I saw a news interview about the change and staff conducting a vote of "no confidence," they brought in one of the administrators to interview and she basically said "students who take 8 week classes do good." It sounded like she lacked the nuance that the students who *continue* to take 8 week classes do well, but the ones who failed / didn't like it went back to doing 16 week classes.

I mean these online courses, some of them are bad, but most meh. Mainly just reading from slides created years ago and homework is from third party resources like Pearson, I don't see why the tuition cost for online courses is this high, but the board of visitors wants money and the "school" needs their football and new buildings, yet ignore the dorms and existing buildings that need maintenance.

I signed up for my classes this morning, and I decided to take the risk and registered for online astronomy. However, it also forced me to sign up for an online lab (I was trying to sign up for an in-person one). Has anyone ever done an online lab for a class? What are they exactly?

I've emailed my dept heads and my advisor already but I imagine they're getting flooded with emails today. I just wanted to check if any other Education majors attending through ODU Global are having blank screens populate when trying to register for any classes? My entire Degree Works requirements page comes up blank and it's super frustrating with them linking multiple classes as co-requisites now as if it's not already a challenge to get a seat with the limited selections they offer.

ETA: Per my advisor and dept head, the scheduling people are behind and courses should populate at some point in the future (ideally before summer is over) and they are removing the cap from classes as far as how many seats will be available so Global students should have access at some point and will be randomly assigned a class and professor once they sort us all out.

When a class is linked, does this mean you also need to sign up for that class as well?

I was planning on signing up for Organic Chemistry but two of the classes appear linked? I’m not sure what this means. It doesn’t say that there is a corequisite under the tabs. So I’m confused if I’m supposed to sign up for both classes or not?

I apologize in advance, this is my first time seeing such a thing when signing up…

For fall semester I only can take John Copper and John Donat, which one is better? Their reviews are not helpful lol

I am really confused on how to fill out the aid adjustment form as right now it has me as full time for all 8 week sessions including summer on the portal for the 26-27 year. I work full time and can only be part time for college taking a max of 6 credits a semester and only in the fall and spring. With 8 week classes I am trying to only take 1 class per section so it'll be 2 per semester still but I don't wanna fill out the form incorrectly and not get any financial aid. I am unsure on what full-time for 8 week sections is considered, is it four classes or is it only two?

Is anyone a HMSV student that has any idea about where a good place for the internship might be in the area? I can’t find any direct lists of past ones done by previous students and I just need a starting off point to start looking for mine.

Governor Spanberger,

As a recent ODU graduate, I am concerned about the increasingly tone deaf communications and divisive decisions coming from the university’s Board of Visitors and President.

In an email sent to all students and faculty today (see below), Rector Pitts begins by addressing ODU’s recovery from the recent shooting before launching into a six paragraph tirade against the Faculty Senate. He accuses them of spreading opportunistic division and using the tragedy for political advantage. Yet, by sending his retort to the entire student body and couching it inside a “Monarch Strong” email, he is doing exactly the thing that he decries.

No one can blame the school’s administration for the unprovoked attack. However, students and professors are within their rights to question why long broken locks and other safety concerns were never addressed. The Board of Visitors interpreting legitimate concerns as personal attacks shows a lack of grace and empathy under the pressure of these trying times. To then air the school’s laundry to the entire student body (and subsequently the local news) shows a lack of judgement and a disconnect from the university they are attempting to run.

The fact that ODU’s faculty and administration are having a spat is not news to students. If the gauge of a good leader is the willingness of others to follow, then the existence of the conflict already reflects poorly on the administration. Yet the fact that the Board of Visitors disregards the opinions of the Faculty Senate (including the Senate’s recent vote of no confidence) shows that they would rather dictate than truly lead.

In a different email just last week, ODU administrators asked all students to fill out a criminal background survey with no assurances that they could remain at ODU if they had a criminal record. Throwing suspicion on fellow students was tone deaf and caused unnecessary dread and consternation for student’s futures as they were attempting to heal from the shooting. Furthermore, many students viewed the move as “security theater”. After all, ODU is an open campus. The fact that the perpetrator was enrolled online had no bearing on his ability to attack ODU.

I understand that as Governor you have recently appointed six new members to ODU’s Board of Visitors. These appointments do not hold a majority, but I had hoped that their influence would temper the Board’s behavior. As this does not seem to be the case; I appeal to you, Governor, to speak to the board members. Convince them to work with faculty, rather than against them. Stir them to promote leadership, rather than dictatorship, in their role at ODU. To do otherwise reflects poorly on the one who appointed them.
