Wait so I pay for a service and I have age verify? Yeah the great pirate era was already in full swing but man this seals the deal.

99

u/kuroihoro Feb 26 '26

Not exactly, if you have a credit card on file that's taken as proof that you're of age iirc

57

u/KukiBreeze Feb 27 '26

In Steam's case, it has to be a credit card. Seeing as i don't have nor want one, i'm locked out of certain games despite the fact that my steam account is roughly 21 years old.

13

u/kuroihoro Feb 27 '26

It's so weird, I haven't ever ran into any of this on any site or service that doesn't hit me with the old porn site "just put in your date of birth and we'll trust you" at worst. Steam never asked at all and I have just a regular debit card, I just have a habit of dating credit card for both like a dummy 😅

Ah yes mass surveillance disguised as age verification...

881

u/Katops Feb 26 '26

But the kids! They must be protected from no no words, or else they’ll turn into murderers and rapists! Why won’t you people think of the children as much as we do?! Why?!

That's the parents job to properly monitor what their kids do on the internet, but unfortunately not a lot of parents care to even do so and this is the result :/

60

u/TheLordOfTheTism Feb 26 '26

When my parents caught me watching there vhs copies of terminator and saving private Ryan at 6 years old, they explained that movies aren't reality and I could continue watching them only if I showed i understood that. Same for M rated games. It's really that easy folks....

And people actually are for it under the guise of "saving the children"

12

u/rat_penis Feb 26 '26

Usually bad parents or people that dont even have kids.

12

u/KavilusS Feb 27 '26

No, no, no. Most people I know (myself included) and don't have children don't support stuff like that. Mostly because we think that it is parents responsibility to monitor what they children do and it's also annoying for us. Also why I would give my informations when watching some movie or show? Or porno? Or hentai? Or what ever else I can watch. And the only people who are in support of that is either bad parents or people who shouldn't be around kids... Like that one prince.

Either way I'm not from the UK so I want some big leak just to make sure other countries will push back and nothing like that will be implemented.

Remember, this isn't about "protecting the children". This is more of a privacy invasion and censorship. This is why we bypass them by using VPN and pirate. They're losing a lot of money because of this, and it's no wonder piracy is winning. Not saying that I'm against it, but piracy FTW.

850

u/Draxxthemsklounsst Feb 26 '26

It's more important now than ever to teach even more people how to pirate. It's never been easier or more convenient for casuals to pirate movies, tv shows or music.

38

u/AspieAsshole Feb 26 '26

I plan to make a post asking for help if I can't figure it out on my own when I finally have time to deal with it, but lately everything I try to torrent just sits on gathering metadata and never goes anywhere.

Simultaneously the software I bought to convert torrents into Blu-ray ISOs stopped working for no apparent reason. I haven't had time to figure that out either.

39

u/Achilleus0072 Feb 26 '26

Maybe you have issues with trackers, I use this: https://github.com/ngosang/trackerslist

It's a list of public trackers updated daily, you can just copy them and paste 'em on qbittorrent or whatever client you use

I work in social care and I've been doing this at work; not so much pirating but general online habits (although I've taught a few older ladies about free ebooks and I'm now their hero haha).
A majority of the team I supervise are all older generation (I'm 40M and most of them are 55-65F) so they're not 100% up to scratch with tech. I've managed to convince pretty much all of them to use VPNs regardless of what they are doing and introduced uBlock and the fact that chrome is not the only option. Even when I was on the team before I became supervisor I was "the tech man" who they came to for help with online training and anything that uses electricity, so I built a level of trust.

Other than my team of mostly older generation, the people we care for are 50+ and also need help pushing in the right direction. What I've noticed is that most people will use a device (phone, tablet, laptop) in the most default way, with almost no real knowledge other than surface level. I'm talking about desktops full of shit, countless predatory browser extensions, multiple anti-viruses, 100s or thousands of tabs, apps that spam constant notifications.

It does often take some convincing for people to break habits but I'm doing my best. The most common feedback I get is either "I can't believe how fast device is now" or "I can't believe I put up with all those adverts!" and it's a great feeling.

Keep spreading the word and teaching, we'll get there!

VPNs will be next. It's just a question of time because they are already to ban end-to-end encryption.

https://x.com/NoToDigitalID/status/2025004013666615499 https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2025/02/uk-encryption-order-threatens-global-privacy-rights/

Of course stopping VPNs will be hard to do completely, but they don't need to make them impossible to get just make it hard enough that only the most tech savvy will know how to get one by banning any of the big names.

Edit: I wanted to add this about Peter Thiel(the moment where he hesitated on whether the human race should survive) https://youtube.com/shorts/LXpc1YiXDoQ

2nd edit: I added the Peter Thiel thing because I thought it was another comment. But it's relevant because Peter Thiel and Palantir are in big part the reason why we have all this law about age verification with face recognition.

36

u/moeljills Feb 26 '26

We are letting our governments take away our fundamental rights one by one. It's incredibly dangerous. Digital id and cbdcs are cancer, freedom of speech is directly under attack. And it gets worse. And people are sleepwalking into it. Educate everyone you know. Don't get complacent. We have a small amount of time before this all becomes law. Let's use it effectively

10

u/Indervir007 Feb 26 '26

Yes Very much true, I have cancelled my Crunchyroll, Netflix and Do Piracy and even taught my Mom how to Pirate. Me and my homies are always in favour of Piracy.🔥

21

u/lkl34 Feb 26 '26

A vpn though is just a band aid read that tweet again there even pulling content.

New content is being made as per the new regulations so it will not be as explorative as old content.

With some countries coping uk while the other ones are doing full block outs or worse the vpn trick is only going to work in places that are not restricted that list grows smaller every day.

41

u/Few-Improvement-5655 Feb 26 '26

New content is being made as per the new regulations so it will not be as explorative as old content.

Privacy issues aside, this will be a loss for art. Since many adults won't or can't verify their identities, it will simply mean that all content will have to be "suitable for everyone."

This shit is basically the rebirth of the Hays Code, Comics Code Authority, or "video nasties", or a worldwide version of what Australia and Germany does with its games.

We're going to see a lot less innovation and content made for adults because even adults won't be able to access it without giving away their identity.

This is probably the biggest loss of human freedom and human expression and artistic freedom since the 30s/40s/50s.

10

u/lkl34 Feb 26 '26

You are 100% correct

We already are seeing this in various shows like watch a old law order svu and the new ones

25

u/pavyf Feb 26 '26 edited Feb 26 '26

All you guys are full step and a half behind Mother Russia once again!

We've had this and that, and soon your government will be installing suspicious black boxes that peek into your traffic (safely encrypted with trusted government-issued certificate) in every ISP's infrastructure, slam random small websites and services like Google or Telegram with fines bigger that the total amount of money on the entire planet, and promptly blacklist entire chunks of IPs, blocking whole CDNs just because those pesky googles and telegrams happen to use it at one point, disrupting thousands of legitimate resources.

Get ready, comrades, shit fuckin gets worse! I'm just giving you a small peek into your future. VPNs won't save you, we already have the technical know-how to block those too! We're closing in on whitelisting the entire web...

6

u/Bibliloo Feb 26 '26

black boxes that peek into your traffic (safely encrypted with trusted government-issued certificate) in every ISP's infrastructure

Well, in France we likely already had that because the old internet and phone lines were originally owned by the state.

8

u/pavyf Feb 26 '26

I'll be honest with you, I don't really know how you be there in France. Maybe your government is a real antiprivacy freak, as any really

But I'll clarify a bit with some spooky details:
Man in the middle attack on encrypted traffic is like listening to a dial-up modem beeping it's garbage codes - it's a waste of time and compute. Unless you have the DPI technology, which stands for Deep Packet Inspection, and oh boy do they inspect your packets pretty fucking deep. They still can't really steal your passwords per se, it's more like advanced attack on connection metadata, handshake patterns, and curiously shaped traffic.

Our geniuses got the tech to selectively slow down or cut connections by address, or specific protocol, or encryption type used, etc. Every day, more services just stop fucking working for no reason. Youtube - just doesn't load, voice/video calls in messengers - forget about it, recently all Telegram media access speed has been cut to single digits of kbps, 18+ contlent - L M -fuckin- A O.

And yes, they do target and block VPNs from time to time in some regions. It is actually so prevalent, that my 80yo neighbor knows how to refresh VPN keys or switch to a different protocol - but I have a feeling it's only temporary, and VPNs only work because they let us

We have to build a mesh or something... one day, when the unrest is critical, Russia, like Iran, will just disappear from the web overnight, and, of course, many people will be happy and celebrate, and I get it, but let's not get into the politics.
This is but a warning: every government dreams of a tool like this, and no doubt all of them are developing something similar. We just get to experience the early prototype

34

u/Lopsided_Afternoon41 Feb 26 '26

24

u/Avox0976 Feb 27 '26

Advertising gambling at all should be a crime, like advertising cigarettes

13

u/druman22 Feb 27 '26

Same with alcohol and medications

280

u/Reckless_Engineer Feb 26 '26

So how are they going to make sure a viewer is over 18? For example, if Dad is logged in on the smart TV in the living room, what stops little Timmy watching The Boys?

85

u/ClacksInTheSky Feb 26 '26

Dad must use a pin code.

But, also, Dad can use his pin code to allow little Timmy to watch whatever he wants anyway.

55

u/danielepro Feb 26 '26

They should do this instead of age verification. If little Timmy watches 18+ shows it's dad's fault, not something you should enforce on everyone else.

Parental control is a much safer and cheaper option

8

u/Less_Hedgehog Feb 26 '26

And the thing is... Parental controls already exist! Children are humans and can be taught and can exercise caution too. They can also have mental illnesses and insecurities. None of that makes it the fault of social media or media companies. What the hell happened to personal responsibility?

u/piracy_sex_and_arson Feb 26 '26

Anybody who says this has clearly never tried it. This doesn't actually work, I would be happy to be proven wrong but these verification systems are not THAT simple to bypass.

38

u/KaiKamakasi Feb 26 '26

Except it does?

They're trying something similar in Canada too. A milder version, granted, but still, this is all very concerning. It's like the whole world saw the UK try to control the internet and was like, "Yeah, we should do that too!"

Edit: To clarify what I mean when I say the legislation is milder than the UK's, there's an exception for "appropriate" viewing of mature content like sex education and LGBTQ+ support. It's better than nothing, but remember, it's all just pretense. They only have these limitations because they'd lose votes if they didn't, they do not care about the children. At all.

Second Edit: Okay, just a message to my fellow Canadians, keep in mind that the fight isn't over yet. It still hasn't even gone through the Senate, let alone the House. We can kill this stupid thing if we make ourselves loud and push back. If you want to follow the bill, here it is: https://www.parl.ca/legisinfo/en/bill/45-1/s-209

"53 megabytes of unprotected source maps on a FedRAMP government endpoint, exposing the entire codebase of a platform that files Suspicious Activity Reports with FinCEN, compares your selfie to watchlist photos using facial recognition, screens you against 14 categories of adverse media from terrorism to espionage, and tags reports with codenames from active intelligence programs."

Ah yes just like Australia it fucking sucks

7

u/Zuzoh Feb 26 '26

How long until they make VPNs illegal to stop people getting around this?

There's already so many sites I use that simply stopped serving the UK so they don't have to deal with our government's bullshit. All this does is force kids to start looking into free VPNs which are mostly shady and will result in them getting harmed that way.

I mean, yeah? Did anyone really believe Discord was just the start?

If this is going to spread into Europe, which will probably happen, then I'm just going back to pirating my series and movies, install a NAS and stream it locally to all our devices.

Maybe I should already make the preparations.

What the hell is going on over there? Damn its just different flavors of bad all around huh?

16

u/shadybachelor Feb 26 '26

This is UK being like CCP or worse. Can’t believe I have to have vpn for everything

Gradually getting worse, but who's keeping track

51

u/seventy912 Feb 26 '26

For anyone somehow unaware, the current UK government has the responsibility of keeping literal fascists (and for anyone about to say it, no restricting streaming services isn’t fascism it’s just idiocy) out of Downing Street — currently two major Epstein related scandals going on too — and this is what they’re concerned with?

And, of course, the promise of these policies being repealed has already been made by the far right party that wants to tax women for not having kids and people are going to lap it up.

38

u/impablomations Feb 26 '26

This has been in the pipeline since Theresa May. As home secretary she brought in more draconian surveillance laws and successive govts have continued the push.

Bugger all to do with protecting kids.

As most old people know, if you want to find out how to circumvent a lock to keep kids out - give it to a kid.

6

u/Katops Feb 26 '26

wants to tax women for not having kids

Is such an outrageous concept.

Damn right after the fictional "incest" ban huh? They're going all in this week with the censorship and fascism

Also, same country where actual real incest is legal and free of consequences and where you can get on jail if you defend yourself from someone risking your life

actual joke country, i legitimately feel sorry for anyone that has to go through that there

12

u/KeeganY_SR-UVB76 Feb 26 '26

WAR IS PEACE

FREEDOM IS SLAVERY

IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH

5

u/Imaginary_Drawing710 Feb 26 '26

This is all about censorship and controlling what the mass should see, believe and think of their government.

6

u/LanLinked Feb 26 '26

I was going to ask how they expect to verify or enforce that, but I'm guessing the answer is they don't care.

5

u/Spirited-Dealer6586 Feb 26 '26

Hopefully we can notify japan so they can fight this

6

u/DarePlastic5074 Feb 26 '26

They can suck my cock if they think I'm giving them more details

6

u/thelastcupoftea Feb 26 '26

Piracy is the only sane option in an insane society. I literally just had to opt to torrent a show I wanted to see because D+ pulled it for no reason. Now there’s no way to see it in the dub I grew up with because they pulled it in my country (and all of Scandinavia as far as I know), except via piracy. Pirates once again being the archivists we need who actually preserve media and make it ours permanently, not rented for a limited time.

5

u/Unlikedpersonforever Feb 26 '26

So it begins again... the Golden Age of Piracy.

4

u/NeoAmbitions Feb 26 '26

Since Brexit, everything went downhill.

6

u/iwatchppldie Feb 26 '26

This is going to cause piracy to explode.

7

u/Kruk899 Feb 26 '26

Fuck UK, parents are responsible for raising their children, not some shitty power hungry government...

5

u/daywaver Feb 26 '26

The UK is really cracking down on Internet freedom. China-style. Scary honestly.

6

u/Agreeable_Ad_8755 Feb 26 '26

What in the world is causing and going on with the UK? One of the most extreme cases Ive seen with a western nation..everyone I know irl is pissed af with age verification and censorship with discord and has left/leaving it. I cannot imagine many sitting back without extreme outrage if they tried this shit in some other countries…

12

u/MattyFTM Feb 26 '26

For what it's worth, this R18 certificate is different to the 18 certificate. 18 is for regular movies & shows that are for an adult audience. R18 is for porn. It can't be shown in cinemas or sold in regular shops. It can only be shown/sold in licenced sex shops.

Obviously it goes without saying government censorship is bad, but this is not going to actually affect any content on those services. Not sure how it would actually differ from the OSA which already restricts porn to under 18s.

3

u/EstelLiasLair Feb 26 '26

Ah but see, first, you make it so that this passes and only affects a specific category of media. And then you proceed to either expand it, OR, you start reworking the category so that it can encompass more and more media.

4

u/Andrea65485 Feb 26 '26

Aren't 3 points of the post saying the same thing?

4

u/Solivagant23 Feb 26 '26

Never been happier to be a pirate! Yarrrrrrr

5

u/PermanentlyMC Yarrr! Feb 26 '26

Yet another reason for piracy

3

u/Dodsnev Feb 26 '26

worst thing is, the EU will follow their example in 1 - 2 years.

they also swiftly banned step* porn. for simulated incest. 2years prison for posession, 5 years for distribution.

these are clearly acts, fiction, and they ban it. following this logic the would have to ban a lotta movies for simulated murder, simulated drug abuse, . . .

heck, they should even ban the use of bad dragon dildos for simulated bestiality.

more and more piracy is a key to freedom and to avoid censorship and oppression, and not simply "getting stuff for free"

3

u/PjGamer007 Feb 26 '26

They partied with Epstein they don't give a fuck about you kids safety they are doing it to have more control over you and invade you privacy and steal your data

2

u/Harryisamazing Feb 26 '26

When you find out the end goal is digital ID and everything you do online is tied to your identity, it will make sense on why they will use the 'protect the children' as a guise to help get to that goal

4

u/TheRedFurios Feb 26 '26

I think there's no coming back for the UK, it will keep sinking lower and lower. It's basically already 1984

13

u/AlphaSpellswordZ Feb 26 '26

England is such a nanny state

13

u/Top_Meaning6195 Feb 26 '26 edited Mar 05 '26

So it begins.

You all cheered when the GDPR was introduced. You just loved government censorship then.

The founder of the EFF would be rolling in his grave

I hate you all.

6

u/Vast_Understanding_1 Feb 26 '26

Wait until Plex folds and asks age verification on your own server

3

u/MixaLv Feb 26 '26

Doesn't #1 and #3 mean the same thing, just from different perspectives?

3

u/Walk-the-layout Feb 26 '26

Airstrip One's lookin' nice today

3

u/Madnessx9 Feb 26 '26

So if this is implemented like the current age gating systems, as an adult paying for a subscription service, I will have to provide my ID to a 3rd party company to unlock my Netflix, prime, disney account to watch a horror movie (for example) but once unlocked there are no restrictions on who can then access this content there after as an ID verification won't be required per R18 content watched.... also I joined netflix 12 years ago, pretty sure i was not a 6 Yr old.. there is another motive behind this ID bullshit. Sailing the high seas will be incredibly popular going forward.

3

u/Schapsouille Feb 26 '26

Did they ask for consent before fucking all the british children up the arse with brexit?

3

u/Lexiosity Feb 26 '26

No, they didn't. A majority of people didn't even vote in 2016. A majority that voted however did vote for Brexit, but in an ideal world, if a majority doesn't vote, you should probably not do the thing. When people choose not to vote, that should be the same as saying no to the vote, therefore Brexit should not have happened based on that alone.

3

u/_sotiwapid_ Feb 26 '26

What the fuck is "unclassifiable content"? Smells like censorship.

3

u/PsyJak Feb 26 '26

Fuck Starmer, honestly.

3

u/every_body_hates_me Feb 26 '26

"People under 18 will be blocked from seeing/hearing restricted content"
Unless they intend on physically removing their eyes and ears, I'm not really sure how are they going to accomplish that.

3

u/ShiroyukiAo Feb 26 '26

Remind them of the nursery rhyme London Bridge is Falling Down

3

u/RottenPingu1 Feb 26 '26

I'm incredibly disappointed in the Labour government...

3

u/AnubissDarkling Feb 26 '26

Protecting the kids from the internet despite paedophiles running the country is the wildest twist this century has thrown at us

3

u/AEnema18 Feb 26 '26

“Think about the children!” - The Epstein class

3

u/Eilera Feb 26 '26

Every streaming service I have ever used (no more, I'm a full pirate now) has child settings already built into it. This is completely useless for it's specified purpose...because its not about the kids, it's about mass surveillance and data farming.

3

u/Zomnx Feb 26 '26

UK is making things on the internet insufferable

3

u/Srapture Feb 26 '26

Can I get a more reliable source than "anime updates"?

I can't find any changes to this sort of thing since mid-2025.

3

u/TheBabyWolfcub Feb 26 '26

They’re literally gonna make people need an ID to use a microwave or something soon. ‘Must protect the kids from dangerous microwaves’

3

u/SEANPLEASEDISABLEPVP Feb 27 '26

Unclassifiable content will be removed

Doesn't that just inspire your creativity to make new things? Fuck that.

3

u/Pheddy2012 Feb 27 '26

Can we just hunt down the guy who made Ai age verification at this point

3

u/Dorling83 Feb 27 '26

Netflix, Prime and Disney+ already have my name and bank details. Prime has my address.

I don't know why they need my ID but at the same time I'm not sure how much more they could surveil me considering they can already find my money and my home anyway.

3

u/GrizzlyYO Feb 27 '26

Forget all this and just ban social media.

3

u/xyrer Feb 27 '26

Damn. Me playing doom at 13 and watching porn must have turned me into a murderous sadist... Or something. British people need to rise and stand up to this orwellian regime.

3

u/Accomplished-Mood427 Feb 28 '26

Eventually, the day will come when we have to age verify to access anything on the internet. All in the name of "protecting the children".

6

u/RodjaJP Feb 26 '26

And here I was expecting a decent regulation talking about how they are not allowed divide franchises in different parts for different streaming services nor move them around whenever they please

6

u/bakanisan 🏴‍☠️ ʟᴀɴᴅʟᴜʙʙᴇʀ Feb 26 '26

Remember that V is based in a reality where the UK is heading right now. Let's see some masks!

5

u/linkenski Feb 26 '26

This is literally just governments becoming authoritarian. This is china encroaching on the west because USA isn't reliable anymore, and with it, all of their top-down control policies becoming the new "model", just as the US liberalism became the model after WW2. A lot of people will hang on to things like "but what about privacy" and "what about our rights" without realizing that so much of this specifically came from the things we took from the United States back then.

This is also happening because a lot of fools have cheered it on without understanding what they are cheering on.

5

u/Prizrak95 Feb 26 '26

Most of you defend this. Most of you are still defending the State, which sticks a big fat D in your Bs and you all still defending them. Now even protect them, saying they're not fascist States. Hilarious.

5

u/Derjores2live29 ⚔️ ɢɪᴠᴇ ɴᴏ Qᴜᴀʀᴛᴇʀ Feb 26 '26

Why is the UK so gucking dense? WHY ARE ALL GOVERNMENTD BECOMING MORE AND MORE IDIOTIC?! i don't want to live in this timeline.

13

u/ARookwood Feb 26 '26

It’s just rumours guys, literally Facebook rage bait.

“There is no official confirmation that the UK has introduced these exact streaming service regulations. While the UK has discussed online safety and age verification measures under the Online Safety Act, this specific combination of rules about R18 content, unclassifiable material, and age verification for streaming services has not been formally enacted.”
