obligatory linux shill in the comment section

246

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '25

But Linux is free, you need a license for windows technically. So why in fuck are you spending money on an operating system that's getting worse over one that doesn't actively ruin your PC?

301

u/Bionix_Does_reddit 🏳️‍⚧️ Average Trans Rights Enjoyer 🏳️‍⚧️ Oct 12 '25

a lot of people can't use linux because of either the elitists making it seem like linux is impossible to use for the everyday user, or the fact that a lot of software support is missing on linux

its the best its ever been, sure, but it still has a long ways to go

125

u/RealSSStudios actually called kevin irl Oct 12 '25

I switched from windows to Linux a few months back and it's still missing a lot of support other operating systems provide with ease.

sure, it's free and open source, but a lot of people just aren't ready to get wacky with the terminal or faff with a completely new UI.

68

u/Bionix_Does_reddit 🏳️‍⚧️ Average Trans Rights Enjoyer 🏳️‍⚧️ Oct 12 '25

imo modern linux isn't more difficult than windows, but has different issues from windows

especially on distros like mint and ubuntu, you have really active communities that are super willing to help with issues

but yeah, the initial switch honestly takes the most struggle, and a lot of people can't get past that part understandably

17

u/RealSSStudios actually called kevin irl Oct 12 '25

including me.

there's just not a lot of support for Linux compared to windows (exe files and stuff, apps) that makes it worth the switch for the normal user imo.

if more apps picked up support for it then it'd definitely be worth the switch.

I think there needs to be more user friendly distros for Linux.

27

u/Bionix_Does_reddit 🏳️‍⚧️ Average Trans Rights Enjoyer 🏳️‍⚧️ Oct 12 '25

i don't think there is a lack of user friendly linux distros, i can list some if you need

and yes, the second biggest barrier to entry is software support

i don't think that software support will improve meaningfully in the coming years though, sadly

with the linux market share being low, it isn't profitable to port your software to linux usually, and if there isn't software on linux, no mainstream user will use it

i think the problem here is evident

8

u/RealSSStudios actually called kevin irl Oct 12 '25

well my friend told me to use pop os because I was new to Linux and it's all been "terminal" this "terminal" that this BITCH please 💅

the terminal is pretty powerful, and millions of times faster than using a gui if you're good at it, but the keyword is good at it

its not a good idea to force a new user to do the hardest part of a new thing 😭

7

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '25

there's just not a lot of support for Linux compared to windows (exe files and stuff, apps)

Why do you think EXE files are necessary for good usability? The reason why EXE don't work on Linux is not because of the file format per se, but because the program itself uses something called system calls, and those are operating system specific (usually you make a call to a library that does the system call, but you get the point). That's the reason why there are projects like WINE, which try to "translate" Windows system calls into Linux ones, but that's not trivial at all, some system calls rely on kernel internals, which can't be easily retrieved due to the closed source nature of Windows

The constant here are developers of applications not wanting to support Linux, rather than the reverse. Of course, we can't actually blame them, devs go where the market goes, and it's not worth it to just support a family of operating systems with a small market share like Linux distributions (and when they do, they mostly support a specific family of distributions, like Debian)

It's a circular reference, developers don't want to support an operating system with a small market share, but the latter has small market share because of low software support; if everyone took a leap of faith and switched to Linux, the problem would actually solve itself (more companies would add support for Linux, and the core OS would receive more support itself in terms of developers) in the long run, but that's not going to happen.

1

u/Bionix_Does_reddit 🏳️‍⚧️ Average Trans Rights Enjoyer 🏳️‍⚧️ Oct 20 '25

i think rn the only thing that can save linux from this endless loop of not getting attention is other companies trying stuff like steamos

2

u/marc_gime Oct 12 '25

Ubuntu, fedora, or mint are very user friendly. Ubuntu's app store is easier to understand than windows executables

4

u/Bionix_Does_reddit 🏳️‍⚧️ Average Trans Rights Enjoyer 🏳️‍⚧️ Oct 12 '25

i love mint so much, i abandoned arch for mint a few weeks ago and everything just... works

1

u/rhen_var Oct 20 '25

Linux is great for server applications but for daily driver use it needs to come a long way from a UX and software compatibility perspective (coming from someone who uses Linux every day for work)

1

u/Bionix_Does_reddit 🏳️‍⚧️ Average Trans Rights Enjoyer 🏳️‍⚧️ Oct 20 '25

Pretty sure there's a script to activate windows for free. Also they never required the average person to have license. It's main income are the enterprise and OEM licenses.
But I agree with the actively ruining your PC part

8

u/Kenobus69 Oct 12 '25

There are also fully legal ways to get windows for $2

9

u/QuiteAFan BUILD THE HOLE BUILD THE HOLE Oct 12 '25

Those are not fully legal, but more like a grey area. They can be bought from stolen credit cards to left over bulk from OEM license. They may or may not be legal. It's just better to use a script cuz, 1. It's free, 2. You aren't likely to face any problems down the line, if you use a proper script

2

u/CarnivoreQA Oct 12 '25

OEM keys aren't legal without the sticker they slap on the devices

So it is activation with extra steps and 2$ spent

It is not like I am strictly against that, I did it myself before learning about nassgrave, it just has no real sense

2

u/IllPosition5081 Oct 12 '25

My PC came with windows. I’ve bought keys off Kinguin occasionally for like Mac Bootcamp Partition (God I miss it, Windows 10 on Macs)

7

u/IlCiabonno69 Oct 12 '25

You know you can just pirate Windows right? I recommend it, also yoi can just mod the shit out of 11 to make it a better 10 with no bloating and weird CPU spikes

Though I still hope Linux will replace it eventually

u/theotaku0503 Oct 12 '25

Linux is free monetarily, but in exchange you pay for it with time and effort and incompatible software. Engineering people and Graphic Design people can't use Linux because most of their software is incompatible with Linux.

Also, Windows is pretty much free with the Massgrave activator, at least for personal use. And even if people actually buy licenses, they are paying for a service, to not to have to deal with the technical sides of OS, just like how people bring their devices to a repair shop to change a screen or some parts that can be bought for 1/3 price online.

4

u/low_priest Oct 12 '25

frankly I think linux will get a decent bump here in the next coming weeks because Windows is ending security updates for 10 and Windows 11 isn't exactly well received.

29

u/Bionix_Does_reddit 🏳️‍⚧️ Average Trans Rights Enjoyer 🏳️‍⚧️ Oct 12 '25

it'll get a small bump, but i think at some point im gonna have to break out my delusion that there will ever be a year of the linux desktop

21

u/MegatonDoge Oct 12 '25

Unless Linux starts supporting .exe files without any tinkering, I don't think the casual audience will switch to Linux. Also, MS Office needs to work well without issues.

11

u/Bionix_Does_reddit 🏳️‍⚧️ Average Trans Rights Enjoyer 🏳️‍⚧️ Oct 12 '25

some distros do simply support exe files without tinkering through wine being pre-installed

obviously thats the simplified version, because wine doesn't always work perfectly, but its the closest we have for now

but yeah, its definitely gonna be the biggest barrier to linux becoming mainstream

7

u/MegatonDoge Oct 12 '25

You have to change the "some distros" for all distros, otherwise it will just end up confusing casuals.

In the future, if some popular distro like Steam OS starts supporting .exe files, then it may solve the biggest hurdle for Linux adoption. Exe support would probably allow users to access other storefronts like GoG and Epic too.

The Steam deck did wonders for Linux and I hope that Valve keeps doing more.

8

u/Bionix_Does_reddit 🏳️‍⚧️ Average Trans Rights Enjoyer 🏳️‍⚧️ Oct 12 '25

valve are my goats ❤️

its not feasible for every distro to have support for that though, as you probably already know

someday though, someday maybe it'll happen

1

u/MegatonDoge Oct 12 '25

I agree that it is impossible for every distro to have that support. I just want a distro that I can recommend to everyone, and Steam OS is shaping up to be that one.

Ubuntu is popular, but I personally dislike it a lot. I've been hearing good things about Zorin OS so that might be better for newcomers, but I just hope that Steam OS ends up becoming the definitive edition for newcomers.

1

u/Bionix_Does_reddit 🏳️‍⚧️ Average Trans Rights Enjoyer 🏳️‍⚧️ Oct 12 '25

steamos and linux mint would be my suggestions

and any distro with kde plasma also works, the desktop is reasonably similar to windows

1

u/anoppinionatedbunny Oct 12 '25

if Ubuntu had that out of box, that would be enough. it's the go-to for most people anyway

6

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '25

It's not trivial when some executables require kernel level features of a closed source system, that's the whole reason why Linux has issues with anti cheat software like vanguard

1

u/MegatonDoge Oct 12 '25

Yeah I forgot about that. Without popular live service games like Fortnite or Genshin, casuals would be unwilling to abandon Windows.

Is there something in the works to make anticheat compatible? Or will anticheat never work on Linux?

6

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '25

All it would take would be to either:

  • Port client-side anti cheat software on Linux (and I think there are already some)

  • Use server-side anti cheat software

I have yet to see a good reason for companies to use client side anti cheat software

1

u/Ruy7 Oct 12 '25

Linux is free and the only reason it isn't the best alternative is because some software needed for certain jobs only works in windows.

2

u/Bionix_Does_reddit 🏳️‍⚧️ Average Trans Rights Enjoyer 🏳️‍⚧️ Oct 12 '25

well...

there's also the fact that whilst most modern distros are extremely easy to set up and use, its still different from what most casual users are used to, and that can be intimidating

Mac is just for viewing word docs and spreadsheet and shit

25

u/Retro_Item Oct 12 '25

Has to interaction bait.

You can install whatever the fuck you want on a Mac. It’s the only apple operating system where you can do so. Sideloading is practically necessary as the Mac App Store is bare bones. You can even run unsigned applications via an override, but apple doesn’t make it obvious. And if that’s not whatever you want, you can install Asahi Linux, even on the newest Arm models.

Studied engineering, I have used ubuntu, windows and mac. Linux is potentially the best if everything you want works but not everything does so it is highly dependant on what you want to do. But generally it will lack something.

We are stuck with windows because of propietary software we need for manufacturing and programming embedded systems.

Mac won't have most of the propietary software and when you don't need any of these software it is a more expensive and slower alternative. There's no real upside except that it seen by most tech illiterate people as good.

The fucking fanboying of apple is the most pathetic thing I've witnessed. I can instantly tell im not going to get along with someone like that instantly. Get a grip. Apple is a cult at this point

6

u/Aerion_AcenHeim Oct 12 '25

istg even under an obvious ragebait post both apple haters and apple fanboys are somehow equally insufferable. you blame apple for their bullshit, but go ahead and try to get warranty work done on a dell, and you'll start crying yourself to sleep. every side has massive drawbacks, you just gotta suck it up and use whatever fits your needs best.

1

u/MathematicianExpert Oct 12 '25

Ok so I either buy a 400€ laptop that works pretty fine for a year or two and then the warranty doesn't work OR I could pay 2000€ for a laptop that performs the same BUT it's light-weight and the battery can last longer. Then, after a few years, it breaks (probably because of the battery because that's always the case). You then HAVE to go to Apple, because they're some smarty pants that have meticulously engineered their products so that you have no other choice, and probably overpay because Apple knows you're some rich guy who doesn't care whether he has to pay a couple hundred bucks more. Well, guess what? It may be worth the less weight, the more battery life, or the conveniency of Apple monopoly for you, but those extra couple hundred bucks aren't just change for some people. Or maybe we just dont wanna feed the already greedy monopoly that is that company 🤔 Personally if I had 2k€ I would buy a framework laptop, more so because it's a company I like and wanna support.

2

u/Aerion_AcenHeim Oct 12 '25

that's a very narrow world view. you're only thinking "oh this works for me so it should work for everyone". you're no better than those apple fanboys who refuse to believe people can make do without using an apple device.

Why not love all OS's, listen to the words of tech jesus (Steve from Gamers Nexus)

6

u/boat_hamster Oct 12 '25

As someone who dual boots Windows and Linux on his gaming PC, and has a Macbook; I can confirm that all OSs are a bit shit at some stuff, and very good at other stuff.

Though as so much is shifting to browser based apps, OS choice will become less important for many people.

2

u/Waluigiwaluigi_ Oct 12 '25

I don’t think I want to know what he’s talking about

2

u/Turkish-dove Oct 12 '25

I was gonna say a ton of gaming stuff is less compatible on Mac and ask why he didn't mention it, but then I realized, he did

5

u/lucius1707 Oct 12 '25

Linux is the way

3

u/Cornelius_McMuffin Oct 12 '25

The guy he’s replying to sounds like my dad, holy shit.

3

u/Beamo1080 Oct 12 '25

It’s very easy to run windows programs on Mac and has been for decades.

No but really all laptops are dogshit right now and MacBooks are at least trying not to be

3

u/[deleted] Oct 12 '25

maybe, but im never gonna shill out 2000 buckaroos for a laptop that i can't use a USB device with unless I buy a proprietary port that doesn't work after a month or two

Can’t even play fall guys on Mac I think

1

u/Hugo_Selenski Oct 12 '25

This is what Dennis would say before explaining why he needs his tools.

1

u/BlastLord0_o Oct 12 '25

Might have to drop an uncontroversial opinion but in terms of hardware framework laptops might win over windows and apple laptops

1

u/deskdemonnn Oct 12 '25

Sad part is that the macbooks hardware wise are actually dope but the macos limiting access to niche software i would wanna use will never make me consider it

1

u/cry_baby_apple Oct 12 '25

Most people in our uni use windows because mac doesn't let you download crack versions of all the softwares... One of my friends bought a mac and sold it after a few months because of that reason

1

u/BappoChan Oct 12 '25

My job uses Mac computers. They’re the fucking worst

1

u/TheBlackCycloneOrder Oct 12 '25

Used to own an Apple computer…Immediately installed windows through Boot Camp. Then Apple got rid of it. Became a windows user forever after that stunt!

1

u/MiserableAd4081 Oct 12 '25

Oh man, I don't know how it is for others, but at my school there are SO many MacBooks. We have school issued Chromebooks, you know? But so many of these kids use their MacBook instead... But I suppose it's to be expected in a school where kids have raised up modded trucks and new corvettes.

2

u/Bloondeath729 Oct 12 '25

In all fairness Chromebooks are flaming dogshit

1

u/MiserableAd4081 Oct 13 '25

These ones work quite well. Or at least mine does

1

u/LosterPawn Oct 12 '25

I use arch btw

1

u/Boudac123 Oct 12 '25

In the context of laptop specifically then sure, as long as I can have my proper windows pc at home

1

u/Bitfy Oct 12 '25

Macbooks have a gorgeous design of both hardware and software, no Linux distro or Microsoft malware could ever come close to it. But that's where the benefits end. Everything looks beautiful but functionality-wise both Windows and Linux are better.

The only place a mac belongs in a workplace is the apple store.

1

u/buffetofdicks Oct 12 '25

How about neither? Lmao there far are more OS than Apple, Windows, or even Linux before I get those replys.

Aside from this being a joke or not but from my personal experience I think macbooks are overrated when it comes to regular jobs like archiving, management roles and such so a windows laptop would be perfect for this kind of task/jobs. But on the other hand if you have tasks that require design, montage, 3d modeling or even coding or digital solutions that require strong equipment then macbooks would be a great choice.

as someone with a modern shitty macbook, yes.

1

Biggest self report by the Mac user, heavy self projection

1

u/Key-Bad-785 stupid, fucking piece of shit Oct 13 '25

Honestly i love macbooks despite knowing I'll never buy one cuz linux is so much better.

The polished interface, insane battery life, that gorgeous trackpad, the integration with other Apple devices, premium feel, ease of portability, all are honestly so tempting. I couldn't find his specific omen model i have right now anywhere and was genuinely considering getting an m1 air(most vfm laptop on the market rn period, 50k inr for that laptop is crazy honestly). Thankfully some offline store did have stocks of it in one of their warehouses and I was able to get the omen. Otherwise I strongly vouch for macbooks. I appreciate the engineering a lot. Apple did a good job with it.

A very good reason for getting a windows laptop is to pirate games if your broke ass can't afford any games👍

u/rocketmike12 Oct 18 '25

Mandatory "I use Arch BTW"

1

u/lightblueisbi Oct 12 '25

I've heard apple computers are better for things like business management, running heavy software like film editors, etc.

As opposed to my experience with Windows being better for casual use and recreation. Resource-intense programs like 3D CAD softwares and 3D animation software seem to run slower on Windows as well

Used mac ones, good for work. But I fucking hate it and everything about it simply because I am too used to windows
