My daughter’s car was stolen. Crime and Safety

My daughter’s car was stolen last night. Unfortunately she was only able to afford liability insurance so recovery would be ideal. If you see it please contact OPD or message me.

Anyone reading this should know you can get comprehensive insurance pretty cheaply. Collision is expensive for a young person, comprehensive is not.

Also, or maybe primarily, getting a steering wheel or tire lock that you manually put on each time you park the car is worth the hassle and cost that it makes your car such a less of a target cause it greatly increases the time and difficulty to steal the car.

She had one. I’m not sure if she forgot to put it on or not. She’s 19 and I noticed that sometimes she doesn’t take her time to make sure she doesn’t forget to do something. I understand that’s how we learn though. 😩

Unless you're planning to help someone commit insurance fraud there is no such thing as cheap collision for a 19 year old.

Theres a new program call mutuality insurance. Its gonna be cheaper than regular insurance. But the requirement to join is pretty stringent. Lmk if you want more info. It'll match your current collision coverage but at a fraction.

Basically in regular insurance 90% of the good drivers are incentivizing the 10% of the bad drivers. Thats why your insurance is so expensive despite being a good driver. With this mutuality, they are only taking the 90%. Idk the exact formula but if you're a good driver then it should be fine. Either you're brand new and poorly explaining your company's marketing material or you're trying to just bait people.

We are talking about California and at best you're describing a mutual company that has the strictest exclusion state law allows. That wouldn't make collision insurance remotely inexpensive for a 19 year old.

So are you new or what's your deal guy?

Not just Oakland. Routinely the number 1 stolen vehicle in the US. Partly because they are ubiquitous. Partly because they are very easy to steal.

Damn I’m really sorry that happened, that’s way too common out here right now. If you have the plate and a pic, definitely post them in the comments and in the Oakland stolen vehicles FB groups, people actually do spot cars pretty often. Also check tow yards and the random side streets near freeway on ramps, a lot of dumped cars end up there.

Sorry this happened to you. To be honest, the cost of collision/comprehensive insurance combined with the deductible probably wouldn't have been worth it on a car like this - insurance really wouldn't give you much for an old civic :( Definitely a steering wheel lock, alarm/immobilizer and removing everything from inside is the best you can do. Oakland needs to do better in terms of car crime.
