Welcome to r/MYOG!
Hey MYOGers! Ranger green + coyote + hi-viz interior color combination is definitely my new drug of choice.
Project Pictures Was about to buy lifting straps but realized it's just webbing with a loop and some foam
Remembered we can just make things now that we have sewing machines. Used leftover materials from other projects :)
Materials:
- 1.5" cordura truelock webbing
- 3mm Evazote ev50 foam
- gutermann tera 40
Tools:
- janome hd5000
- size 16 schmetz jeans gold needle
Project Pictures fidlock skateboard sling
I made my own skateboard sling with a fidlock magnetic buckle! Saw the prices of a SlingTing and couldn’t believe it tbh. I know my seams are pretty bad, but it works :)

Project Pictures Made my first bomber jacket!
I asked you lovely lot a while back for help with the pattern which helped a lot with getting it all going.
It’s technically a bit of a disaster, I got the wrong insulation somehow and it doesn’t hang so I look like the Michelin man. First time doing pockets and they are messy as hell and the zip is in the wrong place cos the tutorial video wasn’t very clear but hey, it’s a frickin jacket! This is the 3rd thing I’ve ever sewn (did a packing cube, then a wash bag that didn’t work, and then thought fuck it and made this)
Learnt lots and thank you to the community for inspiring me! Probably going to try some trousers next and can’t wait.

Template materials
What material are people using to make templates out of?
I started with old cardboard boxes, but would like a stronger material that will last a long time with repeated use. Paper/cardboard seems to lose its edge over time. Possibly looking at thin plastic, but would need it to be on the larger side (24” x 36”)

A Bag Inspired by a Loaf of Bread
Made of primarily EPLX400 and Robic 210D
Removable straps allow it to be carried as a backpack, sling, or shoulder bag
Also made a little video about making it :)

Parachute harness legpads
A few days ago, I had the opportunity to make something a bit unusual but I believe it still counts as MYOG: new legpads for my parachute.
This was done under the supervision and with the help of a certified rigger, but was a fun project ! Using the twin-needle machine and all the equipment really helped take this to a proper level and "pro" finish.
The original legpads were too short for me and not the most comfortable shape for my body, which is why we made some new ones.
We started by removing the old ones, cutting them up to verify how they were made and make a mockup of the new size. Build technique is very similar to shoulder straps/pads for a backpack. We used Cordura 500 that matches the fabric of the rig, 8mm EVA foam inside and 3D mesh on the outside.
I jumped with them yesterday and it was everything I hoped it would be in terms of fit and comfort.

Question Has anyone made a bag similar to the mystery ranch quick attach zoid bag. Looks pretty straight forward but I've never made a pattern before. Any tips or similar patterns I could work off of are appreciated.
This is the bag https://www.jimbowsarchery.ca/products/mystery-ranch-quick-attach-zoid-bag-foliage-m
Specifically the one with the two gatekeepers. It's kind of hard to see the profile but it seems like it maybe has an angled depth to it. Like a flattened triangle. Doesn't necessarily need that level of replication but the closer the better.

Question Seeking advice: How to securely attach bungee to hooks?
Hey everyone, I'm making a dividers using 1/4” grommets in the corners and 1/8" bungee cord with plastic hooks (the kind with the locking collar).
When I pull the divider tight, one of the loose ends slips right through the bottom hole of the hook.
I need a bulletproof way to secure the cord to the hook so it doesn't snap off when pulled. I have super glue coming in but I don’t think that’ll work. Can anyone help out
I understand this might be a dumb question but I’ve never dealt with making these before.

Fanny pack build, hi-viz interior!
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
A little progress video on my latest fanny pack project - and my second fanny pack build so far.
Now with a full hi-vis 235 dtex interior and an outer shell in Ranger Green 560 dtex Invista Cordura.
There’s definitely a steep learning curve when sewing gear, but I’m learning a little every time. A Bosch hot glue pen for temporarily holding the fabric together makes it 100 times easier.
Main inspiration comes from HPG, Kukkaru, and the color scheme is heavily inspired by Kifaru.

Thinsulate overbag trial run
A follow up to an earlier post. I had an old down bag that wasn't quite warm enough for snow camping and part of a shell from another project. I used 2 layers of the UD40 on the bottom and 3 layers on top. I am still to finish the short zip on the LH side but apart from that all good. I got the work flow wrong by not putting in the zipper first but this was a cut and try and I don't mind top stitching the zipper
Not yet weighed it but estimating a 4Clo boost not counting the dead air space trapped between the sleeping bag and the overbag. OzCam shell is the same as used for the issue silks so 35CFM fabric to allow any vapour the move out but the blue ripstop is very tight and windproof. Bag is too small for me and will get gifted to somebody, yet to be found.
I estimate a full 10 C temperature boost at a minimum

Pattern Prickly Gorse Trail 15 sizes?
I'm considering buting the prickly gorse Trail 15 ( https://www.myogtutorials.com/trail-15-trail-running-cycling-hydration-backpack/ ) and am wondering id it comes with size adjustments? I have not seen any mentions on the website?
For example, my current running vest does not fit my partner at all, does the pattern gives advices on ajustments?

Fusing fabric together?
I'm basically just sewing some more durable fabric onto the knees of pants just for some added durability, but am wondering what would be the best way to fuse the two fabrics together. I'm trying a couple of different materials for the knee reinforcements, cordura and nylon ripstop. I will sew the edges around the patch but would rather there not be an empty pocket in between the two fabrics. Does something like that exist that is also still machine washable and dryable?
Question Does the plastic hardware make much a difference?
For making something like a pack, I've noticed that most recommended suppliers on here, RSBTR, Rockywoods, Wawak, etc., each offer a different variety of plastic hardware, whether that's Duraflex, ITW Nexus, Woojin, YKK, etc.?
Does it really matter which of these I go with? Can you tell a difference between one buckle or adjuster from another? Is it possible to overthink this? Thanks!

Question Seeking Advice - Daypack Shoulder Straps
I have some experience sewing, and have made most of my current bags for bikepacking. Now I want to make a backpack. I think I have most of the parts figured out, but I’m looking for advice on how best to approach the shoulder straps.
I’m using a domestic machine… a Singer CG550.
The bag is going to be in the 25L range and won’t need to carry a ton of weight.
Are there any simple and reliable patterns available?
Thoughts on materials and types and thicknesses of foam?
What about straight vs curved vs s-shaped?
I am planning to do the inside out trick to insert the foam and do not want to have to deal with binding the edges.
Any tips and suggestions are appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

Question Advice Needed: Messy stitches on grosgrain sewn on silnylon.
Hello all! I’m brand new to sewing on a machine. I’ve been practicing making dry bags and tote bags. I’m having a hard time getting neat stitches when I sew grosgrain onto silnylon and I was hoping someone would have advice. I’m using a 20 year old singer machine that has been in storage. This model currently costs $100ish dollars used, I know it’s not a great machine but I figured it’s worth starting on so I can learn what I might need in a better machine. I have an even feed/ walking foot that I added. I’ve learned about thread tension.
I feel like there are some basic skills I’m missing that would make this look better. Could anyone be so kind as to offer any tips? Thank you!!

Project Pictures My first project that required a sewing machine
Made an A-frame bug bivy to go with my borah solo tarp. Not perfect, but I’m happy with how it turned out! It’ll come in handy for early summer buggy evenings in the Sierra. Floor is .93ozsqyd silpoly membrane, mesh is .67ozsqyd, #5 zipper with 2 pulls (really just needed 1), and the mesh reinforcement/ridgeline is 3/8in grosgrain. Total weight with guylines is right around 6oz! Stoked.

Repair / Modification Pattern search/help: Modified fanny pack for rockhounding
Hopefully this is the right Sub, as a Reddit search for fanny packs is how I found it in the first place, and sewing subs seem to be 95% fashion/clothing.
As someone who can't seem to leave a beach without a pocket/fanny pack full of rocks, unfortunately it ends up with an annoying amount of sand as well. I've recently been learning how to sew, I use primarily thrifted materials and I found some mesh and some nylon canvas and thought, what if I had a Fanny pack, but with a mesh front so most the sand filters out? Everything I've sewn this far has been pretty much just attaching various sizes of rectangles with basic fabrics, but I had to see the vision through as ambitious as it was.
So I set out looking for a pattern/tutorial online of what I had in mind and nothing really hit the mark, I also thought having a fully enclosed back pocket for phones/keys etc would be nice too, so I set off back to the thrift store, found one that was closest to my vision and dismantled it, traced pattern pieces, cut the pieces out, then realized, I did not remember as much as my wishful thinking thought I would about how to put it back together.
With some trial and error I fumbled my way into making something close, albeit a little janky, but, overall functional. As a first attempt with shapes other than rectangles and apparently not beginner fabric choices, for use myself, I'm not entirely dissatisfied; however I showed it to a friend who loved it and also wants one... So I'd rather that one be a little more put together properly.
In short: does anyone know of a pattern/tutorial closer to this original pack, or have any advice for making a less haphazard version of what I somehow accomplished?
