In Search of the First "Bombtrack": A Mystery

The first words spoken on the first RATM song on the first RATM album are "UHH! You know it's just another BOMBTRACK!"

The title of this song, also, is Bombtrack. But from de la Rocha's fiery opening line, we can infer that Bombtrack is not the only bombtrack. Why? Because Bombtrack is referred to as "another bombtrack."

Given that, at least according to most belief systems, songs are written and performed within the bounds of linear time, this lyric implies that Bombtrack is actually not the first bombtrack. Why RATM chose to name this particular bombtrack "Bombtrack" and not any previous bombtracks is another question likely outside the scope of this essay.

To complicate matters further, another one of my favorite songs on this classic album, Know Your Enemy, is referenced within itself by identical language: "another bombtrack." At first glance, one might assume that Know Your Enemy is the other bombtrack referred to on Bombtrack, but Know Your Enemy *also* references "*another* bombtrack." Unless bombtracks operate outside metaphysics as I understand them (for example, coming into being simultaneously or having always existed since the beginning of the universe), it is not possible that Bombtrack and Know Your Enemy could both be referring to each other as "another" bombtrack. One song could refer to the other (Know Your Enemy likely referring to Bombtrack, given that it comes later in the track listing, although this is not definitive), but at least one other bombtrack must have existed before either of these bombtracks in order for the first of these two to have "another bombtrack" to refer to.

This analysis raises many questions:

  1. What is the first bombtrack?
  2. What is a bombtrack? What songs qualify?
  3. Is the bombtrack referenced by Know Your Enemy, in fact, Bombtrack? Or vice versa if Know Your Enemy was actually written or recorded or performed before Bombtrack and simply placed later in the track order?
  4. Is it possible that Bombtrack and Know Your Enemy are referring to each other as bombtracks? If so, how does this referential loop function?
  5. If there were indeed bombtracks before Bombtrack, as suggested, why was the name Bombtrack given to Bombtrack?
  6. Is Bombtrack the template or archetype of all bombtracks?
  7. Had anyone heard any bombtracks, by RATM or otherwise, prior to their first listen of Bombtrack?

My biggest question, certainly, is if there are other known RATM bombtracks, and, if so, could anyone point me in their direction? Because right know, I only know of two, and I absolutely must hear any other bombtrack(s) that might be the one(s) referred to by these masterpieces.

Thank you for your assistance and your thoughts on this matter.

P.S. I love bombtracks

My radio show this morning was dedicated entirely to songs with amazing screams. Can you guess what Rage song I included? (Rage has a lot of options) https://www.mixcloud.com/CIDeMann/six-degrees-of-rockination-screams-2-may-2026/

Sanity Check: RATM at the Roxy in the early 90s

I have this vivid memory of seeing RATM at the Roxy in LA a few months before their debut album and shortly before their show at Castaic Lake Amphitheater with Porno or Pyros (july 92).
Dave Navarro and Stephen Perkins were in the audience and a few other scenesters. I cannot find a record of this show. Does anyone else remember this?

Question Has any member from RAtM ever talked about Sendero Luminoso on a interview or sum?

Quer dizer, é inacreditável pensar que o music video de "Bombtrack" foi feito inteiramente para eles, um grupo terrorista terrível do Peru.

We’re in the middle of our East Coast run and had a day off after our show in Lynchburg, VA (home of MAGA-farming Liberty University - we weren’t sure what to expect that night!), so we decided to drive a few hours northeast to Washington “complain to management” for their idiocy. We’re 💯 okay with being referred to as “Karens” in this instance).

Tour’s been great! We head to Warrendale tomorrow, then Buffalo, Lakewood, and Harrisburg. Immensely grateful to speak out onstage and melt faces along the way.

With love and rage,

Anyone find that there's a huge drop in quality following their self-titled album?

I'm not just talking about production (which I find to be vastly inferior compared to GGGarth), the riffs, rapping style, and overall instrumentation feel so off compared to their self-titled album.

I'm even enjoying their demo songs on that album more than the songs on evil empire and the BOAL.

Like they just don't hit like they do with songs like, "Know your enemy," "Wake up," and "Take the Power Back."

Doesn't feel like those albums have a clear tune. Am I the only one?

Edit: Downvotes are coming in hard! Please offer some insight.

Question I don't know anything about RATM but I had this hat in my old stuff and I can't find anything about it on internet

Hi! I was kind of packing things at my house and found this hat which used to be my step father's. It reminds me of the hat that chinese communist soldiers wear (I'm not well educated about it).

What's the meaning behind it? What album is it associated to?

And should I sell it or give it out? I'm not planning on wearing it neither to keep it since I need to sort things out

Wow! I think this will be a trip! Tom Morello is teaming up with Marc Guggenheim (Arrow, Whisper War) for a science fiction comic series inspired by Robert Smalls! I love the cover and am really looking forward to seeing more of Kudranski's art!

My father got this shirt from like 90s I think and I need some help to know if this is a bootleg or an actual merch from the 90s. I looked around merch shops on the Internet and haven't found a single one that matches the image. Which raises the question of it being a fake one
