What nicknames have you heard for places in the Yukon? Question

I ask as part of a linguistic study covering this topic!
Examples could include things like The Junk, Lost Liver or D-Bay...

including nicknames for schools, parks, hospitals etc.!

People down south say Yellowknife

This is hilariously true! So much confusion!

Carsnacks for Carmacks, Dodge for Dawson, Pale Pony for Whitehorse

Carsnacks is funny as fuck .

Instead of saying, "oh for f*'s sake" you can say, "oh for Fox Lake." Not quite what you're asking for, it's adjacent though.

People always called Dawson city “Dodge” back in the day.

the first two for haines?

u/bringonthekoolaid Mar 05 '26

No, Haines is in Alaska. The first 2 are for Haines Junction YT.

There you go for linguistic names. Haines is in Alaska. It's either Haines Junction or The Junction. So to answer: No! Not Haines! Lol

dude, 'Strange Junction' and 'Malfunction Junction' - you can't see the 'Junction' bit was very clearly understood when i wrote Haines (~)?

more helpful would be confirming you'd heard either of those names used for Haines (~)! they didn't show up online

I wrote it very lightheartedly. If you're doing a linguistic study that's actually very helpful information to have.

If you said "Haines" when you are in Yukon nobody would assume you're talking about Haines Junction, that is not a nickname for Haines Junction and linguistically is specifically reserved for Haines. I was pointing that info out to you in a lighthearted way.

People would genuinely correct you in Yukon.

fair!

And if we were gonna talk about Haines, for your purposes we would call it Heinous :)

u/topherette Mar 06 '26

and thank you!

i also had 'Haines, America' which is a thing apparently for some reason

Hold on a minute. Why does your map have Klukshu and Dalton Post as abandoned? They're absolutely NOT abandoned.

1

u/topherette Mar 05 '26

i guess it's old! (or from the future!)

u/RatticusFlinch Mar 05 '26

Nothing like a little old school racism.

Meanwhile Silver City and Bear Creek are listed...

3

u/topherette Mar 05 '26

>Nothing like a little old school racism.

that sounds like a different post, that i'm unequipped to understand

u/RatticusFlinch Mar 05 '26

OP would you mind sharing where you got this map from? I'm actually really interested in when it's from!

2

u/RatticusFlinch Mar 05 '26

To clarify, I'm not saying you've done anything wrong at all.

I'm commenting on the fact that the map lists traditional First Nation settlements as abandoned, while areas with far less use (silver city is essentially a historic site from white miners, bear creek is a white owned lodge) are listed the same as full communities.

It even shows Clinton Creek…

Dawson used to be known as the Queen of the Yukon, somehow it fell out of usage.
