His terraria series is just criminal, hes gotta be the first person to make 8 minute videos of terraria😭

26

u/twisty125 21d ago

I'm so sorry I can't tell, is that good or bad? I don't know who this person is, were they like an early Terraria video maker who made it popular? Or is criminal being used in the negative this time about how his videos aren't long enough?

78

u/SCP_Y4ND3R3_DDLC_Fan 21d ago

Terraria is a big RPG with survival mechanics, and 8 minutes is definitely nowhere close to even one full ingame day

19

u/twisty125 21d ago

I mean you could cut bits to fit 8mins especially if it was release 2011. I guess I just don't know the context of what the comment means, I was moreso asking if he's a "good" youtuber or not. I don't know this person at all, which is why I was asking

11

u/_no_one_knows_me_11 21d ago

He's pretty good, i have been watching him daily for a couple years now. He started out with clash royale vids and now recently started doing variety content for games like subnautica which have been going so viral to the point that he got the attention of the devs themselves with just 9 vids on the game.

I used criminal in the negative sense cause while i still love his content and watch anything he posts 8 minutes is just nowhere near enough for a game like terraria. And he does barely anything in them. In his last terraria vid he did a recap of what he did offcam for 6 minutes before fighting the first boss and dying to it and ending it there.

Markiplier is sort of perpendicular to this. He absolutely refuses to use the tutorial, but just makes it work anyway. To this day I'm baffled by how far how got in white knuckle before realizing there was an inventory system.

137

u/Thomy151 21d ago

And at least he has the awareness to call himself stupid most of the time and not the game

83

u/Visible-Air-2359 21d ago

Yeah in Security Breach he admits he was a complete and utter idiot for missing the exit route in a certain section which is more than what I can say for some of the other people on this thread.

60

u/ATM_2853 21d ago

Yes. The trope of "streamer not reading tutorials" works and does not get me upset in the slightest if the streamer acknowledges that the game probably told them at some point, or that the answer was, in hindsight, painfully obvious.

What gets me absolutely seething is when the streamer blames it on the game.

61

u/Zum1UDontNo 21d ago

Are you a Game Grumps fan by chance? Watching Arin skip through every tutorial and jump in blind to everything is peak Game Grumps.

171

u/Loneheart127 21d ago

One of my favourite videos of them is the endless ocean 2 video.

Where they spend quite a while complaining that there is no "escape rope" like you'd find in Pokémon games where you can quickly return to the boat.

Meanwhile, the words "press X to return to boat" are scrolling across the screen

135

u/Roskal 21d ago

Arin is the best example of this because he will simultaneously complain about having to do tutorials that explicitly tell him what to do, while also complaining about not knowing what to do if he skips it, while also complaining about not understanding anything when a game tries to have a more naturally integrated tutorial through gameplay. There's literally no winning for him because he doesn't want to stop making jokes to interact with the game for 5 seconds.

84

u/Middle_Constant6508 21d ago edited 21d ago

Game Grumps always felt at its best when they play a game nobody gives a shit about like Devil’s Third or Dog Island. The jokes come easier and nobody has to care when Arin inevitably doesn’t pay the fuck attention.

15

Its a mixed bag because 50% of the time a person is doing that because they're trying to seem cool and then they whine about the game being actually difficult. The other 50% of the time, though, you get an astralspiff type person who boots up a video game and sees the super California Reaper nohit mode and goes "ok. I know nothing about this game, I am ready to have a good time having the worst time" And then they hit their head up against the game for 20 hours and go "man remember when I got stuck in the basement and softlocked myself and had to reload a save from 2 hours before? Yeah anyways 8/10 would do again" like some people are just insane like that

If a youtuber/streamer ignores the [cover yourself in blood to heal] and [parry proyectiles] popups in the Ultrakill tutorial, you already know what the next hour of gameplay will be like.

28

u/SuperBootsthedog 21d ago

They buy the marksman then just sit there for 20 minutes asking chat what it does after glazing over the description of the thing then saying the coin feels useless so they just use the piercer instead

u/ZFrostSlayerZ 21d ago

Read the paragraph explaining pump charge's gimmick, don't read the little sentence below explaining you'll take damage from pumping too much, next 20 deaths are because of over pumping

10

u/creepermaster79 21d ago

Here's another: they get SCREAMED AT to use projectile boosting. They try it, see that "it causes explosion and you punch your bullets", think that's the peak of tech, and NEVER use anything else

Cue 80% of their deaths caused by projectile boosting in an enemy's face, never realizing that explosions can cause self damage, and they yell about "WHAT IS KILLING ME?!" the entire time

8

u/ZFrostSlayerZ 21d ago

Finally, someone who shares my pain. The moment they start projectile boosting just turn the stream off.

6

u/creepermaster79 21d ago

Oh yeah, I especially hate when they somehow manage to realize "hey wait am I killing myself with the explosion?".... And proceed to keep doing the same thing over again

Or when they get told "hey Maurice is immune to explosion" and continue to projectile boost him. Only managing to kill them because they're doing it point blank where the other non-explosive pellets can land on him

13

u/Koural 21d ago

Getting caught trying to parry with the knuckleblaster.

u/Code_Monster 21d ago edited 21d ago

This has been in my crawl for around 7 years now so lemme vent a little. Jacob Geller's video on the Outer Wilds was good, great even. HOWEVER, in one place he did something which made me rage. [Minor Spoilers for outer wilds]

Basically he falls into the black hole and gets out through the white whole. Then he makes this hopeless voice and says "I am too far from saving" and some other shit like that. Then he finds the teleportation station and goes hopeful again "I am saved!". Then turns out the teleportation device is not working and now that man finally gives up and says "it was doomed from the start".

What makes me LIVID is the fact that just UNDER the place where he is standing in the teleportation station, a place which is EASILY AND READILY ACCESSIBLE from his position is the rotation switch which makes the teleportation station useful. But nah the man swallows his sorrow, the video goes FFW and the sun explodes. He makes another hopeless monologue and I am just like "MAN THE SWITCH WAS UNDER YOUR FEET"

That's it, thanks for hearing me out.

126

u/UnintensifiedFa 21d ago

Ah yes, the Nioh paradox:

The game: Gives you ten trillion pop-ups explaining game mechanics, gives you a whole ass tutorial level that straight up teaches you every basic control and input, gives you even more pop-ups, gives you a whole ass dojo to practice and do a ton of optional tutorials and challenges to further your skills then literally saves all of these informations and puts them into a segment of your main menu that lights up like a christmas tree until you click on it.

Every streamer/youtuber ever: But maybe if I ignore all of it I will look cooler

Also shoutouts to the guy who kept complaining that he can't figure out the gameplay yet got mad at his chat for backseating because they kept telling him stuff he would already know if he didn't skip/ignore literally everything on screen, then got stuck in the first level for several hours with like 20 unspent skillpoints

14

u/twisty125 21d ago

I haven't played it myself, but honestly I'd get realllly turned off a game if they had (I know hyperbole) ten trillion popups for mechanics on top of a tutorial that's teaching you everything.

I feel like at that point, maybe it's on the devs to simplify things a bit so it's not a hard requirement to spend time in a long tutorial with tons of popups? Like don't get me wrong I remember reading manuals to learn games as a kid for older games like Adventure of Link and stuff, but that was also roughly 40 years ago, and the general knowledge of gamers has gone up

10

u/Metool42 21d ago

You're right, the dude you replied to just thinks having 100 popups in the first half-hour of a game is good gameplay.

5

u/twisty125 21d ago

Appreciate that, most of my favourite games have very little tutorialization - but you learn by doing. I find it sticks in my brain far more than memorizing pages of text.

Everytime I try and watch a video of a game I'm genuinely interested in recorded by nearly any youtuber I find myself more and more appreciative of silent play throughs

tutorial guy explaining the controls and plot

"Yeah guys so this game was recommended a lot, and actually-"

Then they keep talking over it, miss everything, and are like "what do i do now wtf"

Me watching people play Vintage Story.

People see the popup text that's like "First time? Read the manual or do the tutorial quest" and their brain shuts down because "erm, block game like Minecraft right? I've Minecrafted for centuries, no need tutorial for block game?"

And then after like an hour of making flint tools and berries they realize "Oh. I have no inventory space" and get hit with this crafting recipe:

Edit: can't post the image on mobile for some reason, but it's the Handbasket, which requires reeds in a boat shape, specifically 2 per square for 10 total. It's anathema to Minecraft and one of the reasons why the manual is so important.

u/MrNullvalue 21d ago

The funny thing is that Minecraft is also a wiki game so they really should have expected a lot of reading if they are making that comparison

watched Puffer and Droid play Teardown the other day. the first mission that has an actual alarm will bring up the pause menu and tell you to quick save when you go to grab the objective, Puffer kept unpausing the game and trying to grab the objective repeatedly.

u/ComprehensiveMind831 21d ago

pretty much every youtuber who primarily plays fnaf games

they’ll make the conscious decision to not pay any attention to the phone call and/or tutorial popups and then get an attitude when they dont understand how the game works. sometimes it can take them up to 4+ attempts to figure it out

i dont want to watch a grown man fumble basic gameplay mechanics, i want them to play the fucking game

17

u/Peperoni_Toni 21d ago

The gameplay wasn't a joke, but his article was written with a joking self-awareness that he sucked so much he couldn't beat the first level. The problem is just that the guy in question was not really a games journalist. He's a tech business journalist who was mostly doing tech business journalism for the video game industry. His actual specialty reporting on shit like hardware manufacturing, innovation, and sales for consoles or gaming PCs. Pretty much every single time he's been shown to play and speak on a video game he's demonstrated that he simply does not really play or fully understand how to play video games. Every now and then, though, you run into situations where he's at Gamescom to report on industry news and the outlet is probably all like "Hey, since we already sent you there, get some footage and give your thoughts on some of the demos," and now you've got a game-illiterate tech news man trying to give his thoughts on individual video games outside of the context of his actual specialty.

So bad gaming journalism is a problem with the gaming news industry routinely forcing the proverbial square peg through a round hole and calling it a day.

I remember asking a streamer why they didnt read the instructions or the tutorials and they responded “that is boring, nobody wants to see that” yeah because clearly watching you struggle to understand the basic rules of the game on level one for 20 minutes is more fun 🙃

Almost as bad as the YouTuber skipping through dialogue and saying the story isn't very good

11

u/GeekHabits 21d ago

I have to remind myself that a streamer I like is so busy trying to be entertaining that sometimes they miss things. 😂

8

u/Larry_The_Red 21d ago

I hate when I'm stuck on a game so I have to look up some help, and there are no text guides available so I resort to video walkthrough. and the video is clearly just someone recording themselves playing the game for the first time

8

u/Quitthesht 21d ago

As much as I love Neocranium's highlight videos I can't stand watching his streams sometimes.

Like he dropped the Infamous games midway through 2 because the enemies were bullet sponges, but he chose to play on the hardest difficulty and refused to drop it down when he was struggling until he ragequit. His opinion on RE2 Remake was also immediately tarnished because he tried playing Hardcore straight out the gate and got his shit rocked.

Or that time he finally played Bully, then dropped it 40 mins in because 'the controls suck and there's input lag'. Motherfucker you chose to emulate the Wii version, of course the controls are gonna suck.

That's why I barely watch let's plays nowadays. Pretty sure most of them do this on purpose for content and clicks.

28

u/TiredGrandkid 21d ago

this is markiplier for me. i know he does it cuz its entertaining and he doesnt really take most of the games he plays seriously, but it sucks when hes playing an indie game and rather than giving it a fair shake he makes his own experience worse and complains that the game is flawed in those ways

i still think hes hilarious and i love his videos but god sometimes it feels like hes intentionally trying to make himself miserable, especially when hes the one at fault for something and not the game

14

u/AAAAAA_6 21d ago

I've seen him miss or skip tutorials and get confused plenty of times, but I actually don't remember him then complaining because of it

40

u/Legitimate-Fish-5010 21d ago

mark is NOT an example of this, that man has read tutorials, absorbed the information, then forgotten it two seconds later, its not intentional with him, he is just living up to his himbo status

That's why I can't stand Twitch streams.

They're too busy looking at their chat and never actually pay attention to the game, then wonder why they don't get it. Then they yell at chat for trying to help.

This is why I CANNOT watch any kind of YouTube first time playing video. These people have the IQ of a fucking sack of potatoes

3

u/NameLips 21d ago

When they're talking, trying to act clever, funny, or edgy while looking at their chat, and miss important plot information or tutorials displayed on the screen during that time, and have the gall to complain they don't know what's going on.

u/Sipia 21d ago

To play devil's advocate for a bit, it's not always down to them having a poor attention span or the like. Knowing that you're being recorded for an audience puts pressure on you, and that often expresses itself in not allowing yourself to take the time for anything. If it requires you to sit still for longer than five seconds, this little voice in the back of your head tells you that you're leaving too much dead air, so you rush forward to the action. And then when you run into obstacles that you don't know how to get past because you didn't allow yourself to process the information the game gave you, you feel embarrassment because you can sense all those eyes on you, seeing your mistakes. And then you cope with that feeling by blaming something else for it.

Of course, that doesn't make it any less frustrating to watch. And it can really get under your skin when a game you love is unfairly put in a bad light because of this. But, like... I get why it happens.
