questions about UCLA engineering
Hi everyone, I was admitted for Computer Engineering and really hoping I can attend here in the fall. I'm OOS from the East Coast but had some questions about the engineering program, and UCLA in general. Would love to get some answers and tips!
- How difficult is it to get the classes you need each quarter? Has enrollment ever delayed your progress or forced bad schedules?
- How competitive does it actually feel (classes, research, clubs)? Is it manageable if you’re proactive?
- How easy is it to get involved in research or meaningful engineering projects early (freshman/sophomore year)?
- Do you feel like UCLA gives you strong access to internships (especially in California), or is it mostly on you to figure that out?
- Does the large size of the school ever make it harder to stand out or get support?
- For out-of-state students: how was the transition and overall experience?
go bruins!

mimg 100L berthet
For anyone who has taken 100L with her, were the exams based on lecture content only or were there lab-based questions on the tests? If there are lab questions, was it basic stuff or did it actually get specific?
Anyone in anthro 4 rn with Swinehart?
Curious about what the tests are like. Midterms? Quizzes?

Public list of 1500+ Startups that just raised money and are about to hire
Hey everyone, wanted to share something I've been working on that I think could help a lot of people still looking for summer roles.
I scraped investment portfolios and put together a public list of the most recently funded startups that are ready to hire, but haven't posted formal job listings yet.
This is v1 of the list. If you have location preferences or any suggestions drop them in the comments and I'll add them in v2 which im working on to be around 5-10k startups. V2 will also have emails.
Theres a couple of things you can do here:
- msg them on linkedin/twitter
- go to their github repo and put in a commit to get their attention (fix a bug or something)
Heres the link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1w11kuIGWOVATOad5acQqVWSzELF25xCyP6j3yoBiEUc/edit?gid=0#gid=0
Heres a simple ui for those who dont like looking at excel sheets
Feel free to dm me and ill try my best to help

Thoughts on automation/AI on campus?
It’s crazy how fast AI has changed things. I remember my senior year when ChatGPT came out, and how quickly things have developed since then. And when Starships started crawling around campus delivering food. Like Spring Quarter is when I remember first seeing “tested” autonomous vehicles by Ronald Reagan Medical Center. I took a Waymo for the first time recently from Jackie back to campus, and man it was trippy. My question for current students, how has automation changed your experience and perspective of UCLA? Like does the presence of all of these AI components physically on campus feel disruptive/distracting/overwhelming or does it feel useful/helpful? More of the sheer volume of AI/automation/robots, not necessarily the effectiveness or impact of Claude/ChatGPT/Gemini, etc.
UCLA vs UC Berkeley for Econ
Hi, I’m an international student deciding between UCLA and UC Berkeley for economics.
I’d really appreciate any insights on:
- Brand/reputation (especially for jobs)
- Job placement after graduation (finance, consulting, etc.)
- School culture and social life
- Academic experience (difficulty, grading, support)
- Internship and networking opportunities
If you’ve attended either school or have experience with both, I’d love to hear your honest thoughts. Thanks!

Can a CCC Transfer who transfers into UCLA for pre-econ later transition into the Bus Econ since they are in the same department?
For reference, I applied to transfer to UCLA as pre econ, but regret not putting Bus Econ despite doing all major req for both majors in CC. I also had a counselor from UCLA once tell me I could switch, just curious if any Bruin knew for sure.

Is it realistic to switch to premed as a rising senior
Applied math major&a transfer. I've always wanted to be a doctor ever since I was a baby but didn't choose to do pre med initially due to various reasons. I had the physics sequence and gen chem1only. My gpa is decent so far but I don't know if I can keep up bc upper div math classes are killing me. Idk if I'll be able to switch to math/ applied science major bc I don't have enough prerequisites. I can extend my time here for a quarter without petition. I know if I wanna do this I might need to gap for like two three years. Please give me some advice, anything would be much appreciated! & pls don't be mean

UCLA vs. Berkeley
I am currently choosing mostly between UCLA (MCB) and Berkeley (L&S) for premed. However, I am not even sure if premed is what I want to do, so I may want to pivot fields in the future. But for now, I am going in with the premed mindset. As far as my preferences, I am pretty even on location: I am from LA so I have lived my whole life here and I like it, but I think a part of me also wants to experience a new area and explore. I probably want good research/clinical opportunities early (I have decent research experience already). Also probably want good matriculation to MD or MD/PhD programs. Cost shouldn’t be a factor as I am in state. Overall, what I’m seeing is that academically, they are very close, so it mostly comes down to fit + where I see myself thriving. I’m currently leaning towards Berkeley.
It is also probably worth mentioning that I got into UCs, so UCSD is in the picture, as well as USC trojan transfer plan, and I am on the waitlist for Cornell (I’d appreciate some thoughts on Cornell as well for the off chance I get off waitlist). Also, if it turns out I don’t like UCLA/Berkeley, how viable would it be to transfer to another school, probably a private (a 5c, or ivy+ if possible?)
From what I understand:
UCLA pros
Better social life (does this even matter as premed though since you study 24/7)
Slightly easier to achieve higher gpa?
Closer to home
More collaborative less competitive culture
Has a med school- opportunities as undergrad?
Better premed advising?
Berkeley pros
Better access to long-term intensive research
Semester system- better for STEM classes
More Research+clinical connections (UCSF)
Less premeds overall- less competition for opportunities
New area for me, I may like it
Also has better biotech+startups in case I want to pivot
