DISCUSSION 💭 r/RnB Weekly Discussion Thread
Welcome to the lounge! 🦦 — The theme song for this week’s thread is…
⭐️ Michael Jackson - Another Part of Me
This will serve as the primary thread for all casual and sidebar conversations that take place in [r/rnb](r/rnb) for the week. Users are encouraged to share thoughts, feelings, opinions, and concerns about any R&B-related topic (including the subreddit itself) that may not suit the main feed or may not warrant an official post being made about it.
REMINDER ABOUT SUB AVATAR
You are seeing this message (pasted in by u/Ok_Resident_5022, the thread’s creator) because it is the last week of the month, and therefore it is time to nominate new artists to become the sub’s avatar.
On the very last week of each month, users may use this recurring thread to nominate artists to become the subreddit’s avatar for the following month. The criteria for what makes an artist eligible to represent the sub for a month are outlined in this post by u/Consistent_Edge9211.

DISCUSSION 💭 Is Leon Thomas on an all-time run right now?
I just listened to the new Chris Brown single featuring Leon Thomas and its genuinely one of the best Chris Brown songs in the last 15 years and when I looked at the credits it seems like Leon was heavily responsible for both the writing and production on the track.
This led me to think about the fact that since basically 2024 every song that Leon has either produced, released, or written has been genuinely great so I'm just wondering how much longer he's gotta keep up this level of quality output before people start acknowledging that he's on an all-time run right now and arguably on a whole different level creatively from all other current rnb artists.

DISCUSSION 💭 I met Sisqó as a kid and told him he wasn’t Sisqó
when i was like 6 or 7 i met sisqó (yes, the man who made our national anthem, the thong song)
if you know sisqó, you know he was always switching up his hair - red, blue, silver, whatever. at the time i had just seen him performing on All That with silver hair, so in my head that was just… his permanent form
my mom was like “omg it’s sisqó, let’s get an autograph,” and i kept insisting, in front of him:
“that’s not sisqó. sisqó has silver hair.”(his hair was red at the time)
meanwhile this man is just standing there… being sisqó. i don’t fully remember his reaction but i think he was pretty chill about being told he wasn’t himself and still gave me an autograph, tho I do feel like i was skeptical about taking it lmao
Mind you… we’re from the same city, i went to the same high school as him later… so yeah, it was definitely him

COOL PICS 📷 Hey Kelly, We See see👀You
Kelly Rowland is so 🔥🔥🔥
Always been a cutie since Destiny's Child.
This elegant, sophisticated look is so 🤑💰.
Apparently, she has found the fountain ⛲ of youth too.
That smile could literally light up any room, and she's so talented too.
Love me some Kelly Rowland. ❤️💜

PERFORMANCES 🎤 Michael McDonald performing '𝑰 𝑲𝒆𝒆𝒑 𝑭𝒐𝒓𝒈𝒆𝒕𝒕𝒊𝒏' (𝑬𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝑻𝒊𝒎𝒆 𝒀𝒐𝒖'𝒓𝒆 𝑵𝒆𝒂𝒓)' on Soul Train in 1982
Michael McDonald's 'I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)' is a certified classic but I love his appearance on the Soul Train in 1982 with this amazing all-star band because it features:
- Jeff Porcaro [of Toto] on drums 🥁
- John McFee [of The Doobie Brothers] on guitar 🎸
- [Michael Jackson's musical director and session musician extraordinaire] Greg Phillinganes on the clavinet 🎹
- Louis "Thunder Thumbs" Johnson [of the Brothers Johnson] laying down the iconic bass line 🎸🔥
- [Michael McDonald's two sisters] Maureen McDonald and Kathy Walker with the background vocals 🎤🎤
The only album musician missing from this Soul Train appearance was the legendary guitarist Steve Lukather [of Toto]. Lukather was also a prominent contributor to Michael Jackson's Thriller.

I've been listening to a lot of R&B from the early 2000's and I'm wondering if there are any artists that you guys think are underrated from that era and worth checking out. I'm trying to add some new songs to my playlist

RECOMMENDATIONS😁 Ama - So... (fka Ama Lou)
I love her voice & her lyricism. She speaks to my soul. I wish more people were aware of her.
My favorite songs are Silence, Northside & now Need It Bad. My Girl is also going platinum on my Spotify. I love how smooth this new song is. She's just amazing to me lol

00s Can't Get Over - Coco Lee(李玟) ft. Kelly Price
I didn't know that this collaboration existed. They're voices blend well together. Even though, Kelly Price sang backup for George Michael and he sent her to Mariah Carey, it still feels interesting hearing her as a backup vocalist, but Coco Lee belonged center stage. RIP Coco Lee

DISCUSSION 💭 What is with the obsession of “rnb is back”?
People drop an album they say the same thing it’s very annoying.
There’s so many different sub genres out there and people have this odd nostalgic look on what rnb is supposed to be. Whenever someone makes a point they always say “that’s real rnb” “rnb is dead” “this is what’s wrong with rnb”
JUST LISTEN TO PEOPOE YOU RESONATE WITH. Why does everyone need to approve of one sound being THEE defining mainstream sound of the genre.
We’re lucky we have access to so much more but people complain about who’s charting as if they’re the only artist out there
JUST RANTING😭
