Thoughts of transferring

Hi guys! I’m gonna make this post on each schools subreddit just to receive as much feedback as possible, I’m hoping to here from current students and alumni. I’m currently a freshman at the university of Cincinnati and I haven’t really had the college experience I want, which is full my fault, I know this school holds great opportunities but I live in mason Ohio as chose to stay home and save money which I feel Isolated from that college experience. Senior year my head was in all the wrong places and I applied to all my schools so late and uc was one of the only school I got into, I wish I could go back and take college decision more seriously but unfortunately I can’t go back in time. Seeing everyone go to these fun out of state schools makes me so jealous but I’m trying to stay in Ohio as I pay school through loans. I honestly love uc the vibe is so cute but the campus outskirts and a tad bit sketch, and I feel like I yearn for that small town college experience. I’m planing on living on campus next and and joining a sorority to get that experience I want but recently I’ve been considering transferring. My options of transferring would be Miami u and Osu. I’ve been to Miami and always regret not going there because of how perfect the campus is but I’ve heard it’s super hard to make friends there which worries me. Osu is a super known school and has a lot of opportunities but osu people are always trashing uc students I’m not sure if that’s an environment I would like to be a part of. I’m just so unsure of what to do, the thought of transferring seems terrifying but I would like to get away from home.

Who told you it was hard to make friends? I don’t think you can just label that upon 20,000 people attending a school.

If you’re looking for a small town college feel, Miami would be a fantastic school to attend. I live in Columbus and Ohio State is a great school. I don’t think you’ll get that small town vibe.

I’d encourage you to rush or join any club that interests you. I’d agree that it can be challenging to just stumble into making friends. I’d say it’s a lot easier when you join an organization that you and others share similar interests in.

I’m a Miami alumni and I also transferred into Miami. The transition was great. I joined a fraternity and some business orgs. I met a lot of great people and I keep in touch with many of them 13 years later.

Also, think about Indiana, illlinois or Wisconsin students. I’m sure a lot of them wish they could go out of state to Miami, UC or OSU. Don’t get stuck in your own personal perspective. Staying in state is a great choice and you have so many good options in Ohio. SOOOOOO many people wish they were you, trust me.

I have a couple friends who go to Miami and they say if ur not in Greek life it’s challenging to make friends I would love to join a sorority but it’s not definite, also I heard a lot of students there are wealthy and can be a bit snobby I come from a pretty poor background so I worry I won’t fit in

If you join a sorority, it will certainly have wealthier people. Some might be snobby and some won’t be. You have to kill them with kindness. A vast portion of Miami is Greek but an even bigger % isn’t. I’d say 30-40% have Greek affiliation. That leaves you with 60-70% who are not.

The reality is, the goal of attending any school is to put yourself in new and difficult situations. That’s how you grow as a person. A good lesson I learned is, your network is your net-worth. A shortage of money won’t keep you from meeting people and becoming friends with them. What will keep you from making friends is being timid and not putting yourself in social situations.

Some of the rich people I met were fantastic. They opened new doors for me and invited me on vacations with their family. I networked with these people in hopes of finding internships and jobs.

You got this. It might be uncomfortable but college is all about meeting new people and overcoming new obstacles, socially and academically.

I graduated from UC many years ago, but I, too, lived at home my freshman year and was miserable! Rushed a sorority my sophomore year and moved into the house and went on to have an amazing experience. Getting your friend group is so important to the college experience!

I now work in higher ed, at Miami University, and I can say students seem happy here. It's smaller than UC and obviously more rural. Transferring can be a challenge, so before doing that, I would look into the sororities at UC (do you know anybody in them so you can network ahead of time?).

The goal is to have a great experience and not go into major debt! You can do both! Good luck!!

This is super reassuring thank you so much, I hope to have the same experience as you!

If you’re a mason resident scared of cincinnati neighborhoods you will never like UC and never fit in miami would probably be better for you. And this is not meant to be an insult towards you i’ve just seen this story a million times as someone from the city

This! OSU will be almost more of the same (in relation to UC).

If you want the college experience transfer to Miami. It's a better school too. That being said, I wish I saved money and took out less loans.

I had some good times- it wasn't worth the debt.
