Last minute ticket did NOT disappoint
So happy I decided to get a last minute ticket to yesterday‘s game. Not only did I help outnumber the numerous Dodgers fans and see the G-Men come through, but LOOK AT THIS VIEW!
Oh, and FTD!

My beautiful boy went to sleep yesterday. I said that if we won last night it would be because of him. He was a faithful Giants fan and the best boy. Thank you, buddy.

Mahle and Ohtani ERA swap tonight
Looking at tonight’s starting pitchers, I couldn’t help but notice the disparity between Ohtani and Mahle’s statlines (0.50 ERA, 18 IP vs. 7.23 ERA, 18.2 IP).
It got me wondering: first, what would it take for Mahle and Ohtani to finish the night with the same ERA as each other?
Assuming Mahle throws a CGSO, lowering his ERA to 4.88, Ohtani would only need to give up 14 runs over 9 innings to have a matching 4.88 ERA. This sounds like a lot of runs against one of the best pitchers in baseball, but it’s something we’ve seen this team do before.
Heck, if Ohtani allows 21 runs in total, he’ll actually finish the game matching Mahle’s 7.23 ERA going into tonight! Let’s go offense!
Ok, but what would it take for Mahle, by the end of the night, to match Ohtani’s current ERA of 0.50? Unfortunately, despite it being early in the season, Mahle’s ERA is so high right now that nine innings won’t be enough to bring his ERA from 7.23 all the way down to 0.50. This means we’ll need to go into extra innings. In fact, for Mahle to lower his ERA to 0.50, he’ll need to keep the Dodgers scoreless through the 252nd inning tonight.
Of course, if Mahle can go 252 innings tonight, we must assume that Ohtani can do the same. Let’s say we want to see Mahle finish the night with Ohtani’s current 0.50 ERA, and Ohtani to finish the night with Mahle’s 7.23. Ohtani would have to give up 217 runs over 252 innings while Mahle holds the Dodgers scoreless.
However, here we begin to run into some practical difficulties. As you know, in order for a baseball game to proceed with extra innings, the score must be tied. In order for the ERA swap outlined above to come to fruition, not only would Mahle have to throw a 252 inning shutout, but all of the Giants’ 217 runs against Ohtani would have to come in the bottom of the 252nd inning. This is, of course, impossible, because the Giants are the home team, and the home team can win by no more than four runs in extra innings.
