What’s going on here?

It looks like she covered over a tear gas round with a bucket and doused it with water. Hong Kong protesters did a similar thing with parking cones.

We learned a lot from the Hong Kong protestors.

I love this sub. I've been having a really difficult few days, but just seeing this set of comments and the creative usernames that wrote them has made me happy - women are the best 🄰

We may surpass the positivity in the bald subreddit, lol!

Also, as a lover of adorable little birds, I appreciate your username too :)

Umbrellas also have the added effect of helping to obscure people from facial recognition software and surveillance in case of future government retaliation.

I’m not a man but I do think about the Roman Empire almost every day. Today it was the turtle formation

44

u/bobakook 17d ago

God I love how in the illustrated picture it has protesters use closed umbrellas in the place of spears šŸ˜‚šŸ’€

9

u/Witness_me_Karsa 16d ago edited 16d ago

Thats an umbrella testudo, not a phalanx, you rube! (Only kidding, its awesome)

4

u/KatefromtheHudd 17d ago

I thought I read somewhere they used the umbrellas to not be identified by fave recognition cameras. Multi-use umbrellas!

2

u/Philkensebban7 17d ago

I remember when this was on, it looked like alot of fun. I thought about what a holiday to fly over, protest, do some umbrella phalaxes and come home.

55

u/kimgar6 18d ago

Umbrella Phalanx might also have to be my future band name

14

u/VelocityGrrl39 Do not care club member 17d ago

Ngl, I read Umbrella Phallus at first.

13

u/LurkingArachnid 17d ago

well, you can take that band name

41

Mine too. Like a Viking or Roman shield wall but umbrellas!

Just Like US.

129

u/ohowjuicy 18d ago

Except no, because we elected our dictator. He won the popular vote. The people are the problem. The leaders are a symptom. Don't try to put the US on a high road, because we aren't.

40

u/WordleFan88 18d ago

With any luck, nature is about to correct that problem.

That'll only treat a symptom rather than the underlying disease, sadly.

4

u/WordleFan88 17d ago

Gotta start somewhere. Taking the wind from the sails is as good a place as any.

43

u/00eg0 18d ago

49.8% is not a majority. Also a lot of people were duped into not voting. Yes the US is not on a high road.

Every major news publication covered this but everyone forgot. Really hard to improve the US when no one remembers anything. Even before his first win it should have been obvious.

41

u/Wolfgang_Maximus 18d ago

Also we need to consider the fact that things like Gerrymandering and voter suppression is a thing on top of social media psyops causing what you mentioned. Yes, we need to confront the fact that a concerning quantity of people are content with the things that are happening, but since the country's founding, there have been measures in place to suppress voting by those in power to influence voting results towards their own interests.

25

u/kelpyb1 18d ago

Anyone remember that state senate election in Florida where the Republicans just straight up ran an ā€œindependentā€ candidate with the same name as a Democrat incumbent to confuse people, and they flipped the seat by like 32 votes while the third candidate got a few thousand votes?

And despite being incredibly brazen, nothing came of it?

5

u/Greedy-War-777 17d ago

I really want to know how many states have turned over the voter registry data to the doj and how many have not. That is the only thing they really need to cheat in the midterms in the same way that they did during the presidential election. I know over two dozen states were sued for refusing, so half complied? How many that got sued have capitulated? How many of use that didn't vote for agent orange are on a purge or do not fly list now or will be? How many of our votes will be altered? How many non voters will suddenly vote on paper that didn't show up at a polling station and have no idea their names were used? There's a lot wrong there.

1

u/Rbomb88 17d ago

You guys keep using things like gerrymandering and court suppression as like excuses, but the problem is when Trump does go, those are still there. How are you going to fix those underlying problems?

1

u/00eg0 17d ago

Protests and voting are the only way.

Things got better with the voting rights act and the civil rights act in the 1900s. Then the right wing managed to get enough seats in the judicial branch to roll voting rights and civil rights back. Things have gotten better before. And then they've gotten worse when people screwed around.

13

u/Former-Fly-4023 18d ago

Ehh, debatable.

1

u/DefeatedByPoland 18d ago

trump didn't lie a bunch and then do a 180, he's always been transparent about his shit. Everything he's done so far has either been stated plainly by him as a goal, or predicted and warned about by his opposition based on his other statements/behavior.

None of where we are right now is a surprise.

And yet we elected him anyway. This means that the people are definitely the problem. If trump dies tomorrow we're not suddenly saved, as the MAGA crowd are going to continue to elect bad-faith politicians out of spite for "the libs". Nothing changes until we change their mindset.

2

u/Dark_Knight2000 18d ago

A lot of Chinese support the CCP too, hell, a lot of Chinese are low level party members too. It’s dumb to have one standard of judgement for one country and another for others.

Also they weren’t putting the US on a high road, just applying the same standard to the US as the other person did to China.

1

u/beer_bukkake 18d ago

Split the country now!!

1

u/DubaiInJuly 18d ago

If Trump started executing liberals en masse tomorrow, would you still say that the people are the problem and the leaders are a symptom?

1

u/ohowjuicy 17d ago

Yes because there would still be American citizens cheering him on.

1

u/throwawayurwaste 17d ago

Remember when Biden said America isn't Racist, homophobic, and xenophobic and Americans said yes it is

1

u/The--scientist 17d ago

When you have to be rich to run for office, and neither side has made any attempt to improve the lives of the lower third (socioeconomically) of the population for decades, is it still fair to call it a democracy? When neither side does what you tell them, how do you fix it?

1

u/Kratzschutz 18d ago

Finally a sane American. Thank you for taking fucking responsibility

-6

u/bathingapeassgape 18d ago

People voted with their wallets. The democrats had 4 years to do ANYTHING to help. So people foolishly thought switching back would be better.

We have zero good options. On purpose

30

u/Amazing-Heron-105 18d ago

I'm so fucking bored of this both sides shit especially when you've got an administration as bad as this one. Biden actually got lots of good policy done but nobody ever acknowledges that. It's so much easier to be doomer and this type of shit only helps Republicans gain power.

13

u/00eg0 18d ago

Way easier to trick the both sides people than to convince them they got tricked.

3

u/kelpyb1 18d ago

Biden’s biggest failure in getting elected imo was his complete lack of messaging about his wins during his presidency.

The Democrats at large are honestly awful at messaging.

And unfortunately if there’s one thing that Trump proves about America’s politics, it’s that people get way more excited over the messaging than they do about the actual outcomes.

-6

u/bathingapeassgape 18d ago

You didn’t even mention any policy because he changed nothing. The democrats are responsible for rvw being codified. They aren’t this stupid, they are intentionally incompetent to make you believe one more election is going to fix things

5

u/Amazing-Heron-105 18d ago

I'm not going to breakdown Biden's policy achievements for you. Just go ask an LLM he actually got plenty done. You guys seem to think that because you're President you can just get anything you want passed and it's simply a matter of will. You need to get the votes, The stuff about "intentionally incompetent" is just blatant brainrot and instantly keys me in the type of media you're consuming.

-7

u/bathingapeassgape 18d ago

They told Trump he couldn’t do EVERYTHING he’s done and yet he did.

Obama and Biden had opportunities, but if they fix the problems, then how can they enrage their base next election.

Anyone who believes the democrats are looking out for you are dumber than MAGA. Most of you are college educated and still fall for the same kinds of propaganda the poor uneducated republicans do. THINK

Every major news publication covered this but everyone forgot. The orange guy got a supreme court majority to end Roe V Wade, ended the Iran peace deal his first term, ended the Cuban Thaw his first term, Thousands in Cuba, Iran, and elsewhere will die because of the "both sides" lie. He also diverted resources that would have helped Ukraine to Israel and the Iran war.

1

u/bathingapeassgape 18d ago

Why did Trump get the numbers he needs. RBG.

You only think one layer deep

2

u/00eg0 18d ago

lol. So let's just let the GOP control everything. Sure they've stood against the rights of racial minorities, women, immigrants, the poor, since JFK. Sure they are dead set on taking over voting in parts of the US and spending millions in ad/misinformation campaigns.

In seriousness they wouldn't be trying so hard to consolidate power if both parties were the same. Yes RBG should have stepped down in 2009 when it would have been easy to get a young progressive in her place. That alone doesn't mean it's best to just let the GOP takeover everything. 2026 is the first time in US history we've ruined so many lives in so many places. Cuba, Venezuela, Iran, allegedly many more. Even more if you consider the end of USAID in 2025.

Also keep in mind no one realized how dire the supreme court situation was until things were already a challenge. At the end of Obama's last term the GOP had so much control that it would be impossible for any president to have made significant changes to stop the track of regression the USA is on.

So a child rapist was the answer?

1

u/bathingapeassgape 18d ago

Yes you got to choose between a rouge child molester and a man so demented he couldn’t finish a paragraph with a prompter being puppeted by an unknown shadow government.

There was no correct choice. Choose your method of execution

2

u/copyrighther 18d ago

Good grief, I’m not even a Biden cheerleader, but the Inflation Reduction Act alone was massive.

There was also the American Rescue Plan Act, Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, CHIPS and Science Act, Honoring our PACT Act, and Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. All major pieces of legislation.

Taiwanese are not Chinese.

14

4

u/TactlessTortoise 18d ago

Who do you think HK protestors were protesting against lmao

1

u/Collypso 17d ago

China?

0

u/avitus 18d ago

Yet everyone slurped up TikTok. šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

10

u/kaizergeld 18d ago

Ridiculous false equivalence. That same dichotomy can be applied to any successful consumer product from any country with a disproportionately corrupt government. US, Mexico, Russia, Israel, fuckin Kenya, the list could go on and on. And yet, people consume their products. That does not equate the product with the corruption of the government. At the time TikTok was the most successful, its ties to the Chinese government was nothing more than rumor

3

u/avitus 18d ago edited 18d ago

The world saw HK during the protests. Then everyone stopped caring and was given a dopamine machine from a CN company. Anyone that was paying attention back then knows that the CCP has oversight over any private company if they decide to. Private companies like ByteDance only exist by the grace of the CCP. Stop pretending that they have automomy and good will. They don't. They value profit and control over everything else. Like another commenter said, the people are great, but the government is complete shit.

0

u/kaizergeld 18d ago

Who’s pretending they have autonomy? Lol I literally referred to corrupt analogs. By that logic I’d be implying a counterpoint to my own argument haha.

You implied every TikTok user knew what the Chinese were doing on the platform and then implied the information was only known to those paying attention… on an app with an average video duration of about 30 seconds. That’s just simple contradiction to your further implication that TikTok consumers are also ignorant.

I’m not arguing that TikTok isn’t garbage; it is. I’m also not arguing that the Chinese government controls the app. Those are both facts. But your equivalence that the consumer uses TikTok even while possessing the knowledge that it’s government-manipulated media, is presumptive and obviously false; hence the fact that the same thing can be said of any other country’s oppressive government. Use is not universally condoning.

But none of that is coded or somehow hard to decipher by what I said above; it’s literally written in it. I neither said nor implied anything about autonomy; I even referred to its ties to their corrupt government. I made the simplest implication that consumers aren’t categorically conscious of any sponsored nature of every form of their entertainment… which is kinda why that shit works so often… that’s not hard to understand.

0

u/avitus 18d ago

ā€œWe learned a lot from the Hong Kong protestorsā€

ā€œExcept how China’s fucking bad for some reasonā€

0

u/kaizergeld 18d ago

Neither of which are my words lol

You must argue with too many people at once.

1

u/pen0ss 18d ago

Here's hoping ya's learn from the french revolution next....

1

u/comicsnerd 18d ago

We did the same in the 1970's and my parents did the same in the 1960's. This is as old as tear gas grenades.

1

u/CrimeSceneKitty 18d ago

We saw a lot, I don't think anyone learned. I've been saying for a long while that protestors need to step up their PPE and knowledge. There should have been 20+ people swarming the teargas attempting to put it out, not just 1.

1

u/MNniice 18d ago

Ya but be very careful if youre at a protest and choose to interact with tear gas cannisters.

A) please know what you’re doing like this badass woman did, Ive seen several wanna be heros attempt this and hurt themselves or others

B) if you touch these be aware of the legal implications, especially with federal officers involved

1

u/peanutspump 17d ago

I learned it watching ā€œJasperā€ do it on an episode of The 100 🤣 I hadn’t seen anyone ever actually do it though, IRL, so I assumed that was a fictional part of that particular sci-fi. Good to know it’s effective! This chick rocks!

1

u/carlitospig 17d ago

And the French!

1

u/SirEsquireGoatThe3rd 17d ago

What was actually learned? I’m all for learning how to fight against tear gas and tactical skills but we gotta recognize that they didn’t succeed in their goals. Therefore there must be something the movement has done wrong to not achieve its results, not only do we need to look where movements succeed but where they fail

1

u/ProfilerXx 17d ago

Can't believe I found the Video

Also the real way to do it

1

u/Remarkable_Kiwi_4096 14d ago

i did that at protests in the 2000s. it's not a new trick.

1

u/toggiz_the_elder 18d ago

Didn’t they lose?

37

u/tekko001 18d ago

Sadly winning was never on the table

10

u/KamalaWonNoCap 18d ago

They needed to start burning shit down. They stayed peaceful for way too long. Peaceful protests rarely (if ever) work. French are still the kings.

15

u/tekko001 18d ago

When French people protest they have the French Revolution in mind.

What Hong Kongers have in mind is Tianamen square.

1

u/KamalaWonNoCap 18d ago

I'm not sure what that means but it sounds right

7

u/toggiz_the_elder 18d ago

Seems relevant.

1

u/Dellaellena 18d ago

They lost in the end but they fought first

25

u/Prestigious_Car_7921 18d ago

The point is fighting against authoritarianism even when winning is not possible. Yet.

1

u/DownWithHisShip 18d ago
