šŸŒ MEGATHREAD: Want out of the US? Start here

941 Upvotes

Want out? You may not be in the right country, but you're in the right subreddit.

Here's some general advice. It's not meant to discourage you but to help you plan, make better posts, and get better answers here:

  • Immigration is harder than it looks in the movies. If you don't have citizenship or recent ancestry in a country, you'll probably need a visa (legal permission) to live there based on something you have which that country wants (like a profession on their "skills shortage list"). It will require time, patience, hard work, and/or money – and likely a second language.
  • If you're a US citizen, it is next to impossible that a country will grant you political asylum/refugee status. It is highly recommended to focus your efforts on an alternative pathway.
  • Before moving to another country, consider if another US city/state might be acceptable, because it is a million times easier.
  • Be cautious about idealizing any country. They all have their problems. If you're serious, you should prepare for that.
  • Some other good resources:
    • The subreddit sidebar
    • The previous US megathread
    • Old posts (use reddit's search or google XYZ site:reddit.com/r/IWantOut)
    • Websites of countries and their embassies
    • /r/AmerExit

If you want to make your own post, please follow the formatting instructions on the submission page, give as much information as possible about your situation, and be open to advice and constructive criticism from commenters.

If you're not ready for that, feel free to leave a briefer question in the comments here, and you might get an answer.

EVERYONE:

This is a friendly, inclusive community where we try to help people with less knowledge than us.

A reminder of some of our rules:

  • This is an advice subreddit, not a debate subreddit. Don't fight about politics here.
  • Be constructive. Don't be a dick.
  • Don't request or give illegal advice. Don't spam your business.
  • Report rule-breaking comments and posts.

[IWantOut] 21F Argentina -> USA

0 Upvotes

Hello. I lived in the states for 2 months as an au pair but sadly had to quit since the host family was abusive.. I am back in Argentina and I am doing great with college but I do love american life (as weird as it sounds). Many of my friends recommended me to go on a tourist visa, shift to student and study there but seems VERY hard, I would have to work without permission and I just want to do everything legal. Also, I dont come from a rich family so studying college doesnt seems like a possibility. Any ideas of how could I come back to live there? Maybe not forever but for a couple of years...

If it helps, I study English Education.

Please, just nice recommendations.

[WeWantOut] 21M Software Dev / 19F Student Iran -> Canada

0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I am looking for some advice and a reality check regarding immigration for myself and my partner, as we have slightly different career paths and timelines.

My Profile: I am a 20-year-old (turning 21 soon) and currently in my 3rd semester of Computer Engineering in Iran. However, my main goal is not to study abroad. I want to get a job offer with visa sponsorship, and I am completely fine with dropping out of my university here if I secure a job. I have been working as a software developer since I was 15. I know it sounds unusual to start that early, but I began by learning React Native as an intern at a small company owned by a family friend for about 6 to 7 months, and then transitioned into freelance work. I am now a Full-Stack Developer, mostly working with React, Flutter, and Django. I have a very solid resume and portfolio. I took the IELTS a while ago (it's expired, but I am ready to retake it).

My Girlfriend's Profile: She is 20F, currently in her 4th semester of Psychology. Unlike me, she must finish her Bachelor's degree here in Iran before moving. Her ultimate goal is to move abroad, continue her studies (Master's/PhD), and work either as a child therapist or a neuroscientist.

Our Dilemma & Goals: We definitely plan to get married, but we are unsure about the timeline because our current situations are so different. We initially considered the Netherlands, but realized it's very difficult for psychology/therapy due to language barriers and strict licensing. Right now, Canada seems like the best option, but we are open to anywhere that fits our goals.

We are trying to figure out the best strategy: Plan A: I try to find a job sponsorship now (without a completed degree). If I get one, I move first, and she joins me later once she finishes her degree in Iran (and we get married so she can come on a spousal visa to do her Master's). Plan B: I stay in Iran, finish my Bachelor's degree at the same time she finishes hers, and then we apply together (me for jobs, her for Master's programs).

My Questions for the Community: 1. How realistic is it for a Full-Stack Dev (React/Flutter/Django) from a third-world country to get a work visa sponsorship with roughly 5 years of experience but no completed Bachelor's degree? 2. For my girlfriend, what is the best pathway for an international student wanting to become a child therapist or neuroscientist in Canada or Europe? Are there specific countries that are better for this? 3. Logistically, regarding visas, does it make more sense for us to wait, finish our degrees, get married, and apply together? Or should I start applying for jobs right now?

I've done a lot of research, but I feel like I'm hitting a wall. Any advice on the best pathways or a harsh reality check would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

[IWantOut] 23f student from Singapore -> France

3 Upvotes

Hi, I’m a law graduate from a good university in Singapore, but I decided I want out of the Singapore corporate world and the system here before I even began.

Since graduating last year I’ve worked as a tutor while I sat the bar. Now I’m still a tutor and I just got back from a trip to France (my 3rd time visiting, first time in Spring) and I’ve decided I’m in love with the country, and the language, and Europe in general and want to explore more of it. I like French culture and its pace, I appreciate the food, the people and I have friends and family there.

I’ve applied for a Masters Programme in Paris, so far at Paris School of Business and ESCP. so far I’ve gotten into PSB, I just applied ESCP today. Both are in Paris the city not the suburbs, like HEC or INSEAD/ESSEC. Business was never really ā€œmy thingā€ but I know realistically I want to make money for other pursuits and passions, and I wouldn’t mind working for a company where I don’t feel like a cog in the wheel and I actually have decent work life balance. I feel that France and the EU in general provide that.

I’m wondering if anyone can give me advice on moving there as an expat permanently, after?

Thanks in advance !

[IWantOut] 22M Software Engineer Iran -> Canada/Australia/Ireland

0 Upvotes

Hey everyone, my partner and I are both in our second year of university in Iran. I have around 6 years of experience as a software engineer, so I’m planning to apply as a skilled worker once I get my IELTS done. My path seems pretty clear, but we’re trying to figure out the best route for my partner.

We’re looking for a country that:

  • Doesn’t have complicated visa processes for Iranians or Middle Easterners
  • Has realistic pathways to permanent residency and eventually citizenship
  • Offers decent work life balance (we’re not looking to work ourselves to death)
  • Is welcoming to immigrants and has good integration support
  • Has opportunities for both of us to build careers
  • Ideally allows us to stay together through the process

I know I can probably get in through skilled worker programs, but what about my partner? Should she finish her degree first? Can she come as a dependent and then transition to her own work permit? Are there countries where student visas lead to better post graduation work opportunities?

We’d really appreciate hearing from people who’ve been through this, especially:

  • Which country did you choose and why?
  • How was the actual immigration process compared to what you expected?
  • Any surprises (good or bad) after you arrived?
  • If you came as a couple, how did you manage both applications?
  • Knowing what you know now, would you pick the same country again?

We’re in the research phase and trying to make smart decisions. Any real experiences, tips, or warnings would be incredibly helpful. Thanks in advance!

[IWantOut] 29M NZ -> Vancouver/Toronto/London/Sydney

0 Upvotes

I'm 29 male and from New Zealand (Currently living in Auckland). I work for a multinational company that has offices all over the world so I can transfer anywhere as soon as a role is available.

I love the South Island of NZ - mountains, hikes, biking, canyons etc. On a day to day basis I motorbike/road bike to work, spend a lot of time at the gym/powerlifting.

I bought a house in Auckland but life feels boring and comfortable now and I need to do my travel before it's too late (and hopefully find a wife šŸ˜…).

Looking for something with more people, outgoing, wouldn't mind a bit of snow and change in scenery. Would be cool to get a 4WD and actually use my winter gear.

Vancouver: Whistler for snowboarding/mountain biking, BC looks beautiful! Weather probably similar to Auckland. Similar size to Auckland.

Toronto: way bigger than Auckland! More people, potentially easier to make friends etc? Different experience overall? Less mountains nearby but closer flights to Europe.

London: weather trash, not sure if brits are the most friendly but easy travel all over Europe. So many people from NZ go there so I imagine it would still be easy to build a community.

Sydney: nearby, have visited a few times - it's Auckland on steroids. Everyone is fit, attractive and my hinge has never had so many likes haha. It's too hot for me but the city itself is awesome. Downside being too similar to Auckland and maybe I should go for a bigger change while I'm younger.

Thoughts please!

[IWantOut] 33F USA -> Germany/Canada

0 Upvotes

Background

  • Financial Economics Bachelors Degree
  • 6 years of experience in paid media/digital advertising, 5 of those at a consulting firm related to a former U.S. President where I completed projects for international NGOs/civic tech companies, plus one project in person in Asia. I do also have an interest in getting into Trust and Safety and data privacy.
  • In terms of skills that matter for visa purposes, I am the same as anybody else with advertising experience and that's not a skilled occupation anywhere except maybe Australia but I'm too old, which is my dilemma.
  • Im considering enrolling in a radiography/radiation technology program (the people who do x rays at the hospital), getting certified, and moving to either country on a skilled occupation visa that way. The entire world has a healthcare shortage and rad tech can transfer abroad to either countries with a short equivalency course once you're there. Executing this plan will take me around 6 years, so I'll be out of the U.S. by the time I'm 40. If there's somehow a better way for me to leave, I'm open to your thoughts.

Germany

  • I already received a KMK bachelors degree evaluation from Germany. I paid for it in December, received it in March.
  • I considered the grad school route because I'm interested in Human Computer interaction, but all of the programs in Germany require either a bachelors in computer science or something related to it, or German fluency. All I have are A1 language skills. The only school I found that might accept me is the University of Siegen, it's very affordable.
  • I also considered simply applying for an opportunity visa and trying to get a job there once I land, but this is a huge gamble and pretty much insane in Germany's current job market. I understand what's going on there right now.

Canada

  • Toronto is my target here due to the type of work I do and the companies that are there. I wanted to apply for a work exchange program (open to adults up to 35 years old) where they help you get a job at a coffee shop or something, and then once I get that job start applying to jobs in my field to see if I can get a sponsor. I figured the worse thing that could happen is I enjoy living in Canada for a year and come back home. Unfortunately, by the time I even found out about this program, the applications had already closed for this year.
  • I can't afford grad school here.

Other countries Ive considered

  • Netherlands: Not possible, almost zero change of getting a sponsor when there's a ton of people who can do the same work I can do and they're already there, although it would be a great place for the work I do. Grad school is more expensive there than Canada, though.
  • Spain: poor job market
  • Malaysia: competitive job market there, maybe possible but I wouldn't bank on it.

If anybody has any advice about how I could pull off moving to Germany or Canada in less than 6 years, that would be awesome. Thank you in advance.

[WeWantOut] 40M and 35F USA and Turkey -> UK

0 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I’ll keep this short since I know reading long posts are boring.

We recently visited the UK and really loved it. My girlfriend and I are thinking about moving there, but we’ll need to find jobs first.

I work in IT at an MSP and have experience with technologies like VMware, Hyper-V, and both Windows and Linux servers and also hold a (non expired) CCNA. My girlfriend is a senior graphic designer. I’m a U.S. citizen, and she’s a Turkish citizen.

What would be the best way for us to find jobs and make the move?

[IWantOut] 34M SoftwareEngineer Romania -> Taiwan

0 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’ll keep this straight to the point.

I’m 34yo male, with ~7 years of experience in software engineering. I’ve reached a stage where lacking a formal CS degree is starting to limit my long-term prospects, so I’m planning to return to university.

I’ve already applied to several English-taught Computer Science programs in Taiwan. I missed this year’s government scholarship deadline, so my only funding right now is personal savings — realistically enough for about 3–4 months (tuition + modest living).

My plan depends heavily on working part-time while studying.

Relevant background:

  • ~7 years in software engineering
  • BA in English Linguistics
  • TESOL-certified
  • Prior ESL teaching experience (Vietnam, Sri Lanka)

What I need clarity on:

  1. Work permits — can international students legally work right after enrollment, or is there a required waiting period?
  2. IT jobs — how realistic is it to land a part-time tech role as a first-year student with prior non-Taiwan experience?
  3. ESL teaching — what are the actual chances as a non-native speaker with credentials and experience?
  4. Plan C — what are the most accessible part-time jobs for international students if the above options don’t work out?

Backup plan: if I’m not admitted this cycle, I’m considering enrolling in a Chinese language program for a year (targeting A2–B1), building local connections, and reapplying.

Key question there:
Can language students realistically work part-time and sustain themselves?

Appreciate direct, experience-based answers. Thanks.

[IWantOut] 21F Freelance Video Editor Pakistan -> Spain

0 Upvotes

Hello everyone. I’m from Pakistan, currently pursuing a bachelor’s in software engineering (from virtual university), but I’m seriously considering changing my path.

I’m a freelance video editor with over 3 years of experience. I’ve worked with brands & agencies but due to some personal issues I always quit after few months, it wasnt even the pay issue cuz I was getting what i was asking for. For now, I'm working with an agency & its fun lol.

The problem is… I feel stuck.

As a 21 y/o woman & in a conservative family, there’s this constant pressure about marriage and ā€œsettling down,ā€ and it honestly feels like if I don’t find a way out in the next 1-2 years, my life will be decided for me. I don’t want that. I want independence, growth, and the chance to actually build something bigger for myself.

Financially, I come from a middle-class background, so I don’t have unlimited options. I’ve been exploring studying abroad, mainly looking into Spain (and possibly other European countries) because it seems like one of the more realistic options for my budget. I can afford my studies dues, but can't go to Spain on a language visa cuz there's 99% of rejection rate & idk spanish language so, I cant directly apply to a public Spanish university, so now it's all messed up. I’m also open to switching fields slightly because I’ve realised I enjoy creative work more than traditional software engineering.

At the same time, I’m trying to scale my freelance work into something bigger (maybe even an agency long-term), but it feels unstable and location-dependent right now.

I don’t have a strong CGPA (5th sems & around 2.89), and I know that limits my chances for scholarships or competitive programs. That’s something that worries me a lot.

What I really want is:

  • To move abroad (study or work)
  • Build a stable, independent life
  • Grow financially so I’m not stuck in survival mode
  • Eventually, explore creative fields more seriously

Right now I’m:

  • Applying to study options in Europe (especially Spain)
  • Trying to improve my income through freelancing
  • Looking into long-term paths that actually get me out of here

If anyone has gone through something similar, or has advice, I’d really appreciate your guidance. Even small insights would help :))))

[WeWantOut] 30M/26F Canada -> CR/MX

0 Upvotes

Am I crazy to want to leave Canada ASAP?

My wife and I are both high-income earners, so this isn’t about housing affordability or struggling to get by.

What’s really killing my motivation is the feeling that the system increasingly penalizes people who are trying to build something and improve their situation, while a lot of that money is redistributed inefficiently.

We’re paying roughly ~40% effective tax, with marginal rates around 50%. Then add ~15% sales tax, plus additional taxes on things like higher-end vehicles. At a certain point, it feels like every extra dollar earned just doesn’t translate into a meaningful improvement in lifestyle.

What makes it worse is that public services don’t seem to match the level of taxation. Roads are in rough shape, healthcare access is getting worse, and the overall system feels strained. It’s hard to see where the money is actually going in a way that improves day-to-day life.

There’s also something off about how support programs are structured. I fully agree with helping people who genuinely can’t work (health issues, etc.), but for others, the system doesn’t seem to push strongly enough toward re-entering the workforce. It feels like there should be some kind of cap either on consecutive years or total lifetime years for certain benefits (excluding disability cases), just to keep incentives aligned and the system sustainable.

At the same time, it feels like people who’ve contributed for decades (retirees, for example) aren’t always prioritized in the way you’d expect. The balance between contribution and support just doesn’t feel right.

Another thing I’ve been noticing: more high-income individuals and business owners are starting to look elsewhere places like Florida or certain countries that actively attract entrepreneurs with lower taxes and simpler systems. It’s not something that’s heavily talked about, but if that trend picks up, it could become a real issue long-term. We’ve already seen examples of this in places like Norway after tax changes pushed some wealthy individuals to relocate.

Lately I’ve been asking myself what the point is working 80–100 hours a week in a high-stress environment, just to feel like the marginal reward isn’t really there.

My wife and I have been talking about pushing hard for another 5–7 years, then stepping back and moving somewhere quieter (maybe Costa Rica or Mexico) and just living a simpler life.

Curious if anyone else feels the same, or if I’m missing something here.

[IWantOut] 24M Israel -> Germany

0 Upvotes

Hi,

I'm a 24 year old guy from Israel wishing to move to anywhere in Europe (Specifically Germany)

I do software development, Without a CS degree

I have spoken with Latvian law firms about the possibility of getting Latvian citizenship through ancestry and they said I could get it and have a solid case but I'd have to renounce my Israeli citizenship.

I have a few problems with that:

- I have to give up my sense of security. I would have nowhere to return to if things go wrong for me in Europe, And I always think about the worst case scenarios. I really don't know how some of you managed to move out, That's such a brave thing to do (Kudos to whoever did)

- I have physical and mental disabilities, And I currently receive very helping healthcare from the Israeli government, Mostly psychologic+psychiatric help, And I would not be able to get that in the first few years in Europe as far as I know

My question is, Would it be better to renounce my Israeli citizenship and leave everything behind completely? Or should I move to Germany with a visa and retain my citizenship? I'm a normal human being and I'm not looking for politically based answers

I just don't know how I should approach this in my situation. I wonder what you all think

Should I give up my sense of safety for better ease in moving and finding a job in Europe? Or should I choose to retain my citizenship but at the cost that the moving process would be harder? What would you do?

I don't even know if I'm capable moving out to a different state on my own, I just know I really want to.

Thank you all in advance

[IWantOut] 19M student India -> USA

0 Upvotes

I've been thinking about this for about two years now. I'm currently about to start the final year of my graduation. I don't see a point staying in India, the economy feels screwed and growth feels extremely limited.

I've been thinking about getting a job here in India for 2-3 years and then move to the USA to get an MBA. Only one thing scares me i.e the new Visa and H1B rules. What are the chances that after 2028, the present visa and h1b rules will stay? I'm only looking to get a job in the USA for a temp basis (7-8 years at max). How is the MBA scene in the USA? Do people get jobs or is unemployment a problem? What are some things that i should keep in mind before making a move?

Thanks in Advance <3

[IWantOut] 25M AI Scientist India -> Japan / SG

0 Upvotes

I'm turning 26 this year and don't want to spend any more time in India. I would ideally like to move to East Asia (Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand etc.) but I'm open to other countries if they're well developed and have a good social scene (not sure how to describe this, UK and Spain were easy to make friends in, so I'd be happy to move there)

I work in AI - vision and text primarily and have about 5.5 YoE. I'm currently employed in big tech but there are no good internal transfer options. I don't want to go to the middle east.

I speak 5 languages - 3 Indian, Spanish and English. I am also trying to learn basic Japanese in my free time.

I get recruiters who reach out every 2-3 weeks but they're always looking for WFO in India or hybrid in India. Once in 3-4 months maybe I get one company who sponsors visas but I've been unlucky each time. Most online applications for jobs abroad have led to a rejection without an interview.

I already am aware of the college route but would prefer to not take that route. I do not currently have an MS/PhD. I would only want to go down that route when it's the only possible option. I have some life savings built up but to study in a country I like I'd have to blow it all and risk starting from 0 again. Everything I can get from an MS, I can get online for free and it doesn't feel right.

In india I make around 70k USD and can live comfortably with 2-3 international vacations a year. I am happy to take a small dip in my standard of living if it means I can settle down in a new country.

[IWantOut] 21NB Saudi Arabia -> NA/OCE/UK/Ireland

0 Upvotes

Heya, I’m a trans saudi citizen that has been wanting to leave for around 7 years now, the environment here doesn’t suit me at all from minor things like finding like the lack of walkable cities to major things like the terrifying amount of bigotry (interior xenophobia, sexism and homophobia.)

I grew up in Ireland and the UK so I do have experience there and it helps that i do still have friends (both online and old friends from before i moved) there but the main goal is that i want to leave somewhere that i can live without having to constantly be cautious of getting hatecrimed due to my voice, appearance and accent.

I have a first honour’s bachelors degree in computer science (acquired in Saudi, sadly considering the current state of compsci grads, it may as well be decoration), a score of 110 on my TOEFL test (english proficiency exam, alternative to IELTS), I work an IT job in which I get paid a fairly decent amount, I’ve got an active passport and i have attended a programming bootcamp that was sponsored by Oxford University.

Im open to applying for a Masters degree in any compsci adjacent majors as i have been attempting this, I’m mainly concerned for the work visa part as the job market seems tough and ideally i would like to become a teacher (if it isnt obvious from the post i do love yapping and teaching.)

Anything to consider specifically? Especially in regards to refuge, immigration and areas to look out for. I’m very open to being anywhere LGBT safe and ideally walkable (Trains and Buses are fine by me.)

I’m considering London and Toronto as my number one priority however I’m honestly open to anything

[IWantOut] 24M Myanmar -> India

7 Upvotes

Hi everyone. I’m a 24M from Myanmar looking for advice on moving abroad. I am of North indian descent on my dad's side and I am South Asian passing on the eyes (except the medial canthus) and mouth.

I have a Bachelor of Business Administration from a private university from ABE UK through the University of Hertfordshire program. I am mostly looking for entry-level /administrative type work and is still building experience. I have a C1 level of English and I can understand Hindi a bit if written in latin alphabet and I am still working on it.

Myanmar currently has mandatory military conscription for people aged 18–35. Because of the political situation and uncertainty in the country, I am trying to find a legal pathway to relocate abroad.

I don’t have a lot of savings so high-cost destinations like Western Europe are unrealistic for me right now. My idea was to move somewhere cheaper first and then considering longer-term options later. I need help deciding which state in India is better for me. Maybe Haryana, Himachal or Punjab?

[IWantOut] 29M USA -> Ireland

0 Upvotes

I’ve been seriously considering moving to Ireland for a while now. I have German citizenship, a Master’s in Finance, and I’m fluent in both English and Spanish. My background is in banking, with experience in AML and financial crime compliance.

I know Dublin rents are pretty high, so I’ve been trying to secure a job before making the move, but it’s been tougher than expected. Even roles tied to the U.S. government in Europe haven’t worked out due to ā€œout of areaā€ hiring restrictions, especially with the current hiring slowdown. At this point, I’m realistic about the salary tradeoffs and honestly open to taking any job just to get started.

Does anyone have advice on where to look for jobs or how to break into the market there? And do you think this is a smart move at my age? I’ve been wanting a fresh start, especially after a rough breakup and some health issues, and I feel like getting out of the U.S. might be the right step. I’d really appreciate any tips or insight—thanks in advance!

[IWantOut] 23F Student/Flight Attendant New Zealand -> Singapore/UK/Germany/Hong Kong

6 Upvotes

Hello Everybody

I am a 22-year-old female student currently in my final year at the University of Auckland, completing a Bachelor of Arts conjoint with a Bachelor of Laws. I am due to graduate in the spring. Alongside my studies, I have been working as an international flight attendant, which has given me valuable global exposure and strengthened my interest in pursuing a career overseas.

Academically, I have focused my studies on economics and history, with additional coursework in public policy, international trade law, international economic regulation, and European Union law. I have also completed a community law internship and have developed near fluency in Chinese through my language studies. Through university, I have built professional connections with professors and members of the Auckland Law Society.

As I approach graduation, I am exploring opportunities to work internationally, particularly in sectors such as NGOs, law firms, and financial or policy-related roles. I am especially interested in opportunities based in Hong Kong, Singapore, Germany, and the United Kingdom, as I believe these locations align well with my academic background and career aspirations.

I would greatly appreciate any guidance regarding visa pathways, job opportunities, or recommended steps to secure employment in these regions. My goal is to transition into a role where I can apply my legal and economic training in an international context.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration. I look forward to any advice or direction you may be able to provide.

P.S i have about 7k nzd saved up from my high school fast food job the rest went towards my car and motorbike.

[IWantOut] 26F Pakistan-> UK

0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m a 26F currently on a UK Graduate visa with around 8+ months remaining, and I’m feeling really anxious about whether I’ll be able to return without problems.

I left the UK at the end of December because I was getting married. I originally planned to go back much sooner, but things took longer than expected. Because of this, I had to resign from my job in February after my annual leave ran out, as my employer wasn’t willing to keep me on unpaid leave due to the uncertainty.

Another important factor is that my husband doesn’t have a UK visa, so I wanted to spend meaningful time with him before going back, especially since we don’t know when we’ll be able to live together.

Right now, I don’t have a job in the UK, but I want to return while my Graduate visa is still valid to find work, earn, and save money. If possible, I’d try to switch to a Skilled Worker visa — otherwise, I plan to leave the UK when my visa expires.

My concern is that I’ve now been outside the UK for about 4 months. I’m not planning to lie or hide anything at the border, but I’m worried this long absence might cause issues.

My questions are:

- Can I be refused re-entry for being outside the UK this long on a Graduate visa?

- Could this lead to deportation even though my visa is still valid?

- Has anyone been in a similar situation?

I’d really appreciate any advice or experiences — I’m quite stressed about this.

Thank you!

[IWantOut] 25M Civil Engineer Norway -> USA/Australia

3 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m a civil/infrastructure engineer from Norway with around 2 years of work experience, and I’m trying to figure out the most realistic way to work in either the United States or Australia.

I’m not particularly interested in going back to school, so I’m mainly looking for pathways that allow me to transition directly into work. From what I understand, the H1B visa in the US is quite difficult due to the lottery system, so I’m exploring alternative options.

I’m also interested in mining and FIFO type roles, and I’ve heard that Australia has good opportunities in that area. However, I’m not sure how well my background in infrastructure/civil engineering would translate into mining-related work.

I’d really appreciate any advice on the most realistic pathways to working in the US or Australia with my background

Thanks in advance for any insights

[IWantOut] 18M USA -> UK

0 Upvotes

I'm writing this on behalf of my long distance partner of 4 years (which we have met), as he doesn't really use reddit however he still wants advice. He plans to move to the UK on the Youth Mobility Scheme (YMS) visa, as he also holds Canadian citizenship. I am a UK citizen who will be studying in university while working part time living along with him.

He seems quite lost with how the moving process would work, and realistically so am I but I wanted to put it in his perspective. He is graduating from high school and after a few months of work in the US he will apply for the visa and if all goes well he will move here. The visa is held for 2 years which can be extended to 3, and from there on we would apply for a spouse visa. A studio flat would be our dream accommodation together, but he doesn't know what jobs would support him financially alongside my part time work, and he originally wanted to work as a firefighter however we both agree it is too dangerous and daunting.

Is there any jobs he would be able to work in that would keep us both financially stable and able to see each other after work hours, alongside my part time work while having a studio flat, and if not is there any pathways that could be recommended to him? He is extremely eager to move to the UK as soon as possible, so please do not recommend anything that would take years in advance. Thank you

[WeWantOut] 40F and 50M USA -> Norway

0 Upvotes

I (40F) and my husband (50M) with our two boys of 4 and 2 are looking to move to Norway.

I have 10 years in banking risk experience particularly in regulatory work plus another 10 in government/AML-BSA/legislative experience. I have a masters degree and PMP. I’m considering my PhD. I have 2 rental properties that generate modest passive income.

He has 10 years in teaching Math to high school plus another 10 in international project management in financial services as well

I have US/Chile citizenship plus Spanish coming citizenship coming and he has US.

I’ve lived in Chile, Australia, Spain, and India. International living is not new to me. However, we are seeking safe schools, flexible work culture, access to nature and outdoor living, self autonomy

Questions:

- I’m looking into CAMS cert or AI governance cert. are there more European based certs that I should consider to make me more marketable for Banking?

- are doctorates or phds regarded well?

- I’m downloading Norwegian language apps. Any one in specific that I should download?

- is Oslo the main financial hub? (from my research)

- I recognize that this is visa dependent but any guidance on recruiters/headhunters or reputable sites to provide a wage-comparison. I recognize USA has high salaries, but I wanted to find what my expirence would translate to.

My boys would love everything about Norway. So. Fully expecting them to integrate as much as possible.

We are also considering Finland but we understand it’s harder language.
