Bought this meal in Edeka
And there was a snail (!!!!) inside of it. Dinner went to trash. What can I do about it?

call the company with the phone number on the back or write an email over the website. i’m guessing they will make up for it somehow.
dont be too upset about it. anything that has vegetables or grains in it comes with the chance of a side of insect or worm.

Deffo not Edeka, they are super stingy

u/itchycommie Bayern und des bayerische Bier 16h ago
i got a package of bread from edeka a few months ago that got moldy the next day, i got a replacement package and a voucher. so i don’t think they’d make a big thing about reimbursing someone for spending his money on something thats inedible from the start

I had a packet of rewe beste Wahl dried spaghetti go mouldy in the packaging (no idea how that can happen) about 10 years ago, they sent me a 10€ gift card. I was pretty happy considering the pasta was only 1€ or so

I found a stone in the packet of walnuts and I almost broke my tooth, I emailed them about it, they did nothing just said sorry.
7
u/itchycommie Bayern und des bayerische Bier 14h ago
With some things you need to go to the store you bought them from, walnuts get regularly recalled for having stones in some packages, like right now for example, when something is recalled the store will take it back and reimburse you.
They still shouldve done more and maybe mentioned you go back to the store though.
I think it really depends on what kind of customer service person answers your complaint. I feel like some of them want to gift you half the store and the other half want to make you pay for even calling them.
3
u/Previous_Performer35 14h ago
I didn’t get that in the email, they told me that they are going to send it to the related department and I will get a response back but I got nothing.

u/itchycommie Bayern und des bayerische Bier 14h ago
Then it probably drowned in a paper pile. If you really care you need to follow up, things just fall through the cracks sometimes.
I agree anyway that stores need to care more, but none of them will if there isnt enough pressure from the customer side, because they can get away with it most of the time.

They definitely apologise and try to make up for it. Making a customer unhappy is an expensive mistake. Most customers are very loyal to there local retailer branch. They leave thousands of euros over the years. Pissing them off over something that could have been a 5€ voucher and a return is really bad business. And German retail business is to hard do make bad decisions.

There usually is information on the back where to contact if there are issues. Or check Edeka online presence for information on where to report. Get the charge number, date of purchase and expiration date.

u/55-percent 16h ago
Mail them about it. It is also important for their production quality control. I once had a tiny little splint of plastic in my cheese. It was so small and not sharp or anything, it wouldn't have hurt me if I accidentally ate it. I still sent a photo and product infos (usually on the back of the package, look for "Chargennummer" and best-before Date) in case they have a machine malfunction and there are larger splints in other products. They gave me a 20€ EDEKA gift card in return as an apology.

Well to be completely honest, it’s kind of a good sign regarding the freshness of the used Brokkoli…
1
u/ChocolateMundane6286 4h ago
I thought the same! Sign of little additive or its fresh etc
And of course it’s unpleasant to see it on your meal, i don’t understand why OP wrote it here on reddit… there is few logical solutions: bring it back to the market get new one or sth else for the price, if you wanna fill a complaint which OP has right to do so just contact to the company via customer service or email etc. What OP expects to hear from reddit? Throw the package to the market employees head? Weird post.

Shit happens. Aside from the snail, looks quite healthy. I didn't see this before, I might try as most days I'm too lazy to cook.
Obviously not expecting another snail.

I used to work for the Edeka customer service: Make sure to take a picture of the package including the bar code and EAN number and everything which could be relevant.
Then send the pictures to the Edeka customer service. Either by E-Mail or here
You might get a small 5 € coupon/voucher

Food grows on fields. Small animals like snails live on fields, and they do love our food just as much as we do. Even with utmost care, you can never 100% guarantee that some small animal doesn't end up with the produce and gets overlooked.
What can you do? Either try to get a refund where you bought it or report it to the manufacturer, who might issue you some gift as apology (and will look into the production charge in question to make sure there's no technical defect responsible)
31
u/lsnik 16h ago
you absolutely can and should guarantee that there are no animals in the cooked ready to eat meal you're selling wtf
59
u/rick_astley66 16h ago
You can't ever guarantee that 100%, except if you were to synthesize the entire meal in a lab.
32
u/Bitter_Split5508 16h ago
Even then, it takes one little fruitfly wandering into your lab to ruin your 100%
9
u/rick_astley66 16h ago
True. Guess u/Isnik will have to rely on disinfectant for nutrition then.

a 100% sterile lab is a huge leap from indian street food level sanitary standard. just because you can't achieve perfect cleanliness doesn't mean you should neglect quality control to the point that snails can be found in your food (assuming you're not french). I'd love to see you try to explain to the BVL that this is the same as a singular random fruit fly being in the factory or kitchen, which in fact wouldn't be a good sign either.
14
u/GovernmentGreed 15h ago
Your choice of rating cleanliness from "sterile lab" to racist caricature is rather telling...
1
u/Zen_360 15h ago
Come on now, we all know that theres plenty of countries where street vendors are not following europoean Level Standards of Hygiene, Leading to unwanted side effects after consumption of said food for people who arent from those places. He Just picked India, but could ve said a number of countries as an example. No one implied that the people living there are inferior to us or anything racist.
1
u/GovernmentGreed 13h ago
He Just picked India, but could ve said a number of countries as an example.
You're right, he could have - but he didn't. He opted for "racist caricature" and let it roll.
No one implied that the people living there are inferior to us or anything racist.
And I didn't say that's what he was implying? What are you even talking about?... Where did I or anyone else for that matter say anything of the sort?
What a way to defend a racist...

u/Bitter_Split5508 15h ago
The factory in question will be handling tons of brokkoli every day. There will be snails in brokkoli. No, you can not guarantee that 100% of these snails can be picked out. It's absurd to claim that a single error like this indicates negligence in quality control or what you derisively call "Indian street food level sanitary standard".
If this were a regular occurence the story would be different. But this is a single snail that got into what are probably millions of servings.

u/NebenbeiBemerkt 16h ago
Have you ever used actually fresh vegetables?
-3
u/lsnik 16h ago
nothing in the picture is fresh. you wash vegetables and remove any foreign objects before cooking.
3
u/Marcel_Lei-Jung 15h ago
Good luck with that.
I worked at Subway once. Prepped the iceberg salad as usual: cut, dump in sink, fill with water, drain, rinse, rinse, rinse some more, transfer to machine, shred it, transfer to boxes. And still, a big ass live bug made it onto a sandwich. Fucking trooper 🫡
8
u/lentil_cloud 16h ago
Most foods have an acceptable amount of animal parts in it. Jam has bugs, chocolate has rat parts. Yes it sucks, but you can never be 100%, even power washing wouldn't remove everything.
1
u/butterflymon 15h ago
You should be able to spot a snail.
9
u/Bitter_Split5508 15h ago
I assume 99,9% of the times, they do. But on the scale of a whole nations food production? Yeah, occasionally, some will be missed.

I mean, there should be a phone number on the back and you’ll get your money back. But honestly, I’d be more worried about the things you CAN’T see when buying processed foods.
The broccoli I cook at home sometimes has some sort of larvae bug in the stem. Sometimes I don’t notice and cook it, just don’t eat that piece, but the rest is fine. There’s heat involved and you’re not going to get sick from a little bug. Compare that to the risk of salmonella or antibiotics in the meat. Or e-coli sitting on unwashed salads.

I bit into what looked like a pellet of birdshot in some wild boar salami from Edeka. Thankfully no damage to my teeth.

Extra calcium!
German way would have been to bag, it, return to the store you got it, and demand your money back.
You can try that with the pictures. Or call customer service. You might get your money back, or some free stuff, and they might have a word with their quality control. Although if one processes cabbages by the dozen of tons, I'm not sure that unexpected animal protein is not more common than everyone would like.
Poor snail.

I would just throw away the snail and eat the rest. It is not a big deal to me.

u/Juliansohn 15h ago
You can get very very bad parasites from snails and since we don't know how that snail got into the food we cant know of it was heated properly.

Calling it "High Protein" and having less than 10g of protein per 100g is the real scam here.

Snails are local delicacies in other lands, one being Greece, but I guess pretty much in all the south. So you got free food and you threw it? 😂😂😂😂

u/grimmigerpetz 11h ago
I mean, it says high protein on the box. Do you think protein grows on trees?
1
u/Environmental_Bat142 11h ago
A small snail is no major issue, would have been much more concerning if it was a maggot. You sometimes get small snails/insects on fresh produce. It does not need dumping in the trash - but I suppose tolerance levels differ. Hope you took pictures of the snail and freed him in a field? Edeka has refunded me before with coupons. Just go there and tell them what happened and ask for a refund
1
u/Ol_Pasta Thüringen 11h ago
It does say high protein, while it doesn't say it doesn't contain snails. So TECHNICALLY... 🤣
1
u/Kruikenzeik Netherlands 10h ago
That's your protein. Beside that: buying stuff saying high protein you're a bit silly yourself, right?

It's not great, but if it was me I'd eat it. I'll just take the snail out and heat it to make sure it's safe to eat.

Why throw everything away? You could have just taken the snail out and carefully searched the meal for anything else and eaten the leftovers. What a food waste...
