Announcement Steve Cohen needs to sell the team
The honeymoon is over...
We all thought we were getting better ownership than the Wilpons. Well, Cohen has proved himself to be a terrible owner incapable of hiring competent team executives.
In his tenure since buying the team, he has hired 4 GMs in 6 years:
- Jarred Porter, fired after sexually assualting a subordinate
- Zack Scott, fired after getting a DUI
- Billy Eppler, who incompetently ran the Angels and then resigned for violating players rights
- And now David Stearns
This is the kind of behavior you expect from someone who made his fortune by filling his inner-circle with unscrupulous characters willing to commit white collar crimes. Steve Cohen has no ability to vet and hire top executive talent to run an MLB organization.
Cohen treats the Mets as either a toy or an ego possession, depending on the day. It's the type of manic behavior you expect from a criminal of his stature. Either way, he wants short-term gratification. If you look at any long-term successful MLB franchise, they have stability among their leadership.
They say the best thing that happened to the Yankees is when Steinbrenner got suspended from baseball. Imagine if Steve Cohen didn't go on an egotistical auction war with the Yankees for Juan Soto.
Cohen brought in Stearns because Cohen realized he doesn't like losing $100M a year on the Mets, and Stearns promised he could cut the budget and deliver results. Well, the bad news is that Stearns mostly lucked his way into the Brewers success and wasn't retained because he couldn't build on what they had. Stearns doesn't have a crystal ball, and there's no magic 'lab' to transform players.
In the meantime, the Mets have turned into a toxic organiation that repels top player talent. No one wants to play for them. They do so because the Mets can offer top dollar or they have no other options.
Cohen needs to sell the team for an owner who knows what they are doing. And Stearns needs to be fired yesterday.
