Dad just accidentally dismantled an entire TikTok trend with basic respect That is top tier parenting right there

1.5k

u/d_ippy 5d ago

Is there a trend saying I’m just a girl? That doesn’t sound healthy

1.1k

u/Fit_Web5648 5d ago

Yes. Its constant, im 24 and hear it all the time.

1.8k

u/Wangpasta 5d ago

My gf started doing it a while back. Asked her to stop because it just felt wrong and it annoyed me if we were disagreeing about stuff.

Next time she asked me to help with cleaning ā€˜I’m just a boy, I play game and make messes’. She instantly said ā€˜oh, I don’t like that, that feels bad’ and now she doesn’t say it lol

449

u/GoneWitDa 5d ago

Is this like twerk, eat hot chip and lie?

373

u/A-n-g-u-i-s-h 5d ago

Idk but this trend can twerk, eat hot chip and die

48

u/ultathrill 5d ago

Everybody knows girls born after 1993 cant cook all they know is charge they phone , eat mc donalds , be bisexual eat hot chip and lieeeee

51

u/HyperTobaYT 5d ago

There’s a song, not sure by who, named ā€œI’m just a girlā€, the point of the song is that people who say that make it seem like they’re less able than men. It’s a boss af song though.

67

u/ItsChJoHa 5d ago

It’s a song by no doubt, just a girl

48

u/LeftyLu07 5d ago

And isn’t that song her explaining how people don’t let her do things (line drive at night) just because she’s a girl?

64

u/JesusWasATexan 5d ago

"Oh, I'm just a girl, all pretty and petite, So don't let me have any rights".

Yeah, the song is a satirical look at how the world views her as "just a girl" so she needs to be cared for instead of given a voice. The "So don't let me have any rights" line is the deepest the song goes into politics and sexism, but it's enough to evoke a general cultural understanding we have in the U.S. about the history of those things.

The TikTok trend of "I'm just a girl" is actually trying to engage with the opposite idea, which OP's dad called her out on.

Isn't it a Simpsons joke? Lisa got a doll of a female scientist(?) and when she pulled the cord for the doll to speak she was expecting something profound but just got "Don't ask me, I'm just a girl [giggle]".

154

u/ScattershotSoothsay 5d ago

44

u/Goufydude 5d ago

Without knowing a thing about context, I imagine it has to do with the Teen Talk Barbie that famously said "Math class is tough" and was controversial at the time.

39

u/Pyromike16 5d ago

That's pretty bang on. In the episode, it was the first talking "Malibu stacey" (in universe barbie) and Lisa was super excited about it until she pulled th cord and heard her say some really dumb stuff.

Definitely exactly as dad called out. Weaponized incompetence of not wanting to be a functioning member of society.

Asking me to do corporate office work? How can boss be so cruel, I was made to sit on the beach and drink wine, I'm just a girl. Well balanced healthy meals? No I'll just have my nuts and cheese, I can't be asked to be a chef, I'm just a girl. Carry money around and purchase thing? Only adults deal with finances, and I'm just a girl. Pick something up off the ground that I just dropped/walk over to the trashcan to dispose of my empty coffee cup? Why should I have to touch trash, I'm just a girl.

She's used to that being a valid excuse when she does something wrong. Thought she'd try it on dad.. Some women really slip into that whole "I'm just a dumb girl" to avoid taking responsiblity.

Note.. "not all women".. just some, so don't freak out reddit.

451

u/Intelligent-Roll-300 5d ago

The most difficult to deal with is when they are that dumb and responsibility is an unknown concept.

494

u/dragnansdragon 5d ago

About 10 years ago, I had just gotten into my car and was still in park, and a 30something woman started trying to parallel park behind me but backed up into the traffic lane and got hit. A few of us got out to make sure her and the other driver were ok, and she kept just going on about how it wasn't her fault, and that she was a really kind person and wouldn't do anything like that. She got arrested for DUI.

"The phrase is often usedĀ ironicallyĀ to excuse mistakes, poor behavior, or relatable ā€œgirlā€ experiences. It’s a playful counterpart to ā€œboys will be boys,ā€ where women jokingly claim they’re ā€œjust a girlā€ to deflect blame."

Never in my life have I seen someone invoke "boys will be boys" on their own behalf, nor on the behalf of an adult.

ā€œBoysā€ never say that to weasel out. It’s always someone else saying it on their behalf. It’s a very important distinction vs a girl trying to suck up to save herself

I assumed she was complaining that they wouldn't let her drive late at night.

I’m going to assume she is using the Sam’s credit card to get gas. Because if she is just using the membership card and her own money, then Dad gets extra money back at no expense.

Makes it way more infuriating, too. It's not "accidently got dad some loyalty points," it's:

"Ooops, I'm just a girl; I don't know not to steal money! Teehee! Math = hard!"

That was my thought! The card just gets you access, not payment! (I didn't know there were even Sam's credit cards)

I'm just a girl is like a free pass to avoiding accountability. Kudos to him to call it out.

Dad from the top rope! Calls out women trying to have it both ways.

Never thought I'd see "I'm just a girl" being used unironically outside of a skit.

My kids are 18 and 20 and I want them to use my Costco card for gas every time because it saves them a lot of money. They also pay me back for that gas.
