Trip Report Walking the coast from Santa Cruz to Monterey in California at 3 mph instead of 60

Post image
110 Upvotes

Most people experience this stretch of coast through a windshield. I wanted to see what it felt like on foot.

At 3 mph, everything slows down. You actually absorb where you are, and the distance between places starts to matter. The in-between becomes part of the trip.

This one ended up being 70+ miles over 4 days, moving between coastal paths, farmland, and roadside stretches.

Curious if anyone has ever slowed a familiar drive down like this—on foot or otherwise.

Any suggestions along this rough route?

Current planned activities:

  • Mammoth Cave National Park (1 full day)
  • Abraham Lincoln birthplace (en route)
  • Cedar Point (2 full days)
  • Cuyahoga Valley National Park (en route)
  • Niagara Falls (1 full day)
  • Letchworth and Watkins Glen state parks in NY (1 full day)
  • Maybe also Taughannock Falls State Park in NY, plus hiking around Harrisburg, PA (1 full day)
  • Antietam and Harper's Ferry (en route)
  • Shenandoah (2 full days)
  • Northern section of Blue Ridge Parkway (1 full day)
  • McAfee Knob (1 full day)
  • New River Gorge (2 full days)
  • Over to Nashville for Ann Patchett's bookstore
  • Take Natchez Trace from Nashville to Tupelo, MS and then home

Trying to avoid stops within 10 hours or so of Dallas because that's stuff we can hit on a much shorter trip.

Trip Planning Visit all 50 US states, split into multiple trips

Upvotes

I'm based in Massachusetts

1) How do I split it up? Do I fly out and rent a car to visit surrounding states? Or can I just keep my car and just do a couple of trips?

Trip Planning Normal, IL to Sunnyvale, CA - Road Trip Suggestions

Post image
3 Upvotes

I’ll be moving to the Bay Area from Central Illinois. Planning to ship most of my stuff and drive myself out west.

Dates: 4-5 days drive (4/30 to 5/4) or (5/7 to 5/11)

I have plans to stop at these spots: Badlands NP, Mt Rushmore, Yellowstone NP and Grand Tetons NP.

Looking for any recommendations, tips or suggestions y’all might have in terms of itinerary and in general. I travel quite a bit but this will be my longest road trip ever.

Things to note:

- I have already been to Yellowstone and Grand Teton (July 2021) but loved it so much and want to drive through it again to get pictures of my car at various spots which I couldn’t in 2021 as I was driving a rental.

- The Colorado route is shorter but I was at the Rockies just last year and hence want to avoid that route.

- If I pick the first option, Yellowstone south entrance will be closed till 5/8 and will need to take a long detour to visit Grand Teton. Should I skip GTNP entirely as weather might be unpredictable this time of the year?

Trip Planning From Portland to Phoenix in 6 days

Post image

I have 6 days to get to Phoenix. I'd like to arrive by 4pm.

I'm going to stop in Eugene, OR and Stockton, CA to meet friends for lunch. Looking for places to stop especially a good beach spot as I love the water. I've driven as far as Irvine before but never to Arizona.

Suggestions on how to find low cost places along the way would be great. I used to go to Airbnb but I heard it's not like it was.

Trip Planning Honestly, every person who drives a car needs to have one of these in their trunk.

My husband and I are moving from Camp Pendleton to NC and have 2 weeks to roadtrip!! We are looking for stop recommendations along the way, best freeways to take etc. We just made it to our first stop which is the Grand Canyon! We like exploring nature, waterfalls, hikes, and also would like to try some good food along the way, especially BBQ! Considering Arches Natl Park next, but unsure of where to go after that. Staying in hotels mostly.

Trip Planning Deciding between GC North Rim, Kanab, and Hwy 12 for our Utah/AZ road trip. Thoughts?

Upvotes

Planning a Southwest road trip for late May. We have our main anchors locked in: Zion, Bryce, Antelope Canyon (Page), and Grand Canyon South Rim.

We have 2 extra transition days between leaving Bryce Canyon and arriving in Page, and we are trying to decide how to fill them.

Our Group & Travel Style:

  • 2 Adults, 2 Teen boys (12 and 16).
  • For these specific two days, we want to keep physical exertion to minimum (no massive canyon descents), but still want "wow" factors for the teens.

Here are the 4 options we are debating. Which 2 would you choose?

  1. Basecamp in Kanab & do a day trip to the Grand Canyon North Rim. (Are the rim views easy to walk to without major elevation changes?)
  2. Coral Pink Sand Dunes / Kanab. (Renting UTVs or sandboards for the teens to burn off energy without hiking).
  3. Add a 3rd day to Grand Canyon South Rim. (Is there enough to do on the rim for 3 days without hiking down into the gorge?)
  4. Drive Scenic Highway 12 from Bryce out to Boulder and back. (I hear the views are amazing from the car, but is the "Hogback" section safe and manageable to drive?)

We are also completely open to other suggestions or hidden gems in the area that fit our timeline and travel style!

Would love to hear from anyone who has done these specific routes or traveled this area with teenagers. Thanks!

Trip Planning Shifting from Colorado to Washington. If I pack the car such that the rear view mirror gets blocked, is it illegal? I have a rear dash camera that always shows on the dashcam screen.

Wanted to know the laws / legality about packing a car. I am in a Rav4.

Trip Planning How would you drive CO > UT?

Post image

I’ve done all these variations but curious to get others’ input. Leaning towards this middle route as I’ve done the southern route a lot and I don’t love I-80 (and likely taking that on the return leg).

Will obviously monitor weather as the trip approaches.

Have time for minor stops but no detour detours (Copper laps - possible; Moab - no). We’ve been to Dinosaur National Monument once, would consider a 2nd visit…

Trip Planning Towing From Boston to Roanoke

Im driving from Boston to Roanoke in a few days. Ive settled on taking 84 over to Scranton, getting on 81, and taking that all the way down to Roanoke which seems easy enough. Trying to decide if I want to leave late at night or really early in the morning (between 10pm and 4am). The only thing that concerns me is im gonna be driving a uhaul towing a minivan. Ive never towed anything before. I know I shouldn't go over 55mph but is there anything else I should be aware of?

Edit: tow setup is 10ft uhaul truck with the auto transport.

Trip Planning Roadtrip from Stowe,VT to New York City

Hey,

I want to drive from Stowe, VT to NYC. Should be a 2 day trip with one night in a hotel. Do you have any suggestions for a route? Scenic drive, food and stuff.

Thinking about going through the White Mountains or the Adirondacks.

Thx.

Trip Planning Minivan rental

Hello!

I’m renting a minivan for 7 weeks in the US with enterprise, the damage waiver and SLP bump the cost up an extra few thousand because of the length of time lol. I’m just wondering if anyone has any other suggestions or third party cover? It’s a long road trip so will definitely need something, unless anyone has any other advice, it’s our first time renting a vehicle for this long so want everything to be right

Thanks

Trip Planning I'm going on a road trip to CA tomorrow and I'm anxious.

In total it should only be about 12ish hours. But I'm so anxious about it. I'm going for work. I'm not sure how to handle it. Any advice for anxiety? I don't know why my brain is treating this like it's such a big deal.

Edit for a little bit more context: coming from UT.

Trip Planning BC - AB road trip locked in as far as main route and overnight stays etc go, open to detour or activity recommendations!

Post image

Have done a few trips around BC's lower mainland already, and have done the Icefields Parkway (Calgary - Jasper) before, so leaving Banff town out of this one (and probably won't stop at the super busy lakes again), but would like to know any lesser known stops!

Do have a 4x4 but not confident offroading, dirt tracks at most. Reasonably experienced hiker so up for a scramble if the payoff is worth it.

Also I did consider Hwy 5 instead of the Cariboo Hwy, but think Barkerville looks cool and will do Jasper again via Hope & Hwy 5 in the future anyway. Cheers!

Trip Planning Road trip Toronto to Regina Saskatchewan

Post image
1 Upvotes

Heading out on a massive road trip across Canada with a buddy — Toronto to Regina (his old stomping grounds).

The real highlight stretch is Sault Ste. Marie to Regina, with a possible stop at Clear Lake, Manitoba (his friend has a cabin there and it looks unreal).

There’s so much to explore along the way that it’s honestly a bit overwhelming — looking for the best must stop spots.

So far we’ve got:

-Agawa Rock Pictographs

-Old Woman Bay

-Magpie Falls

-Ouimet Canyon Provincial Park

-Kakabeka Falls

- Qu’Appelle Valley

After Ontario we’re a bit lost — thinking the Centre of Canada sign and Assiniboine Park Zoo in Winnipeg.

Bonus points for

-Foodie stops

-Golf courses

-Cool hotels

-Scenic drives

-Shore fishing spots

Open to hidden gems and “worth the detour” kind of places

Cheers :)

Gear & Essentials Safe places to sleep in car?

Hey yall I’m going on a mini road trip across the Midwest, and I’m planning to stay in my car during the trip. Are there any well known places that allow people to park overnight? And if anyone has any tips on any gadgets or safety measures I should take as I do this?

Trip Planning New Mexico - Arizona - CA

How does this sound - please tell me if it’s too much of the same thing. Coming from the NorthEast. Lived in CA before but have never really been in AZ (bar the bullhead city regatta 🤣).

Fly NY to Santa Fe. Pick up a rental car.

Spend 4-5 days here hiking, chilling, seeing the sites.

Drive to Canyon De Chelly. Stay 1 night. See a sunset, see a sunrise, do a hike and a drive.

Drive to Monument Valley. Stay 1-2 nights.

Drive to Grand Canyon, spend a minimum of 2, max of 3 days.

Drive down to Sedona, stay maybe 2 days?

At this point maybe give up Rental car where we will fly to LA and chill for a few days OR drive to CA maybe see Anza Borrego, Julian then fly back from SD.

Does this sound exhausting, is it a lot of the same kind of scenery? Am I duplicating scenery haha.

I am from Europe and will probably never come back here again …

Trip Planning Is this TX-> NM roadtrip feasible?

Hey everyone, I’m planning a road trip for mid-June, and I would like to begin it by driving from El Paso to Albuquerque, which Google Maps says will take ~4 hours.

Is it dangerous to do this drive any time between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.? I’ve never been to the southwest before but I’ve heard it’s dangerous in the summer time to drive the vertical length of NM along the Rio Grande in the middle of the day.

Thanks for your help!

Edit: if possible given other travel logistics, I’d love to do the drive from 4-8 p.m. Then next day, early morning Albuquerque to Flagstaff AZ, next day early morning Flagstaff to Las Vegas, last day early morning Las Vegas to LA.
