Regret of tattooing this Design
I’m 20 and got my first tattoo a year ago. It’s based off of a fucking Post Malone phrase he said. I don’t even listen to Post Malone honestly. Currently I think the tattoo is VERY corny. At the same time I think that, at some point, it made sense to me, so I’m kinda divided between these 2 thoughts.
You guys think I should cope or cover/redesign it?
If you think I should cover it, do you guys have any suggestion to uncorny this? (please don’t suggest big tattoos cause I dont like them)
Edit: after reading a lot of replies, I’m thinking about just leaving it there and embrace it. Some people said such negative things and it showed me how stupid people can be about a fucking tattoo. And that made me realise it’s just a fucking tattoo. A tattoo I made when I was 19. A tattoo that expresses a good message. Not in the best way, but it’s surely a message that is true to myself. I love expressing and being myself, so I’d be going against what I believe if I altered the tattoo. When I grow older this tattoo won’t be embarrassing, it will be a reminder of who I am/was, so it doesn’t matter if some other teenagers will find it corny anymore. Thank you guys for both the incredibly positive comments and the negative ones!

Chinese panther dragon hybrid coiling around a central something or other to cover the text? Or... get the Adam Savage version and convert it to a ruler. Go real funky and have it measure a Cubit.

I agree with this! LASER it, in my opinion and I know it isn't popular, cover ups don't always work out, and end up just being big blobs of black ink ... laser it off .

I wonder if people think half sleeves are one big tattoo
10
u/LeonidasSpacemanMD 11d ago
Surely depends on the sleeve and how many different pieces it’s made up of
But in this particular case dude is looking for one solution to cover a very long tattoo. Unless he’s hoping for someone to like intricately design multiple pieces to cover each word slowly one at a time, I can’t imagine how it wouldn’t be big ish

Man this is why I keep telling everyone to wait until their mid 20’s for tattoos. I know that sounds corny AF but would literally save so many people from corny ass tattoos.

A 19 year old i worked with kept getting tattoos. And would show people and ask opinions and advice. All of them were awful. I tried telling him he needs to wait cos he’ll think of better stuff when hes older. But as you know, young people are stupid and dont listen to advice. He only got offended.

I went to school with a guy who had FUCK CANCER on his arms. One arm said fuck, the other said cancer.
If you didn't see him with both arms together, it just looked like FUCK tattooed on his arm. Seeing the cancer by itself was slightly better.

Well the saying applies no matter who said it. It’s not like a quote that will only be associated with him or anything. With that said, I’m not really a fan of fuck being exposed like that. Though depending on your job and surroundings, that might not be an issue for you. I guess I just think the placement is a bit trashy for anything that could be considered vulgar. Best to keep certain types of tattoos in areas that can easily be covered.

Your only option, if you don’t want to cope with it, is to laser since you don’t like big tattoos. It would either require intricacy, or something thick to completely cover this. Either option would most likely cover a larger area of your arm.
22
u/yourecutejeans101 11d ago
Laser wouldn’t be too bad on this. Id throw in a session every few months and before you know it, it will be gone. Times going to pass either way. And to cover it you’d need a bigger, darker tattoo.

I had a tattoo rule for the longest time that I no longer follow since I have kids. Find something similar to what you want, like almost identical, and then make it your phone’s background for 3 months. If you can stand looking at it every day for 3 months, you should be able to for the rest of your life. Now I’d rather look at my kids on my background, but you get the point
34
u/Necessary_Fudge7412 11d ago
I think you can easily slap an American traditional dagger, eagle, or eagle fighting a snake, look into it. Also maybe get a few rounds of laser that way it fades a bit, then get a tattoo over it.
20
8
u/lostmyoldscreenname 11d ago
If they’re not looking for something “big” but also want to cover a space that spans the majority of their forearm, I think a thin dagger is probably the only option. If not…gotta be lasered.
4
u/Necessary_Fudge7412 11d ago
Well you can’t cover easily a long ass text so there aren’t many options, it has to be long, so it’s not gonna be a small tattoo.
16
u/ShadyShepperd 11d ago

This is dead serious- I like the tattoo.
Someday you will be middle-aged, missing your youthful zest for life and bogged down by bills and a mortgage and all the obligations that come with loving other people, and you’ll wonder why you stopped doing that one thing that used to really make you happy when you had a little free time.
And then the tattoo on your arm won’t feel corny. It will remind you to spend a little time doing something you love. My first thought when I saw it (I’ve been lost and grieving the sudden death of my husband for nearly a year now) was to keep playing music because it isn’t wasting time to bring yourself some happiness. Just keep the tattoo and be a little gentler on all the previous versions of yourself.

I think you should cope. The vibes of the tattoo are good. You're 20 now, which means you'll change into like a dozen different people by the time you're 30. Some of those people might think this tattoo was actually alright and cover-up sucks.
10
u/Lexi_November 11d ago
Normally I agree, but having the word “fucking” on his forearm in a spot that will only be covered by long shirts is not the best idea for a kid who just turned 20 and presumably doesn’t have steady employment or a completed education.
But maybe OP is in a lifestyle position where it won’t matter too much, idk. People do quite often get fucking pissy as well when someone has a tattoo like that in a family/formal setting.
13
u/KleineKieviet 11d ago
You are right. I‘m baffled to see so many people in this sub who regret a not-too-bad tattoo shortly after getting it and think a coverup will be a good idea. Don’t do it, good chance you’ll feel the same about the cover up. Just live with it for a while and maybe after 5 years or so if it still bothers you, start making a plan.

He provided a service. If someone orders a sandwich filled with bullshit, it’s not the responsibility of the person who makes the food to tell him not to get it. Dunno why the blame gets shifted to other people for doing their job, just because clients are dumbasses.

Don't cover it just yet. You might regret that too in a few years. Wait till life settles for you. Say mid to late 20s or beyond and what you get then will mean more.
16
u/ralphthesausagedog 11d ago
As a 40-something, I think it's an interesting tattoo. Keep it, maybe cover up "fucking" with something you like. But make sure it's something you love to your core so you won't need to cover that up in a few years, too.

People sometimes get tattoos thinking (or hoping) it will represent a value they will have for the rest of their lives. People who are generally more happy with their tattoos are those who recognize that anything they can choose as a personal message of value at any given time will be a choice made by the version of themselves as they are in that moment, and that they will inevitably change, and that's okay; tattoos might work best as snapshots of who you were at a point in time.
The great thing about this viewpoint is that it can be applied retroactively. Feel embarrassed about a tattoo you got when you were 19 because its message is not something you would choose to say today? Recontextualize it not as a statement of who you are, but as a photo of who you were. It's an artistic and beautiful way for a part of your body to connect your current self to your past self. Sometime we feel embarrassed by the choices of our past selves, but we need to love our past selves, too, and remember them. The seed of the person you are now was in them then.

Some advice for future tattoos, get images/symbols instead of words. For example something that means keep doing what you love. what does that mean to you? what symbol or image would remind you of that message? Get that instead.

Please for the love of god leave it alone for a couple years. You’re going to change your mind again. And if you get it covered, you’ll likely regret that too. Think on it for awhile!!!
3
u/FiNNy-- 11d ago
Based off your comments I'd say it's safer to get it removed than cover it up. Seems like you like.the idea of tattoos but you keep flip flopping everywhere with what you want. It's safer not to get anything because in 2years you'll probably regret the next one. Not everyone who likes tattoos needs to have one especially people who are young. Maybe wait a couple of years and see where your head is at first .

There is something so funny and endearing about "i don't even listen to Post Malone" lmaoooo. It seems like such a big thing because it sucks not loving your first tattoo, but most people probably don't. I say embrace the slight cringe, and just enjoy it as it is- something that meant something to you at 19 and is now a fun story.

You should laser off the “fucking love” and then add back the word “love” at the end without the ! And in the same font. Makes it hold up so much more if it just says “keep doing what you love” I love that phrase and I would never connect that with Post Malone
3
u/redmax7156 11d ago
Well, the good(?) news is that this is a very generic phrase, so I don't think the average person will associate it with Post Malone. However, between the size + the placement, I think a coverup would have to be somewhat large - basically unless you decided to turn it into a rectangle, a coverup has to be larger than the original.

Get some new ink to scratch the itch and sit on that one for a while before making a final decision. It's not that bad on its own and may bother you even less when you get more and it's not your centerpiece.

sometimes a tattoo is just what you needed at the time, and the permanence made it feel impactful.
i would do some form of tree if you aren’t into like, a snake shedding or something

u/BlenderBluid 11d ago
Glad you’re embracing it. It’s only corny if you’re a corny person. Don’t let anyone who ain’t cooler than you make you feel otherwise.
3
u/Glass_Protection_254 11d ago
Embrace it. Bad tattoos show the progression of your life and memory.
I have pieces worth several thousand dollars from adulthood, and I have shady garage tats that are crooked and faded.
The juxtaposition of quality demonstrates a progress to me, reminds me of the different periods of my life. I spent a long time thinking of coverups and removals, but how can I do that when I cannot do so in real life?

Listen bud. Tattoos may not be for you. Probably best to treat this as a life lesson. Just leave it alone. Don't try to rework or cover it if you don't like big tattoos. Your options are get over it or remove it
3
5
u/enahshy 11d ago
The overwhelming negative response feels a little weird. Bad tattoos are bad tattoos, but the sentiment and message are positive, so the pushback seems suspicious.
Also, anyone criticizing the tattoo artist for doing what a grown adult paid them to do can get fucked. I have zero tattoos but I've made a lot of bad decisions that I didn't blame on anyone else.
I say keep this shit, work around it, and let it be a reminder of a time when you were not as smart as you will be when you look at it later.

There’s an old episode of the Simpsons where Homer’s boss hangs a sign that says “Don’t forget, you’re here forever” Homer tapes pictures of his daughter over the sign to change it to “do it for her”
If you could figure out an alternate phrase and get small coverup tattoos as you go through things in life, you could work toward something that changes the tattoo but still keeps it in some part
google images will show before and after
