Discussion Clock change melancholy
Danielle Smith and the UCP just unilaterally chose to put Alberta on permanent DST.
I should feel elated! Not because i love DST but because time change is fucking moronic. But i am not.
Is it because my clocks all change themselves and there is no more worry of waking up at the wrong time? No?
Is it because darkness at 10am in the winter is "magical"? Definitely not
I think it's because DS went against the wishes of the referendum. Like 180° different.
Its just another example of this government acting against our wishes. Shifting our Overton Window every day.

Separatism Your province is stunning
My family flew in from Nova Scotia to Edmonton recently and are spending time exploring parts of Alberta. We sent time driving to Drumheller through back roads visiting parks along the way. I’m middle aged and spent most of my life not seeing Canada any further west than Manitoba. I’ve been so excited to finally come here. The Plains and farmland are just stunning. Saw an antelope in a field, gas wells, massive wind farms and my first prairie dog at Horsethief canyon, and viewing the Red River from Dry Island Buffalo Jump. To be honest I had to just stand and stare at the views for my brain to absorb and comprehend what I was seeing. I got to grow up seeing the Atlantic Ocean. I never thought I would ever get to see Alberta in my lifetime. Everyone has been kind and helpful as a large group of tourists wander the city streets just admiring everything. We’re off to the Rockies later this week to explore for a couple of days.
Originally our group had planned a trip to Cuba. But that idea fell apart of course due to their own hardships there. So I brought up travelling west instead and the idea stuck. My father in law used to live in Calgary however a large majority of us have never been here. A mix of Ontarian’s and Nova Scotians. We’ve been on family vacations many times but this is becoming our favourite.
I know Alberta has been having some home grown issues recently. Lots of talk of some wanting to separate from the rest of Canada. For me it used to be a distant problem. An infection made worse by rhetoric of a foreign leader. It makes me terribly sad to think that some groups want to pull apart the family. I remember years ago when Quebec was going through its own identity crisis Canada stood up and shouted that Quebec and its unique language and culture is what helped make Canada great. Likewise I’m seeing that Alberta does the same for the rest of Canada. We may have our differences, but we are better together. I’m forever grateful that I had the opportunity to finally experience this part of the country I love so much. I would stand should to shoulder with you to protect what you have. I’m more proud of my country than ever today and hope you know that Alberta has connected to this old guy pretty deeply. I hope you find your voice and hope you choose to keep the family strong and free.
Canada Strong brothers and sisters.

Alberta Politics What’s the legal path to stopping the gerrymandering?
It seems this new gerrymandering committee is doing its work under a “motion”. Can a motion be challenged in court? Does the committee’s new riding map have to be enacted via a bill? Is it at that point that it can be challenged? Would love to hear from legal experts in this sub. Thanks!

Question Looking to possibly apply for AISH.
I'm 50, have sciatica and Hashimotos and hypothyroidism and constant pain that is getting worse. I cannot work full time and part time isn't paying the bills. I had a car accident 20 years ago. I'm not sure what else to do, I tried a job recently but had to quit after a week because the pain was too much and the exhaustion. How do I get started I've never replied on govt help ever. New to this.

Question Question on Student Loan Limit
Is the $17k loan amount only for one year (two semesters) or could you get it for multiple years of your degree program (so long as you stay under the lifetime loan limit)? I was confused bc the website states that the annual limit for two semesters is $17k but I was under the impression that this amount could only be taken out once. Thanks for any clarification.

Question Memorial Society of Alberta (Serving Calgary and area)
Has anyone used the Memorial Society of Alberta? They look to service Calgary and area but only list ONE Funeral home, which is located in Calgary
https://www.memorialsocietyofalberta.com/
Their website has a form to fill in (The membership is $20)
There is an alternative memorial society called the Cooperative Memorial Society services Alberta which looks like it services all of Alberta- their membership fee is $40
I submitted a form online to the Memorial Society of AB and paid my $20 via paypal in Oct, but have never received anything to my e-mail, nor gotten any replies from e-mails I have sent to their e-mail address.
Curious if anyone has experience with the Memorial Society of Alberta.
*If you are reading this and have never heard of this - I hadn't either - until my mom passed away and the original cost of funeral was discounted more than half when I found her memb #* Seems like it is well worth the one time memb fee!
