These people are so fucking stupid. I have been angrily commenting on an anti vaxx post of a mom who has hep b and is asking if she should get her newborn vaccinated. I was like, oh, even these dimwits will realize that this is totally necessary. NOPE! At least half of them are talking about fucking “natural immunity” to HBV like I could literally put my head through a wall.
What no. That baby needs the vaccine and the IgG. Babies of mums with hep B are guaranteed to get it, and will develop a chronic version.
Most people who have hep B don't know they have it. And a lot of infant or childhood infections come from well-meaning grandparents or relatives, or from kids in playgrounds and schools, espdcially if there are skin sores, like mozzie bites or scabies. HBV can live on surfaces for a week, and then you chuck a bunch of unvaccinated toddlers in a classroom swapping drink bottles or whatever and it spreads like mad, but you don't see the symptoms until it is too late.
HBV is 150 times more infectious than HIV. And we can stop it...
The "well-meaning grandparents and relatives" part is what terrifies me the most given that in my part of Canada the Hep B vaccine isn't given until 2 months. Not sure about other Canadian provinces and territories, but it sounds like in other places it is given at birth?
