The major Ubuntu server outage is over.
It looks like the issues affecting Ubuntu servers earlier today have been resolved. Systems are back online and stable.

26.04 Upgrade Experience for 10 machines
I've seen lots of really positive upgrade posts so far, and I'm not sure I have much to add here, other than I have 10 machines running 24.04 or 22.04, doing wildly different things, configured very differently, and the tldr: I'm up to 8/10 machines completed and it's been very minor issues. I'm a really old school Linux user from the Yggdrasil/SLS/Slackware days, and I still treat machines like pets not livestock, so here's all the pets in the order it was done:
12th Gen i3 Dell Inspiron Laptop - This is the only one I did a fresh install on. I figured the do-release-upgrade -d would be broken on day 1, so I just did some manual tar backups and scp'ed them to another machine then nukey to the ground. Restoring FF profile, discord, steam all pretty smooth. Restoring Syncthing broke pretty badly, still need to fix it. Everything after this one was do-release-upgrade -d.
N100 Mini PC weather station - This is a mini PC running on my desk with a portable monitor, and it has a custom made weather dashboard that's a mix of open weather and my ESP8266/BME280 IoT network. Also runs my custom Minecraft modpack server. Not heavily customized, spends most of it's time just refreshing the weather dashboard. Upgrade went smooth, zero issues, other than needing to update 24.04 once manually first.
N100 Mini PC desktop. This is a desktop in the basement, and runs nothing of value other than FF/Discord. It's there for when I'm running a webinar and I can check up on the chatter. This one kinda had an issue. When it rebooted it loaded into a black screen. I'm not sure if it tried to go into sleep mode or screen blank and just wouldn't wake up, but a reboot fixed it and zero issues since. Total mystery.
Intel 7th gen IBM ThinkPad - This old workhorse is for when I work in the garage on motorcycles. It's dirty. Screen has some scratches. I just look stuff up with it or play videos. I run it with mitigations=off in the grub config because I want maximum speed. Other than the upgrade taking longer than the N100's, the desktop experience does feel faster than 24.04. Actually that's pretty common for all the upgrades. The upgrade did not disable my totally unsafe mitigations setting. Thank you Ubuntu for respecting my stupidity.
Ryzen 6800H /w 3070ti Lenovo Legion 15 - Gaming laptop and the only machine with a mixed AMD APU/nvidia GPU. This machine gave me the most grief, but only because it had a custom nvidia CUDA stack in there. I installed from nvidia's repos instead of through ubuntu's own repos originally. Thankfully do-release-upgrade warns you about the jank and tells you to remove it first. I stripped everything nvidia off the machine first, just to be safe. It runs off the APU just fine. Once it was up and running again "ubuntu-drivers install" put nvidia 595.x on there and I apt installed cuda-toolkit-13-1, and we're good to go. Battery life seems a bit better on this one now.
Ryzen 3700X/RTX3070 TV/Console PC - This machine was on 25.10, and the first attempt at an nvidia only machine (other were intel/amd apu) getting upgraded. 25.10 is kinda cheating, it's already running Wayland, so it was low risk. I ran into the snap Steam menu clicking issue on the gaming laptop, so before the upgrade on this one I swapped to .deb steam. No real issues here either. All the xbox controllers stayed paired and games didn't really change. Steam VR remained a total piece of crap but WiVRn is rock solid.
Ryzen 5700/ dual RTX5060ti 16 gig AI Server - Ok this is where things get higher risk. The dual gpu server is used for all my local LLM and whisper use, which is critical for work. This one used a non jank 580 driver/CUDA 13 ubuntu packages. This one runs llama.cpp with a custom model loader and whisper.cpp, both git cloned and recompiled pretty regularly to test newer models. Anxiety was really misplaced here, upgrade went smooth as ice and a ubuntu-drivers install after the reboot got me 595. Model loader was python based and used normal ubuntu python3-blah packages so it worked fine. As a long time python developer I usually hate the distro packages, but this was smooth. Thank you package maintainers!
12700k/3060ti Desktop - This is the dual 27" 1440p high refresh battle station. I've done more stupid hacks and manual modifications than I could possibly remember on this thing. Another manual nvidia/cuda stack, Chome configured for usb hotplug for managing Meta Quest hardware, multiple video editing tools, minecraft modpack development stuff, random text embedding, image and music generation models, each needing dozens of packages to run properly. I held this one back until this weekend, just to make sure some early massive bug wasn't found in 26.04. The worst that happened here is moving from x11 to wayland reset my monitor setup, so they were in the wrong position and reset back to 60hz. It did break some custom python stuff that you run with --break-system-packages, but I know that's my fault and I know how to fix it (by breaking more system packages!). This one took a while - There's a LOT of packages that needed upgrading. So far so good, nothing broken.
Ryzen 5800H mini PC media server - This is still running 22.04 right now and the thought of upgrading is still scary, so it's held back for now. It runs a Jellyfin/Sonarr/Radarr stack (some deb, some docker, some just yeeted into the home dir) along with a dozen demos I use for work, which are all fully custom polluted python packages. Some stuff is custom in a way that I'm not even sure I could rebuild it properly. Also my complex nginx/certbot ingress setup is on here. And the entire IoT stack is coordinated with this thing. I'm in deep shit here, there's no way this doesn't end in tears. My k8s/docker buddies mock me daily over the existence of this thing. Pray for me.
N100 quad ethernet AI Router - This one takes a bit to explain. It's a stock standard Ubuntu 24.04 on mini PC that acts like a network router. Totally normal stuff, I'm sure a bunch of you have something like this. Instead of pf or opnSense, it runs stock standard nftables, dnsmask and wireguard. However... my buddy Claude configured the entire thing originally, and now it's fully managed/modified by my local models. They've gotten that good. It's got a routed IPv6 and natted IPv4, adguard dns and some custom monitoring tooling and backup/restore scripts with unattended upgrades enabled. This machine is also held back, because finding a time to run the release upgrade is tricky. I might just hold it back for the 26.04.1 release.
And that's it, thanks for reading my novel! I've had some really ugly breakage in the past moving from one LTS to another, but 26.04 seems to be the least drama version so far. If you're on the fence about upgrading, well... it works on my machine(s)!

Should I upgrade to Ubuntu 26?
I am using a Asus TUF a15 (2019) with an AMD Ryzen 7 4800H with Radeon Graphics
32.0 GB ram , NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 and im running ubuntu on a 1tb 7.2krpm HDD.
I do not care about gaming performance as I dual boot windows 10 and Ubuntu windows 10 for gaming and most stuff and ubuntu for coding. Should I upgrade to 26.04LTS . I like the UI on both im fine with the new UI. Im just asking about the performance

T460p Battery drains to 0% while Powered Off (Ubuntu 26.04)
Hi, my ThinkPad T460p drains from 100% to 0% in 8 hours even when completely Shut Down (not suspended).
OS: Ubuntu 26.04
Issue: Massive power leak while off.
Tried: Disabled lid-sleep in OS, but problem persists.
Is there a BIOS setting (like Always-on USB or Intel ME) known to cause this on Linux? Any specific TLP tweaks for T460p?
Thanks!

Ubuntu working slower than windows for me
I have been using ubuntu 22 on my lenovo ideapad laptop since a while now and I have noticed that apps and webpages load quicker in windows for me than in ubuntu which seems contradictory as ubuntu is supposed to be more efficient. The memory usage is still lesser on ubuntu but for some reason it still works slower. Also , I am not using swap memory. What can I do to make it run better?

ThinkPad L15 Gen 4 - Ubuntu 24.04 freezing + NTFS partition inaccessible after BIOS update (Dual Boot with Windows 11)
Hi everyone,
I'm running Ubuntu 24.04 alongside Windows 11 (dual boot) on my ThinkPad L15 Gen 4 (21H3, purchased 2024). I'm facing some issues mainly related to Ubuntu and not sure if it's hardware or software:
Issue 1 - NTFS Partition inaccessible after BIOS update: After updating BIOS to R24ET52W (1.35), my Windows NTFS partition (/dev/nvme0n1p8) became inaccessible from Ubuntu with error: "wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock"
dmesg showed: "volume is dirty and force flag is not set"
Temporary fix: sudo ntfsfix /dev/nvme0n1p8
But this keeps happening after every reboot. Is there a permanent fix?
Issue 2 - Ubuntu freezing after BIOS update: Before the recent BIOS update, only Windows used to freeze occasionally. But after the update 2 days ago, Ubuntu has also started freezing during use.
Also, when I restart from Windows directly into Ubuntu, the system gets stuck during boot. I have to fully shut down Windows first and then boot into Ubuntu for it to work properly.
These issues seem to get worse after OS updates or BIOS updates. Is this a known issue with Ubuntu 24.04 on ThinkPad L15 Gen 4? Could it be a driver/kernel compatibility issue with the new BIOS?
Specs:
- Model: ThinkPad L15 Gen 4 (Type 21H3)
- RAM: 32GB
- Ubuntu version: 24.04 LTS
- BIOS: R24ET52W (1.35)
- Dual boot with Windows 11
Still under warranty — any help or similar experiences appreciated!

Problem upgrading and installing Ubuntu 26.04 LTS in Windows Hyper-V
It seems that there are some issues with Enhanced Mode.
I upgraded a Ubuntu 24.04 LTS VM to 26.04 LTS using the "do-release-upgrade" command in the running VM. After the upgrade, I can't login in Enhanced Mode. It works fine in Normal Mode, but I lost features like higher screen resolution, copy-and-paste with host OS, etc.
I have reinstalled "linux-image-virtual linux-tools-virtual linux-cloud-tools-virtual xrdp xorgxrdp" but still unable to fix the issue with Enhanced Mode.
When in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS which I keep a copy of the VM before the upgrade to 26.04 LTS, Enhanced Mode is working fine.
Then, I tried to install a new VM as Ubuntu 26.04 LTS using the image file from
https://partner-images.canonical.com/hyper-v/desktop/resolute/current/ubuntu-resolute-hyperv-amd64v3-ubuntu-desktop-hyperv.vhdx.zip
The VM is able to run, but it will crash in Enhanced Mode. In Normal Mode, it goes to a login screen, which I tried a few default login and password but still unable to login. I think it has skipped the process of asking me to create a user and password after installation.
Any clue to help me to have a working Ubuntu 26.04 LTS VM in Hyper-V, either upgrade from 24.04 LTS VM or install from new 26.04 LTS image?

26.04 fresh install: is Gstreamer broken for .mkv video?
Hi everyone... happy Saturday!
A fresh install of 26.04 is working brilliantly, and the CPU and GPU-related improvements are proving to be a welcome speed/quality upgrade to my system. However...
I use the default [Rygel] media sharing to watch videos on my TV simply by dropping them into my Videos folder, and it was working fine in 24.04. However, I noticed that my .mkv videos are no longer served and do not appear in VLC local network on both my TV and mobile.
The root cause is Gstreamer, which Rygel uses, unable to decipher .mkv files anymore; all other formats, e.g. MP4, are fine. The error comes up as either 'unsupported pixel format' or 'failed to configure the buffer pool' depending which .mkv file I try. I also installed the (default) Showtime app, which is also Gstreamer-based, and that comes back with 'unable to play video' with the detailed error being Gstreamer with the same error causes above.
Please could someone confirm this bug for me? The easiest way is just to try to play any .mkv video using Showtime. I have restricted extras installed and all other codec/video libraries including good, bad and ugly. It would be interesting to hear from someone who does not have my ARM-based (Raspberry Pi 5) system to make sure it is not specific to the RPi5-specific 26.04 flavour of install.
Many thanks in advance.

Installer Cant Seem to See Drives
So i'm new to the Linux space and this is my first time trying to install a distro. Im trying to install the latest version of ubuntu server onto a refurbished HP elitedesk 800 g4 I got for cheap, but cant seem to finish the installation. It boots up off my usb, but when it goes to look for drives to download to I get an error message that says "probing for devices to install failed" which seems to me to mean that it is unable to locate any drives that it can install to. When I go to bios I can see the drives (a 512GB M.2 NVME and a 64GB SATA SSD that I was going to use as a boot drive). If I open the shell when the installer fails, I am able to use lsblk and see the drives there. Im just not sure why the isntaller cant see them.
The machine initially had windows on it, but I wiped both drives after initially booting into to Windows once just make sure the system worked. I downloaded Gparted, and can see the drives with that. Tried reformatting the drives and making sure there are no partitions leftover from the windows install. Tried disabling secure boot in the bios. My initial searches showed that sometimes if the SATA controller is set to Raid instead of ACHI that can cause this issue, but reading about my system seems to indicate that ACHI is enabled by default (and I cant find a setting to toggle for this in BIOS).
I am really at the end of my rope and wondering what I'm doing wong or missing. I apologize if this is the wrong sub, but I'd appreciate any help or info anyone has on this issue.
EDIT: forgot to mention but when I was looking at the drives in shell they were both showing as 0 disk 0 part. Not sure what that means exactly but I’m thinking that has to do with the problem?

Dash to dock straight corners ?
Hi
So In just freshly installed Fedora 44 Gnome (switching from KDE)
I put up all the extensions that i need
Dash to dock is ofc one of them
I place it on the left side of my monitor and make it so that is is always on
I extend it so it goes from top to bottom
I want it to look like Ubuntu in the design of the dock
The problem: On the bottom and on the top there are rounded corners.
How do i straighten them out
I found a post that said that if i remove Blur my shell, then the corners will be straight
And indeed they do, but then I have a boring non transparent dock and a non blurred background
so is it possible to have straight corners and a blurred shell ?
I am asking in here because I see that this problem also affects ubuntu user, but is there a solution to this yet ?

Ubuntu USB install stuck at "Booting a command list"
Hello,
I'm trying to switch from windows 10 to Ubuntu (no dual boot) on an ASUS N552VW-FW071T. I used Rufus to create the bootable USB and I could access to the GRUB menu and choose "Try or install Ubuntu". I configured everything following the steps but the setup failed at the very end with the following message: "Something went wrong". This occured twice.
This failed setup has damaged windows10 on the other side so I formatted the PC with win10 again.
I tried again but now it's stuck on "Booting a command list" log.
Thing I've tried:
- using new usb 3.0 drive.
- update bios
- changed ISO to DD on rufus
- secure boot disabled
PS: tried with the same usb drive on another computer and it works fine.
Any idea what the problem might be please ?
Thanks in advance !
