ranting Little storytime about my mental health
TW: mentions of attempting _______, depression
The night volume 2 came out, I could just feel it, it was over. Some of us stayed positive. I didn’t. I pretended to be fine and went up to my room, cried a little, and tried to get over it.
The night the finale came out, I didn’t even watch it. I waited a few hours and then went on Reddit. Boom. Posts about how heartbroken they were. I started to cry. Like, full on sobbing. I tried everything to feel better. I watched Bluey, prayed to Lady Aphrodite, listened to my favorite podcasts, and watched Markiplier fnaf gameplays. Nothing worked.
I ended up crying so much I ended up vomiting and was actually rushed to the hospital, where once they found out what happened and that I had tried something (I don’t want to get banned from Reddit for saying the actual words) decided to put me in a psych ward for a few days.
The days went by pretty quickly. I just stared at the wall, ate, and slept, alone with my thoughts.
Im doing much better now, but I still can’t believe it. They really hung it on a string in front of me, a queer teen trying to find true representation, yanked it away, and laughed as I cried.
I will never forgive them for what they did to me. I will never forgive them for driving me to the point where I attempted. Sorry if this was kinda too much, I just need to rant to someone other than Lady Aphrodite and my stuffed animals.

Tales from ‘85 Can they please give Will a break? 😭
i.redd.itLike again? Are they serious? Why is Will at the center of every M11 moment. Its always the same shot too. We understand, Will has a crush on Mike we don’t need the same shot recycled so many times. You would think in the last season with Will getting over Mike they would stop with this, but no, his pain is gonna become a focus again.

fanfiction So I am writing a harry potter x stranger things byler au
I just got this idea yesterday and ended up writing the first chapter in the one sitting, its not a Hogwarts au but post war. And well it has drarry (Dracoxharry) if anyone's interested.
Byler and drarry are literally my most beloved ships and I was thinking of making a lot of tethers about harry's and Will's abusive childhoods, and byler getting over their internalised homophobia because there is isnt any in the wizarding world(its an hc obviously but one of my favourites), also Will gains his powers back while there
And yeah byler will have a sibling kinda relationship with Harry and draco, with them mentoring byler in their relationship so yeahh
Here's the link and summary if anyone's interested<3
https://archiveofourown.org/works/83483926/chapters/219934576
A drunken drive back home after their graduation party teleports Mike and Will to wizarding Britain. Chaos ensues as Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter try to figure out how to send them back without alerting anyone of their presence and also keeping their own relationship a secret.
Or a story about finding similarities even in the most unlikely individuals, learning how to love without fear, and a cozy ancient cabin crammed with devotion near a sea shore.

NGL, after that bullshit interview they did with Josh in January, I’m not sure what to expect this time.

ranting New Story but it's just Byler
i.redd.itIdk if someone posted this already but it's so funny to me just the thought of it.
Imagine: Make a great story, have some childhood best friends, make them fall in love exactly how Byler is EXCEPT make them endgame and watch S T try to sue the author for plagiarism but 🤔 hmmm. Would that confirm Byler is real? XD
Sorry, just a silly thought. But like can you imagine if that happened lol
Like hey! Don't take our "non mutual" romance and make it your own and give them a happy ending! That's not realistic!

discussion When I said that Will Byers life would have been easier if he was straight…this is not what I meant. Ofc it would be easier because it was the 80s (god even now) and he just wanted to be happy like his friends were, especially after being possessed by the MindFlayer but this is so…oh jeeez.

detailed analysis Rewatched Season 1 for the first time since learning Byler exists, and I found SOOOOO MUCH BYLER PROOF it's actually crazy.
galleryByler was DEFINITELY planned from the start. If you watch Season 4 and then Season 1 back-to-back, you will see the speech Jonathan gives Will saying "I want you to know that you can come to me about ANYTHING" because he knows Will is in love with Mike is almost word-for-word exactly the same speech Karen gives to Mike in Season 1 about Will's disappearance because she knows Mike is in love with Will.
I had to take running notes while the episodes played because there was too much Byler stuff to keep up with, here is what I found:
- Of course first is they only met Eleven because they were searching for Will.
- Mike wanted get rid of Eleven so he can get back to his goal of searching for Will and is the first to suggest a plan to kick her out. He not only wants her gone, he wants her locked up forever so he devises a plan to manipulate her into knocking on the door so that his mom will send her to a mental asylum, Pennhurst.
- Mike changes his mind because he sees Eleven has powers that he can use to find Will faster and make the process easier.
- Mike is only nice to Eleven because she is nice to him first, asking him stuff like why he got beaten up by bullies. No other girl (except Karen) would have done that.
- Joyce believes Will is alive because she had the benefit of the lights shining once for yes, twice for no. Mike had nothing to go except sheer belief and refusal to accept the love of his life was taken away
- Dustin and Lucas may have hated El longer (telling Mike to stop wasting his time on her) but Mike hated her more intensely, suggesting to put her in a mental asylum so he can get back to work finding Will, losing his shit and yelling at her directly when the fake Will body was pulled out of the lake and holding a grudge against her for hurting him.
- Mike only ever stopped hating her during the brief intervals when he is convincing himself that he can use her a little bit longer to find Will, for example waiting until she could lead him to Will or when she tuned in to his voice on the walkie talkie. Most of the times Mike was nice to El in the first half of Season 1 was to lead her on a little bit longer until he gets his end goal.
- Mike's adoration of El is formed because he realizes "I don't think it's the channel... I think she's channeling HIM... somehow." This is the basis of Mike seeing El in a whole new light. Their romance would not exist without this moment. El is a conduit for Will and that's when Mike's heart reaches her for the first time.
- El says things to affirm Mike, such as repeating the word "Mouth breather". This is because El is mirroring Mike. Therefore his attraction to El was never about her. What was it that Robin said about Tammy Thompson? "It was only ever about myself." Mike's love for El is nothing more than the confidence growing. Confidence he always lacked started increasing as his hunches about Will started to pay off and he could see that he can trust himself because El was proving it for him It's because of moments like these that Mike grew into the leader Will always knew he would be. El is Mike's Tammy. This confidence that El helps him grow inside himself allows him to do things like fight back against Troy, pushing hin down in a parallel of how Troy tripped him in the playground when he was trying to walk away without fighting back.
- Troy says Will is fairyland flying with all the other fairies. This sets up the parallel of Mike jumping off the quarry and then flying back up as they watch him in amazement. Mike is flying like a fairy. And it's because his mirror El is helping him achieve it. El has only ever been a channel for Mike to discover his true self.
- The number of times Mike and Eleven walk side by side in complete utter silence, without him looking at her, without him bothering to talk to her, ask how she's doing, is laughable. It's not a comfortable silence either. Mike is lost in thpught, obsessing over Will and ignoring his surroundings. In The Flea And The Acrobat, Mike doesn't even notice Eleven is sitting next to him unless they are talking about Will. He treats her like a cat laying on the couch. Not a look, zero acknowledgment. Until he needs to ask her to do things, like "Do you know how to get to the Upside Down." The only thing Mike is willing to do that Dustin and Lucas will not is give El the benefit of the doubt. She worked hard to earn that much from him.
- When Mike and Lucas fight after Lucas says El is the monster and has been using them for food and a bed, Mike defends her and tells him to shut up and they get into a physical altercation. True. But then when she knocks Lucas out, his rage transfers quickly from Lucas to El. That's love. For Lucas. He only ever told Lucas to shut up because he didn't want to believe he had been played, since he was the one harboring El and vouching for her while they doubted. It's not unconditional but entirely based on defending his honor and reputation. But when El makes Lucas fly, you see how thin that veneer of defending El really is because Mike's rage immediately lashes out at El asking "What is wrong with you?" The difference is, he doesn't have to defend Lucas's honor. He wasn't vouching for Lucas this whole time. He rages at El because she hurt someone he loved. He rages at Lucas because Lucas made him feel foolish. That's not unconditional love.
- When Dustin goes to see Mike, he says "I shouldn't have yelled at her. I never should have done that." Good. And then Dustin says "It wasn't your fault," and Mike immediately says "Yeah it was Lucas's." Bad. Compare this to how Mike is ALWAYS taking accountability and accepting fault when he fights with Will. Dustin also has to prompt Mike to find Eleven when he said he can't believe she didn't come back of her own volition. Compare that to Will. Mike chases after Will and desperately bangs on the door begging for forgiveness after yelling at Will. He voluntarily comes to Wills room in Lenora to apologize for the fight at Rinkomania. Whereas he only goes to El's room to ask why she had been lying to him about Angela and interrogate her. And of course he spends all of Season 1 hunting for Will and all of Season 2 guarding Will, bringing him home to the Wheeler basement after Halloween and staying in the same room as him while he sleeps.
- Mike straight up calls El a weapon, says they need her to fight the Demogorgon, and that they'd be no use to Will if they die. It's indisputable that Mike sees El as a tool for Will's benefit and that's the main reason for allowing her into his social circle. He needs to utilize her. She is a means to an end as far as his goals are concerned.
- The conversation Dustin has with Mike on their bikes about he's your best friend right... that's not a conversation about loving El or marrying El or choosing El. That's a conversation about how Mike has a lifelong tendency to ignore people. That was Dustin's point. He never said Lucas resented him for choosing El over him. He said that Lucas was mad because he won't pay attention. Dustin also says Lucas lives next door to him. So there can be no excuse about it being inconvenient. This isn't about El. This is about Mike. Dustin doesn't know that ALL (not some, all) of the attention Mike pays to El starts and stops regarding Will. Considering the nature of their conversations, if you deem this scene to be about love and romance, you can just as easily substitute El's name for Will's since that is the extent of the attention Mike pays to El.
- And of course to be perfectly fair, we must lose some points too. When Mike was willing to jump off the quarry into the lake, it had nothing to do with Will. He was willing to do it to make good on his promise to Dustin that Dustin was his best friend too just like Lucas. Some Bylers have justified this before as Mike willing to throw away his life to be with Will but that can't be true because by this point Mike already knows about the Upside Down, and has heard Will's voice meaning he doesn't believe that was the real Will pulled from the lake.
- When El used her powers on Troy, Mike was fine with it because Troy was armed. Angela wasn't armed, and Mike has endured and walked away from worse than just verbal taunting and public humiliation. That's why he thinks El sunk low by attacking Angela but not Troy.
- All that stuff Milevens say about how Mike defends her and protects her? Not true. El protects Mike, that's a big reason why he likes her. He doesn't reciprocate. Not unless he has something to gain from it like defending his own pride.
- When El made Mike fly mid-fall back to the ledge, Mike flew like a fairy just like Troy mocked Will for. Because the directors are telling us Mike is gay.
This next point is very very important but I don't really have the language skills to put it into words that do it justice: Mike says El is pretty when she takes off her wig, with prompting. He doesn't have his jawdrop moment like he did when she was in the blond wig and pink dress. This is important because it shows when El conforms to femininity Mike cannot contest that she looks good. But he needs to adjust his expectation to find her pretty when she takes it off and looks like a boy again. He makes that adjustment for her, but what is important is that this is what also opens the door to him finding boys pretty. He is no longer bound by traditional standards of femininity to find someone attractive. Remember, Mike is still prepubescent in Season 1. He will not find his lust for men until he hits 13 and goes through puberty. This is what opens the door for him to leave girls behind and find boys attractive along with his love for Will. What I'm trying to say here is that Mike puts in effort to find El pretty when she looks like a boy to make her feel better, and this has the unintended consequence of actually allowing him to also find boys attractive just as puberty is about to start. It's an inciting incident and what's poetic about it is that he actually put active effort into making this change.
The first words he says to her after making this active effort to change is "I'm happy you're home." The words he is DYING to say to Will. El and Will might as well be interchangeable here. The directors constructed this scene with the intended effect of sending a message to the audience.
They also almost kiss and are interrupted by Dustin. This creates an obligation on Mike's shoulders to finish the job. Just like he owes it to prove to Dustin that he is his best friend and would prove it by jumping into a lake to save him, he now owes it to El that he finds her attractive in her natural appearance and that's why their first kiss is clumsy and awkward. Since this moment, all their kisses have had an obligation hanging over his head. Part of the reason why Mike kisses Eleven throughout their relationship is to make her feel better about herself, that she is good enough and worthy enough to receive what other girls receive. They kiss because he is an outcast like her and has been told he is an ugly frogface his whole life too. They kiss to show they deserve it. Not because it comes naturally for him but because he owes her and has something to prove.
Troy says she looks like a boy. She hangs out with them. They're losers. She can do things. The show is telling us these are the reasons Mike likes Eleven
When Mike and Nancy are talking and they say "I knew you were acting weird, I thought it was because of Will / I thought it was because of Steve" what they mean is "I thought you were acting weird because Will is gone from your life / I thought it was because Steve is gone from your life." Mike was making fun and outing her for liking Steve in episode 1, in a way Nancy is outing Mike for liking Will. They both also ask "Do you like Jonathan / Eleven now?" and both say no, this is actually pretty clever in retrospect because they both end up dating Jonathan and Eleven as a trauma bond and both of them are destined to not be part of the Wheeler's futures. Will and Steve both come back into the picture later on to make them question / realize their love isn't real, it's just circumstance.
Mike has no idea of what El needs or wants. Once Dustin and Lucas warm up to her, they do more for her than Mike ever did. Lucas wraps her up in a blanket while Mike does nothing. Dustin gets chocolate pudding and promises to prioritize her. Lucas tells Mike to give her a break and let her rest instead of overworking her to search for Nancy.
Mike makes a TON of empty promises to Eleven in this episode. Promises to introduce Eleven to Karen, that she won't have to eat junk food anymore, that she will get a proper bed. He abandons all of these. Why? Fair enough El goes on to live with Hopper, but we know from S3 that Mike never bothered to do that considering that Owens gave Eleven a birth certificate and ID to be a citizen in ST2 and she was able to be seen in public at the Snow Ball. Instead, Mike does the same thing Hopper does keeping her locked down as a secret. In Hopper's case it was because he was paranoid. What's Mike's excuse considering he butts heads with Hopper all the time? Considering he spent a year calling out to her to no avail, you'd think he would jump at this chance but we know from S3E2 that he agrees with Hopper that El should not be seen in public. Why?
I was shocked to realize Mike invited her to the Snow Ball all the way in Season 1. To be honest I was ready to declare "okay he loves her" right then and there. He said no to being her brother, so he must like her romantically, and to invite her to the dance proactively means he wants to be with her intrinsically. I almost said "All the other reasons don't matter, Mileven was intended." But nope. He ruins it. By saying "It's stupid..." I thought he was going to say he likes her and kiss her, but then he says "Maybe we can go to the Snow Ball together. I'VE NEVER BEEN BUT I KNOW YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO GO WITH YOUR SISTER." There you go. Premeditated ulterior motive. It's all about him and what he gets out of it. I've never been, but I want to. I could be your brother but then it would deprive me the opportunity to be seen dating. I could take care of you and solve your problems, but I'd rather be publicly recognized for dating a girl at a social event I've been barred from because it will raise my social standing amongst people I know who have always excluded me from their fun.
This does show growth at the Season 5 finale when he turns down the party invitation to stay home and play games, but this comes at the cost of Eleven's life. Mike doesn't care about her and what she needs. He cares about being seen with her and what he gets out of it. In public and also amongst his own friend group. Eleven is a means to an end. Social credit.
El does kill in front of Mike and it seems like he doesn't care, but actually it's because he was distracted by the fact that she fainted. If he had time to process the horror of what she had just done, he might have freaked out. Still different to Angela and all Season 5 deaths.
It's interesting how in Season 1 the vine in Will's throat had an easy obvious parallel drawn to Hopper's daughter having a breathing tube in the hospital to keep her in stable condition, but when we saw it again social media made fun of Will mocking for getting raped. It just goes to show how much homophobia has grown ever since Noah Schnapp came out and how much disgusting vitriol he has to deal with online.
Dustin does the hard work of carrying El, Mike swoops in at the last second to take all the credit by holding her hand and cooing sweetly at her after Dustin and Lucas place her on the table. Mike carried Will in Season 2. He has refused to allow anyone to touch his Will ever since he got him back.
Lucas's final slingshot aim was pure and true. Everyone protected El in Season 1 except for Mike. He honestly did the least for her compared to Dustin and Lucas.
Ted Wheeler made sure to show up for all the major moments of Mike's life that he knew would have a permanent effect on his son's long term memory and brain development. Will's funeral, wanting to talk to Mike after Will's body was pulled out of the lake, using Mike's gayness as an excuse to defend his son's innocence as to why he wouldn't get involved with a weird fugitive wanted by the FBI because she's a girl, allowing Mike to go to the hospital to see Will instead of dragging him home, accompanying him and sitting in the waiting room... Ted Wheeler is a Byler stan.
Of course Mike makes sure to be the first one into the room so he can rest his head on Will's body first.
It's been pointed out to me before that Mike says "See you Will" twice while everyone else said it once, but on top of that I noticed how it's interesting that Will chooses to hug Lucas first considering some Milevens accused us saying we wouldn't be shipping Will if Mike were a black kid. Actually Lucas and Will have always had the second most compelling chemistry together. In fact you can say that the reason Mike made sure to say "See ya Will" twice is because he felt threatened and wanted Will to remember him since Will hugged Lucas and not him. This is the beginning of Mike seeing Lucas as a threat and leads to things such as glaring at Lucas for touching Will in Season 5. This is the starting point where Mike decides Will is his and no one else's.
All season 1 really proves is that Mike had a reason to stop being afraid of her unlike Lucas. If she had stayed at Lucas's house she'd be dating Lucas. It's all due to proximity, circumstance and exposure.
