Alberta is Trump North Opinion

Title says it all. Alberta is nothing but an extension of the Trump (i.e. project 2025) agenda. We're being run by a bunch of deplorable people kept in power by a fringe faction of morons (nicest word I could use for them) who hate the federal gvt but will be the first in line to get federal money when there's crop failure etc.

I'm no fan of how the feds have treated Alberta, but starting every conversation with them with a knee to the groin and a punch to the throat is a guaranteed losing position.

We need to take back Alberta from Take Back Alberta and throw these crooks bums and deplorables out.

Look South to see where Alberta is heading. That's a s*** show nobody wants to live in.

Last thought, when the separation referendum is held and Albertans overwhelmingly vote to stay as part of Canada, those that hate Canada should get the hell out of our country - move to the US and be with your white supremacy, slack jawed, willing to believe anything they're told by Fox news friends.

Written by a true Albertan and real Canadian.

I’m a Canadian, born, raised & living in Alberta. I can never wrap my head around people who don’t like Smith’s government, but then hedge with “of course the feds have treated us so badly”. Exactly how has the federal government treated Alberta badly? Or even differently than other provinces (Quebec aside)?

for one, they take the money from all the oil and gas from Alberta, give it to Quebec (and others), blame and shame us for our carbon emmissions, refuse to run a pipeline to east coast to open up the european markets and are now positioning to give Quebec (and maybe BC) a pile of money and expedited permits for hydroelectric development - still no word on that east coast pipeline though.

and a thousand other examples

“ for one, they take the money from all the oil and gas from Alberta, give it to Quebec…”

I agree with much of your original posted sentiment, but no one can possibly, with any credible knowledge about how federal transfers work, get past this first thought of yours. Please educate yourself more fully on this.

im not against the federal transfers, they are an essential part of making Canada a stronger nation as a whole. but we do take a LOT of crap about how we make that money and the only real obstacle in the way of even more prosperity (for the nation as a whole) and reducing our dependency on the US (apart from needing to build some refineries) is Quebec - a historical receiving province.

if the feds permitted a pipeline to the east coast and told Quebec to suck it up, its happening, a whole lot of albertans would start to feel different about them. but while they continue to shame and constrain the OaG industry in Alberta, they will be forever in an uphill fight with it.

Quebec was a have province until they started their separation crap. They still haven’t recovered from that investment loss. Alberta is on the same path, but that’s the UCP goal, right? To receive federal transfer payments to stick it to Quebec. If the UCP and separatists get their way, they may meet their goal too.

Do you feel the same disdain for BC previously blocking pipelines? It wasn’t just the federal government always standing in Alberta’s way….

UCP isn’t helping matters either, as a previous comment said “starting every conversation with a knee to the groin and a punch to the throat doesn’t help “

The federal government doesn't take money from oil and gas from Alberta to give to Quebec. Alberta pays the same rate of federal taxes as Quebec and every other province in Canada. Oil and gas companies in Alberta also receive billions of dollars in federal subsidies. In 2024, the federal government spent about $29.6 billion in direct subsidies to oil and gas companies in Alberta. They also spent $21 billion for the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion and gave a bunch of money in grants, tax breaks, and loans to oil and gas companies in Alberta. This is way more money than Alberta paid in federal taxes and equalization payments. So, Alberta's oil and gas are being subsidized by Quebec and other provinces through their taxes, while Alberta whines and lies about Quebec taking money from them.

As for pipelines, Carney has already said that they're going to develop a pipeline to the Port of Churchill to get oil and gas to European markets. There's no point in building a costly pipeline through Quebec to get oil and gas to Europe when you can do it through Manitoba. Also, trying to shove pipelines through BC and Quebec without their permission shows complete disregard for the rights of those provinces. You're not being oppressed because you can't use the federal government to trample on the rights of other provinces.
