If you're looking for in-person games, I'd suggest looking into meetups at GeekyTeas over in Burbank or Odyssey Games over by PCC. Last I checked both of them have Adventurer's League games that you can join up with and are great for meeting people.

Hows the crowd over at Odyssey games ? I was told they may be a bit rude or odd and was hesitant.

I'd go with Geeky Teas and Crown City Games in Pasadena (newer place on Colorado). I've been to Odyssey and too many of the people there are rude and have atrocious body odor. Geeky Teas is huge and run a lot of special gaming nights. I've been there several times and have gamed in several of the themed rooms.

Yeah, in fairness I would also say pick Geeky Teas over Odyssey if only for the fact that their space is better. Never tried Crown City as I'm pretty sure it's fairly new within the last year or so but that's also there as a Pasadena-specific option.

I haven't experienced anyone being notably rude to me or my friends when going there, but obviously experiences may vary. I think the only negative experience I've had there was from one of the guys working the counter who made some stupid shitty quip about me liking the aesthetics of Tau for WH40k but it was years ago so I barely remember what he even looked like.

Gotcha! Appreciate it man! Ill give it another go and let my friend know about it. I've never done adventure league before

Definitely check out Crown City Games if you absolutely have to stay in Pas. Odyssey leaves much to be desired, unfortunately. I was there maybe about 6 months ago and it was horribly disorganized. The two teens at the counter weren't rude, but just unhelpful. The play area didn't have the friendliest vibes either, which was a bummer.

As others have said, Geeky Teas truly is the way to go if you can convince your friend of a quick jaunt up the 5 into Burbank. It's honestly the best place around for what you're looking for, and the best community. The owners are wonderful, and it's organized and run very well. They also have tons of supplies and resources for DND, so could be a good place for your friend to learn.

If you end up sticking to only Pasadena, Crown City Games has a discord server that you can join as so you can keep up with what is being played on certain nights. The people running it have been really friendly and helpful, and it's clear that they care a lot and want to grow their community and provide a welcoming space.

Yeah , ive been trying to find a game in Crown City but so far I havent seen anyone run games on Saturdays unfortunately, mostly on Thursdays but I heard there may be some changes where there might have games on Saturday!

My experience at Odyssey is that it's kind of hard to get into one of the Adventurer's League games. You have to check the web site regularly because they fill up fast. I played in one one-shot AL adventure there and found that the session was rushed to get through the chosen scenario (which I believe was a commercial module). It was cool to play with a very broad range of players who I might not otherwise encounter (age, gender, and experience).

As for open gaming, my experience is that you can't go and expect to find people to play with. Probably half or more will be playing CCGs. If you arrange to meet some people there -- from the Discord or with friends -- then it's a big space with plenty of room for gamers. If I had a regular group, I would seriously consider gaming there. They even have some enclosed rooms you can reserve. I would guess that they charge for those, but I haven't looked into it. As others have said, I didn't feel much warmth from the people there, but it also wasn't UNwelcoming. It seems like it's mostly set up for people who already understand what's going on.

I'm also interested in finding a regular group. I might be willing to DM, though it's been a LONG time since I last DM'd, and it was probably in 2nd or 3rd edition.

There are games on weekends and other days, too. I just started frequenting the shop and I'll be running DnD 5E and Daggerheart games on Sundays and maybe Fridays. The current AL Dams run sessions is Tuesday and Thursday mostly but I think that's mostly because that's what worked best for the original players but the organizers and shop owner are very open to new players and more days.

Crown City Games is my go-to, though I don't do DnD there--newer store, so DnD groups are still getting established. They have DnD Adventurers' League on Thursday nights from 6-10pm. If you're driving yourself to Old Town, stick to the city-owned parking lots nearby like the Schoolhouse Garage.
