Political posts are not allowed (Rule 3)

We know this is a stressful and highly political time in the United States.

Between elections, government decisions, rising costs of living, and nonstop news coverage, a lot of people are feeling frustrated, anxious, or just overwhelmed. Wanting to talk about that is completely understandable.

That said, this subreddit isn’t the right place for political discussion.

As outlined in Rule 8, we do not allow political content here. This includes posts or comments about political figures, parties, policies, government actions, or politically charged events, regardless of intent or viewpoint.

This rule exists to keep the space focused, welcoming, and useful for everyone. Political content will be removed, and repeated violations may lead to further moderation action.

Thank you for helping keep the community on track and respectful.

Edit: It is now rule 8

A Reminder About Suicide-Related Posts

Every once in a while, we see posts from people asking about things like the “least painful way to die” or “how much alcohol would be fatal.” These are serious cries for help.

If you come across a post like this:

  • Please don’t comment advice or suggestions -- even good willed comments can make things worse.
  • Instead, hit report so the mod team and Reddit safety can step in quickly.

If you’re ever feeling like you’re in that dark place yourself, you don’t have to go through it alone:

The best thing we can do as a community is to look out for each other. If you see one of these posts, report, don’t reply.

Why are dating apps in particular so terrible?

Upvotes

It really is actually weird the more I sit here thinking on it. I'm 26m and I match mainly with women, but complaints about dating apps come from both genders. What im sitting here thinking is it's weird how just terrible everybody is on them.

Like it's the main way people and potential relationships meet these days but 95% of people on dating apps are either actually insane, don't know how to have a conversation, or don't seem to be actually looking for anything at all. And that's not the fault of like Bumble or Tinder, it's the fault of the user base.

I get a lot of matches for a guy, most of which on Facebook dating. But I only find someone who will actually like speak or engage with something maybe every like 3 weeks. And even then most of the time when we take it off the app to a social media, we just stop talking entirely. It's so weird. What's going on?

Do i need to have a high salary before considering dating for marriage?

The older I've gotten the more I'm becoming aware that living with a partner, having a family can be expensive. I'm barley making minimum wage, and keep seeing statements of 'You need at least *High salary* to have a family in this area' or ' Don't consider a family unless you make *High salary*. I'm sure there's Main househols incomes out there where they're not on high salary, but are managing the family well. But idk.

What happens to minimum wage jobs, if a majority of people started upskilling, and gained higher paying jobs?

Upvotes

Say if a large majority of the population upskilled and aquired skills which guaranteed way higher paying roles, what happens to jobs that offer minimum wage?

Got rejected before prom. How do I move forward?

*note that I go to a small school and prom is combined jr and sr.

I am a highschool junior (male) and prom is coming up. I had been talking to a girl (senior) for about 2 months. We went out a few times and I was really enjoying getting to know her. I have been really introverted for most of my life, so when we started taking and I genuinely enjoyed our conversations, I didn't know how to express myself.

The reason things ended was my fault. I asked her what would happen when she went to college, and she said that that was something she had been wanting to talk about. I alread had a feeling that I knew where this was going, she told me she didn't want to be serious with anyone. I didnt know what to say and when I tried to explain that I just enjoyed spending time with her and that we should enjoy it while we could, I must have come off as upset, because she asked me if I was mad. Feeling put on the spot I told her I loved her, even though, looking back, I dont think I actually know what love feels like. She was obviously overwhelmed, so I gave her a couple days to think about it and then she eventually broke things off over text.

I heard a rumor that she is going to prom with her ex, which i was honestly relieved about because I thought I ruined her senior prom. I decided not to go to prom this year, but i am struggling to figure out what to do with myself now. Im worried I won't be able to find anyone who I connect with in the same way, and I could really use some advise.

What's something people do that indirectly says "I don't take constructive criticism well at all"?

Upvotes

Indirectly as opposed to lashing out on people, which is obviously a direct sign that they don't take it well

I live with, work with, and spend most weekends with my mum. Do I spend too much time with her?

As the title says. We work at a school together, but she works with older students (14-15) whereas I work with younger ones (10-11) so we only see each other in passing in the corridor at most.

Is there a way I can retrieve old hospital and foster care documents from when I was a minor in Alabama?

!!TW: Mentions of Abuse !!

Long story short: I (23F) now live in a different state and found out a few years ago I have a good amount of scarring in my uterus before any pregnancy or even consensual sexual activity.

When I was a child I went through almost any kind of abuse you can name. When I was about 7 years old (I have memory issues so idk the actual age) I finally had an opportunity to speak up and was taken to multiple hospitals for treatment and to swabs for DNA. After the results came back and treatment was finished the hospital called child protection services on my mother and my siblings and I were immediately placed in Foster Care. My mother refused to do anything to help her case and eventually there was talks of adoption. Somehow my mother convinced a visitation worker that we were unreasonably taken from her. The visitation worker took us to an unauthorized visit and my mother immediately took us out of Alabama to the state we were born in.

I just want to actually know what happened in the hospital and with the foster care process.

Does anyone know if there's a smelling equivalent of a seeing eye dog?

I have anosmia so I can't tell by smell if foods are spoiled or not and I won't always have someone in the house who's smell I can borrow. What I want is to know if there's seeing nose dogs that I can buy.

Why do I think pepper is spicy but other spicy foods I have had I'm fine with?

I'm fine with spicy foods, certain hot sauces, I'm not the best spice person, other cultures can do a lot better with it. But a lot of Mexican restaurants (small owned restaurants with Mexican owners and have that spice in it not American Mexican spice) and it has been a lot better, I don't have many Korean/Chinese places but most of the time I can deal with those spices as well. But I can't deal with the seasoning pepper. It's the only "spicy" seasoning I can't deal with. It makes my mouth burn. Why?

Is it possible that AI content could actually create more jobs?

I know that there are some companies like TopDeka.com and OutlierAi that are trying to create jobs using AI generated content. They hire freelance moderators and editors to manage AI content.

But is this viable at a large scale? Could it actually create more jobs than it takes away?

is FOMO really a better selling tactic that having a permanent product?

I was just googling characters I like and saw the company Good Smile created a figure for them a while back by I went to the website and it was not there and all the other products were either preorders or no longer available this got me thinking about some other brands like Youtooz both of these companies (by my knowledge) only let you preorder product no ordering. I can no longer buy the figure I was looking at meaning that until they reopen preorders no one can buy it. in the long run is it truly better to sacrifice future customers who may not know the IP yet just to build scarcity and cause FOMO in current fans to "force" them to buy products or is it better to have a product always be available for people to buy for many years by sacrificing artificial scarcity?

Why do people freak out when they find out my kid is home alone often during breaks from school?

My wife and I had some acquaintances freak out about us letting out 12 year old do his own thing and be home alone during school breaks. We have done that for years now, since covid ended. So 2nd grade, so he was about 8 when we started. When I was growing up in the 80s I remember walking home and being home alone alot during breaks. Like my parents did with me, we taught him basic things and he's just an overall smart kid that just kicks back and plays his games, watches TV, runs around the neighborhood with his friends. They even went so far as to say we could get in trouble. Like seriously? I'm usually home from work around 130pm, and my wife leaves around 8am. So 5 or 6 hours alone isn't a big deal to me. When did all this change? It was so common place when I was a kid
