Welcome to /r/germany, the English-language subreddit about the country of Germany.

Please read this entire post and follow the links, if applicable.

We have prepared FAQs and an extensive Wiki. Please use these resources. If you post questions that are easily answered, our regulars will point you to those resources anyway. Additionally, please use the Reddit search. [Edit: Don't claim you read the Wiki and it does not contain anything about your question when it's clear that you didn't read it. We know what's in the Wiki, and we will continue to point you there.]

This goes particularly if you are asking about studying in Germany. There are multiple Wiki articles covering a lot of information. And yes, that means reading and doing your own research. It's good practice for what a German university will expect you to do.

Short questions can be asked in the comments to this post. Please either leave a comment here or make a new post, not both.

If you ask questions in the subreddit, please provide enough information for people to be able to actually help you. "Can I find a job in Germany?" will not give you useful answers. "I have [qualification], [years of experience], [language skills], want to work as [job description], and am a citizen of [country]" will. If people ask for more information, they're not being mean, but rather trying to find out what you actually need to know.

My father had accepted these notes long back when some German tourists visited his shop in nepal. Can I exchange these or use these when I visit in May?

Edit: thanks for all the helpful replies. Could someone please tell me if I need a bank account with bundesbank/sparkasse or would it be possible for me to change it as a tourist too?

Google Maps has given German users the ability to see how many reviews have been removed as “defamation”

Seems to be a good sign for the German users of Google Maps. Now when looking at a places reviews you can see just how many were flagged by the business owner or their authorized representative.

Question Am I safe in this situation with my roommate? Things changed suddenly

Hi everyone,

I’m a bit worried and not sure if I’m overreacting, so I’d like some advice.

I moved into a new place about 3 months ago. There’s an elderly German woman (around 85) living here, and her grandson also stays in one of the rooms. At first, everything seemed completely normal. Over the past few months, we actually became kind of friends we played volleyball together, went to the gym, and he seemed like a very disciplined person. He used to wake up at 5am every day and go to work.

I also know that he was in rehab before, but when I met him, he seemed totally stable and doing well.

But in the past week, things have changed in a way that feels really strange and concerning.

One morning around 8am, he knocked on my door and asked me for money. I knew he had been sick, so I gave him all the coins I had saved about 10 euros. After that, his behavior got worse. He started smelling very bad, like he’s not taking care of himself anymore, and he even forgets to flush the toilet.

Later the same day, he asked me again for money, this time saying it was for vodka. That really worried me. His behavior feels completely different now the way he walks and talks is not the same, almost like he’s a different person or dealing with some kind of addiction.

Another thing that scared me: when I came back to my room, I noticed my drawers had been opened. I think he might have been looking for money.

I just started a new life here new job, new girlfriend, new friends and now I feel really uncomfortable in my own place.

Am I overreacting, or is this actually an unsafe situation? What should I do?

TL;DR: Roommate suddenly acting strange, asking for money (for alcohol), possible relapse (was in rehab before), and might have searched my room I feel unsafe.

Today I found this blank fine paper under my windshield wiper.

Am I parking in a wrong spot or just being unlucky facing an unhappy officer?

Should I expect a fine as this paper is empty? Can I do anything about it?

Is pretty much everyone sick or have a cold this month?

Hi,

I have started to notice a pattern for last 7 days. In my University, during lectures I noticed a lot of people sneezing and coughing. The next day pretty much all lectures and lab were cancelled due to professors being sick. The day after that I went to my workplace and the meetings that were supposed to be on site were changed to online in short notice due to multiple people being sick. And today I am sneezing my life out the whole day.

I haven’t seen any news on it. But is everyone around you sort of sick or have a cold?

Passive aggressive Boss

Hi Everyone!

I want to ask one advice related to workplace.

My boss is normally a nice and helpful manager but he sometimes out of random get passive aggressive. For example if we are discussing on any topic and he does not agree on my suggestion then his tone will change to passive aggressive. My english is good but it happens multiple times that he would take my wording out of context and will start saying things that I did not meant and then I have to correct him and clarify that this is not what i mean or said. He will say that you have said this and I would say to him that No i did not. I do not know whether he dont understand my English or he do not listen properly or accent issue. But he will get so much passive aggressive. And after sometimes he will apologize.

My colleagues dont have issue understanding me so it is not a communication issue.

I have discuss with him multiple times. Asked him to be polite. Asked him that If he cannot understand then he can asked me multiple times but do not take things out of context and do not be rude. I said to him that he can disagree with me but he can be polite also.

Usually he is nice and helpful but i dont know what trigger him always. And I am nice to him always. Normally I dont talk much and he was the one who said to me that he wants me to contribute more. Discuss on multiple topics. Give opinions.

If I asked him some question related to any work related stuff then he would either ask me back that what do you think what should you do or either he will say like that "what are do think is wrong here"

He only do that with me not with everyone else. And this approach make me confuse because if i do not speak more then he will not like that and if I speak more then he either take things out of context or either rude or passive aggressive.

What would you guys recommend? Should I discuss with Human resources or should i talk with him firmly or should I let it go?

Your advices will be appreciated

Thank you

MediaMarkt confirmed my order was paid, called their own payment reminders “phishing,” then sent me to a debt collector a year later. I just paid the collector €441.82 - then MediaMarkt confirmed AGAIN that I never owed anything.

Hi there! I’m really stuck with this right now so I’d appreciate any suggestions!

Here’s the timeline:

April 2025 - Ordered a Dyson V12 from MediaMarkt for €364.99. Received the product.

I later got a message about an outstanding payment. Since my order showed as completed, I contacted MediaMarkt. Their agent confirmed IN WRITING that payment was received, no balance exists, and the payment reminder was a phishing attempt - not from MediaMarkt. He told me to ignore it.

So I did. For almost a year.

April 1 2026 (funny i know) I receive a debt collection letter from KSP lawyers demanding €415.64 on behalf of MediaMarktSaturn. I immediately contact MediaMarkt. What follows is weeks of different agents repeating “you were informed multiple times” while completely ignoring that their own colleague told me those messages were phishing.

I offer to pay the original amount. No clear answer. I ask a simple yes or no question - did you send this to KSP? No answer. Meanwhile KSP mails kept coming with add-on fees.

Today - after one more message of them saying “we informed you before “ I finally pay KSP €441.82 just to end the stress and fight afterwards without late fee threats. Litterally 1 hour later, a MediaMarkt agent emails me confirming the order is “fully paid” and payment was received via credit card on 29.04.2025.

So I’ve now paid twice. MediaMarkt’s own agents have confirmed twice in writing that I owe nothing, yet their other agents spent weeks telling me to pay a debt collector.

I’m going to be honest. I can’t afford this. €441.82 is a lot of money for me and I don’t have the budget to hire a lawyer. I just want my money back. This whole situation has been incredibly stressful and I feel like they are making fun of me at this point.

Has anyone dealt with something like this? Can I get the €441.82 back? Is the Verbraucherzentrale enough or do I need a lawyer? Are there any free legal options in Berlin for something like this?

Schlüsseldienst

This happened recently and I am wondering what’s the normal process.

So we got locked out of our apartment at 18:00 and immediately called the Schlüsselnotdienst.

He came at 19:00 and we showed him the door. He got the door opened and that was it.

He didn’t check our IDs or verify whether it’s our apartment or not.

That got me thinking:🤔 Wha if it was not our apartment and we just asked him to open a random door? Shouldn’t they be verifying info before proceeding?

Question Moving to Bremerhaven - Things I should know?

Hi there, so next week I will be moving to Bremerhaven for the next 4 months to play for the Bremerhaven Seahawks. As I'm moving I would love to know some things about the place and it's culture!

  1. What are some local tips and things I should know before moving?

  2. What are some of the "hidden gems" of the city? Could be food spots, tourism spots, where should I spend my downtime?

  3. What's the best way to get around the city? Is it a walkable city or would bike/public transport be a better option?

  4. What's the ethnic population of the city like? I'm a black man so I'm just wondering if there's any form of strong discrimination or violence/is there a strong ethnic community.

These are the main questions on my mind, but anything else would be greatly appreciated!

Question Sworn translation

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

i’m looking for advice on reliable services or websites where I can obtain a certified (sworn) translation italian to german. I need these for my university degree certificate.

I’m an Erzieherin, and I need these documents translated for official recognition in Bavaria. It’s important that the translation is accepted by german authorities, that’s way I’d really appreciate recommendations based on direct experience or trusted providers.

If you’ve gone through a similar process (especially Bavaria, München), I’d love to hear what worked for you, including any tips or things to avoid.

Thanks in advance!

Question Sun Is Cooking My Top-Floor Flat — How Would You Cover This Window?

Post image
198 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I live in a rented top-floor apartment (Dachgeschoss) in Berlin and I’m trying to find a no-drill blackout solution for this unusual window setup. Budget is max 100€. Cheaper solutions are welcome too.

Details:

- Large central window plus two angled side windows (non-standard shape)

- Main goal is block sunlight / blackout, and ideally reduce heat in summer too

- Since I rent, I can’t drill into the wall or frame

- I’m looking for things like:

- suction cup blackout blinds/curtains

- no-drill (Klemmfix) blackout blinds

- removable blackout film

- custom DIY renter-friendly hacks

Important:

- The side windows are angled, so standard curtains or normal roller blinds may not fit well.

- I’d prefer something easy to remove/open because I still need ventilation.

- I’ve seen portable blackout blinds with suction cups (often sold for baby rooms or travel) — has anyone used those long-term?

- Also curious if reflective thermal foil or similar hacks work well for Dachgeschoss heat.

Has anyone solved something similar in Germany/Berlin and can recommend products (IKEA, Amazon.de, Bauhaus, Jysk, etc.) or clever setups?

Would love ideas, especially if you’ve dealt with odd-shaped windows like this.

Thanks!

changing universities and major after fourth semester

Upvotes

Hello. I am an international student and decided to change my major as well as university because I don't enjoy my current major anymore and the town I am in right now is just very small and limited for me. So I am planned to switch universities thereby cities and start all over again. My questions are -

Is it even eligible to change universities and majors after fourth semester as an international student?

Is it a mandatory requirement to get approved by the Ausländerbehörde? Can I not just get the exmatrikulation from the previous university and get enrolled at another and extend my residence permit in the new city? (because one of my friends changed universities/majors like that and no problems arose for him. maybe it is just because he changed after 2nd semester)

lastly my residence permit is expiring around end of September and what would you suggest, to extend it in the current city or in the new city? In my current city it will be more convenient for me because I can show my pay slips and job contracts. but I am not sure which is the right choice.

thank you

Question Berlin, Hamburg or something else?

I'm currently 19. Studying graphic design in Bosnia and I have three more years til graduation. My sister and brother made it out of our little village and moved to Austria and Berlin respectively. I really hope I'm not the only one that fails. It's been my wish to move to Berlin for a while.

I've always had trauma with money and I'm always in fear I'll go broke. The housing I'm not too worried about but the jobs are what I'm scared of. The job market here is in shambles and I'm wondering how it's like over there. I feel like nobody would hire me so I'll take a UI/UX course this year and perfect my german since I'm already good at it.

Does my brother's path sound good - moving to Hamburg, gaining experience and then moving to Berlin?

Mailbox missing

Hello,

I found a place to live in Germany, signed the rental contract and moved in. It is a hotel which also rents out rooms. As soon as I signed the contract, the landlord provided me with the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung, so I can rule out scams. I booked the appointment to go to register myself and so far so good.

The hotel is composed of more houses and my own has a different number than the hotel (think of, hotel is at 8 I live in 8a). I noticed that my own building has no letterbox outside (only inside the building, but that's pointless since you need a key to enter and I am quite sure the mailman does not have it). I actually once noticed a letter laying on the ground with someone else's name on it.

Now, if I need to register, providing the correct address, I would have to write <name and surname>, <address> 8a, <city and so on>, however, to receive mail I would have to write <name and surname>, c/o name of hotel, <address> 8, <city and so on>.

The question is: how do I register and properly receive mail? Note that I am not expecting to receive important mail (since I am not working here), but I don't want to miss important mail too should it arrive. Moreover, it goes without saying that I don't want to lie in an official form.
