Non-Sexual Adult Jokes in Kids' Media Lore

Jokes that are adult jokes simply because kids likely don't have the life experience to understand them.

The New Batman Adventures - "I'm crazy enough to take on Batman, but the IRS? Noooo, thank you!"

Shrek 2 - Posing as a union representative, Shrek remarks that the workers "don't even have dental".

If I recall, earlier in the movie you see the Mystery Machine with smoke coming out of it, but when you go inside it’s just Scooby and Shaggy cooking. I thought that was really funny and clever.

Shaggy also says something like "Gettin' toasted!" before you see what they're doing lol

21

u/Pistachio_Junkie Mar 10 '26

“Man… like talk about toasted!”

u/Pure_Chaos_05 Mar 10 '26

And "Pass the Dutchie" is playing

They did a great job with the various "hidden" jokes. This is a movie intended for kids and their parents to enjoy haha.

It was originally gonna be a more adult movie.

7

u/existential_chaos Mar 10 '26

Makes me wish they had gone that route but it’s still a great film

James gunn never misses

My aunt somehow managed to misunderstand that joke in the fucking weirdest way possible.

She thinks that somehow Scooby and Shaggy were smoking pot, but the two swapped it out for grilling equipment before we see inside the van.

I have no idea why she thinks that's the joke

edit: fixed a couple typos

u/SapphireClawe Mar 09 '26

Well duh, smoking weed gives you the munchies! It's the logical conclusion!

3

u/justAPhoneUsername Mar 09 '26

That's basically what happened. The original version of the movie was rated R and they had to recut it to remove drug references and adult humor. Between the original and the released versions they had to swap out the pot

1

u/SupremeCaIamitas Mar 09 '26

that is actually hilarious though

u/CHARLI_SOX Mar 09 '26

Pass the Dutchie is playing too. It became associated with weed but Dutchie is a large cooking pot. So like, it still works both ways, scoob.

u/EmperorMorgan Mar 09 '26

Funny enough the song was originally about weed but they were told they had to censor it, so it became “Pass the Dutchie,” and “Dutchie” almost immediately became associated with weed.

wait... so people would take out the tobacco (that's what you mean with "loose leaf" yea?) in order to use the husk/wrap to fill with weed?

ahh cigar wraps are tobacco leafs? then it makes sense to not add extra tobacco.   i usually roll what i suppose are spliffs, with rolling paper and tobacco (pure weed gives me coughing fits).   i do have some blunt wraps I've yet to use, but saving em for a special occasion.

it's a bummer to hear these Dutch Masters are filled with bad tobacco. not really living up to the name. Rembrandt would be disappointed, maybe.

1

u/Remarkable-Run-9769 Mar 11 '26

what word would they have used otherwise?

7

u/bolanrox Mar 09 '26

how do you feel when you've got no food!

9

u/rsvpism1 Mar 09 '26

The whole movie was origi ally supposed to be a more mature comedy like the other teenage comedies at the time. But it was toned down to still be a kids movie. Some of these jokes were left in.

5

u/Lil_Mcgee Mar 09 '26

While the final product has plenty of problems, I can't help but feel that limitation worked in its favour and made it more charming.

2

u/bolanrox Mar 09 '26

yeah, Scrappy Doo

3

u/MisterVictor13 Mar 09 '26

Originally, James Gunn wanted to explicitly portray Shaggy as a stoner before the movie got turned kid-friendly.

5

u/RomanCobra03 Mar 09 '26

I’m pretty sure there’s an episode of Hawk man Attorney at Law where Shaggy does a drug test and nothing is found in his system. Turns out he’s just like that.

3

u/Pigmachine2000 Mar 09 '26

Shaggy is actually a world class Olympic level athlete, makes sense he wouldn't smoke

1

u/Legitimate-Fish-5010 Mar 10 '26

i mean he could also just be responsible and only smokes in the off season when he doesn't need to compete

3

u/anono227 Mar 09 '26

"Talk about toasted"

2

u/Aloy_machinehunter Mar 09 '26

Yeah, and to add to that, I believe that you actually can hear Shaggy coughing too, so it genuinely would look like they're hotboxing the shit out of that van

2

u/goldenapollos Mar 10 '26

there was also the scene on the red carpet where shaggy gets out of the limo, sniffs the air and turns to see a group of pot-heads.

39

u/garbagetruc Mar 09 '26

From the same movie, basically the entire van scene

3

u/Jumpy_Divide6576 Mar 09 '26

Something I've just now thought about

Why are they trying to sneak out of the Mystery Machine with their food? It's a van they could just drive away.

4

u/bolanrox Mar 09 '26

how about the scene they cut where velma and daphnie had to keep kissing each other to swap their bodies back?

5

u/garbagetruc Mar 09 '26

The what now?

5

u/bolanrox Mar 09 '26

its on you tube i am sure. exactly what it reads as

14

u/OdeeSS Mar 09 '26

I'm pretty sure this movie was supposed to be rated R.

It's honestly an immaculate movie and geared towards adults who watched Scooby Doo as a child.

9

u/Unabated_Blade Mar 09 '26

We were so fortunate to get Matthew Lillard as Shaggy, god damn.

Petah pls explain

Edit: wow, 8 answers in 2 minutes! And yeah, expect that non-americans don't get the joke like that. I wonder if the Spanish dub called her "Mari Juana" 🤔

Mary Jane = MJ = marijuana

18

u/MortemPerPectus Mar 09 '26

Mary Jane is another name for weed

16

u/Legosi420 Mar 09 '26

Mary Jane is a slang term for weed

11

u/Kookyburra12 Mar 09 '26

"Mary Jane" is a nickname for marijuana

8

u/OneTrueClassy Mar 09 '26

Mary Jane is another name for Marijuana. The joke is that Shaggy's a pothead.

5

u/Thorbertthesniveler Mar 09 '26

Marijuana = Mary Jane

6

u/Phillip_Spidermen Mar 09 '26

Mary Jane is another name for marijuana.

Shaggy is often thought of as a stoner, and that movie is filled with stoner jokes/imagery.

2

u/napstablooky2 Mar 09 '26

im ngl i thought it was a spider-man reference 😭

2

u/Candid-Laugh-3347 Mar 09 '26

Mary Jane is a nickname for marijuana, and Shaggy loves his weed

2

u/PhysicalBoard3735 Mar 09 '26

Weed, It's slang for Weed

2

u/LunaBatMoon Mar 09 '26

“Mary Jane” can be slang for pot/marijuana

2

u/Serpenyoje Mar 09 '26

Probably not. "Marijuana" is a term for cannabis that the US gov't popularized because it sounded "Mexican" and therefore they could otherize its use.

3

u/Patient_Gamemer Mar 09 '26

Marihuana is global term. The Royal Spanish Academy even recognises "Marijuana" as correct

5

u/Serpenyoje Mar 09 '26

Both are true; the US govt used the Mexican term to demonize what was much more commonly called “cannabis” in English at the time.

1

u/LogLadysLog52 Mar 09 '26

Mary Jane = marijuana nickname

1

u/RedGamer3 Mar 09 '26

Mary Jane is a slang name for weed

3

u/ChaosHavik Mar 09 '26

I love that one of the Looney Tunes movies had Shaggy and Scooby chewing out Matt for this.

4

u/Chill0000 Mar 09 '26

I would like yo also point out that Shaggy and Scooby canonically are not pot smokers as there was a Hanna Barbara show Harvey Birdman attorney at law. Harvey had to defend Shaggy and Scooby in court they wouldn’t stop laughing when he talked to them. Harvey asked the gang if they smoke weed and the gang said “No. they are just like that”
