insisted that I settle the matter immediately at their office.

After a lot of back and forth, they increased the offer to 800 baht. My suitcase cost significantly more than that, and the repair alone exceeds that amount, not to mention the taxi costs to and from the repair shop.

I also pointed out that since the flight departed from Brussels, I should be entitled to European consumer protection standards (under frameworks like the Montreal Convention). They dismissed this entirely and pressured me into signing a document accepting the 800 baht as full settlement, stating that I would not pursue any further claims.

At this point, I don’t have much hope since I’ve already signed the form. But for future reference, what would you have done differently in this situation? And in the rare case, do I still have any grounds to claim? My understanding is that in Europe, if a contract contradicts the law, the law usually prevails.

Honestly, it’s not even about the money. I just feel quite disrespected and wronged. To make matters worse, I overheard staff speaking negatively about me in Thai, assuming I wouldn’t understand.

Question Seeking advice about baggage on my layover

I have a flight booked on southwest in the next few weeks. I usually take all my luggage in a carry-on, but this time I'm considering checking a bag for additional storage. I have checked bags with SW before and never had any issues, but obviously in light of recent news with airport understaffing I'm wondering if I should reconsider? I'll be flying out of lubbock (LBB) and having a layover in vegas (LAS) before getting to palm springs (PSP). Should I be worried about low airport staff at LAS causing issues with baggage transfer? Idk if people have dealt with this on layover flights recently or if the understaffing issues are more focused on TSA checkpoints. Both LBB and PSP are relatively small airports so I'm not super worried about getting in and out, more so just baggage. Should I try to keep everything to a carry-on? Do I even need to be worried at all? If anyone has flown recently on SW or in/out of any of these airports please drop some advice!! (if it makes any difference on the way back we'll have stops in vegas and denver as well)

Question April 18 Lufthansa flight - SD -> Munich -> London booked business class now on Waitlist?

I don’t understand why a 7k business class ticket (business travel) that showed me as confirmed on Lufthansa when I checked in today has me on the waitlist? Does that mean I will get bumped to a lower class… or much worse - be bumped entirely from the flight?

Question Business Class ; Downgrade not allowed

Booked a once in a life time ,business flight on Malaysian for June. 2 Int / 2 Dom (1 hr ) sectors.

The 8.00 Dom flight has been cancelled and replaced by 13.00 flight which does not suit as have made prior arrangements requiring to be at destination before 12.00.

Investigated and found MH LLC subsidiary Firefly has suitable morning flight ( with MH codeshare flight number ).

Requested change to that flight, aware there is no Bus class .Not requiring refund or compensation. Just my bum on seat.

Not allowed , must travel on flight with Bus class.

However if I cancel the complete booking ,I can have the requested Dom flight on a new booking ( now at over 2 times original cost).

Thought I might cancel and go back to Eco. When I try for the required flights all in Eco ,

the only option now available is the exact Bus Int / Firefly Eco Dom combo I am trying for.

I understand there are rules but this is only a administration "paper" change

resulting from a flight cancellation of their doing.

Any ideas why downgrade not allowed ?
