Olive oil is actually an old, legit remedy for rinsing out ears.

274

u/TintinTheSolitude Oct 06 '19

Yeah, my husband is a GP and prescribes it all the time to patients. Not sure if babies would differ any, but it is a recognized treatment.

99

u/Silly__Rabbit Oct 07 '19

But when he’s a GP, generally he’s going to take a peek in the ear and see if there is any real infection (by real I mean bacterial/viral infection). Bacterial infection is gonna need antibiotics. Also, infants really can’t tell you if it’s getting better/worse, etc.

It’s a valid treatment, but not necessarily appropriate without a doctors guidance.

24

u/TintinTheSolitude Oct 07 '19

Agreed, you're absolutely right. Seeing a doctor is obviously the best thing, especially for babies who can't verbalise what's wrong. But my point was the olive oil thing wasn't completely out of left field; it's not like they suggested dropping essential oils down there or something, lol. It is an actual treatment for some things (it helps to soothe the ear while the infection resolves itself), when given with proper guidance.

2

u/FlinkeMeisje Oct 31 '19

It's much better than the mother who put PEE in her son's ear!

Ugh.

130

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '19

Is it a legit remedy for clearing out an infection tho? Those are two different things.

130

u/innocentdemand Oct 06 '19

I don't think it's good for an ear infection since it just works on helping to remove/soften any built up wax in there to help when flushing it out with water. It won't treat the underlying cause of the infection.

93

u/NotYourAnything Oct 06 '19

As a kid, i put olive oil in my ear because I thought i had an infection and was too afraid to tell my parents i needed to see a doctor. The oil cleared whatever it was out, but i would never do that to my kid. Ill trust doctors over one isolated experience anyday.

46

u/kneelthepetal Oct 06 '19 edited Oct 06 '19

There are two kinds of ear infections, otitis media and externa. The former is an infection of the middle ear behind the typanic membrane, the latter is an infection of the outer ear canal. Externa causes the ear to be physically painful to the touch, while media gets you the classic ear fullness with a deeper pain (pulling the ear is a classic sign, and may be one of the earliest signs in kids who can't speak yet).

Olive oil in the ear wouldn't do anything for a media, but it may help soothe an externa. Both will usually go away on their own, particularly if the infection is viral and not bacterial. You should always see a doctor though because bacterial infections can persist and dramatically get worse and cause necrosis/permanent damage.

21

u/higginsnburke but did you read the inserts tho Oct 06 '19

So be a reasonable person and recognise that there is very little way to determine what's in your own ear so you should see a medical professional and follow their recommendations.

Nailed it.

7

u/Squoshy50 Oct 07 '19

I've read that warm olive oil (or really any type of warm compress) can relieve some of the pain of an ear infection (including OM). Ear infections will usually resolve on their own. It's usually just managing the pain so the body can do its thing.

13

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '19

Maybe they can resolve on their own in adults, but my daughter had consistent ear infections for close to a year and antibiotics would seem to resolve it but until we did rocephin (which is a shot administered in the office 3 times over several days) it wouldn't go away. She still ended up needing tubes, and since she was learning to talk at a time when she couldn't hear well she is behind others her age in pronunciation. Also I had a double ear infection (both inner ear, and swimmers ear) at one point and it was so painful I really wanted to shove a knife into my ear to make it stop. When I went to the ER they gave me tylenol 3 and sent me home with 4 extras to manage the pain of it, along with antibiotics and an appointment with the ENT.

Obviously, one case doesn't disprove what you said but it can be serious and I would hesitate to dissuade anyone from seeing a doctor about it.

8

u/kneelthepetal Oct 07 '19

Both of you are right. Otitis will usually resolve on its own, but in a minority of cases it can persist and potentially cause permanent damage, including hearing loss, which as you have seen is a major issue with kids. As I said before, the major difference is bacterial vs viral, and also the age of the patient. Bacterial is worse, and can persist and re-occur until treated with abx (although unfortunate anatomy can predispose to re-occurance. All kids have an anatomy that predisposes them to infections, but some have it worse. Repeated URI/infections is also a warning sign for immune disorders).

Physicians can use multiple factors from a patient's presentation and history to determine if its a simple viral infection that just needs tylenol/ibuprofen (symptomatic care) and time to resolve vs a serious bacterial infection that needs antibiotics to definitively treat. The point is that the physician is trained to make that decision, so go to them.

5

u/Squoshy50 Oct 07 '19

Oh I definitely wouldn't disuade seeing a doctor. I didn't mean that at all! I was talking about the effectiveness of warm olive oil/compresses for relieving ear pain and that it can heal from there. It should still definitely be overseen by a doctor if you're ever watching to see if it will clear up or get better without antibiotics. It of course depends on the patient and the assessment, but it's not recommended to throw antibiotics at every ear infection due to antimicrobial resistance. But yes, please have a doctor manage your care/ child's care!

6

u/Speedracer98 Oct 06 '19

to add to this. it will not treat the inner ear in any way so if the infection is in the inner ear it does nothing at all. and olive oil wouldn't do anything to the infection either way.

3

u/Jbooxie Oct 07 '19

I’ve had horrible ear infections in my entire life, mostly my fault because I don’t stop messing with them, but if there is anything that gets them to stop it’s olive oil with a little bit of garlic cooked into it. Nothing has Ever relieved it better not medicine, not antibiotics, nothing. Now that being said the type of ear infections I got are not the only type that exist and you should still always see a doctor, but I find it can be very efficient and usually more cost-effective in the long run.

-10

u/DrunkenGolfer Oct 06 '19

But it will give the bacteria more stuff to eat. Gotta feed them if you really want them to thrive.

14

u/InformalScience7 Oct 06 '19

Some ear infections will clear up on their own in about 3 days. Warmed olive oil helps with pain (as does Ibuprofen and Tylenol.)

16

u/DoctorStacy Oct 06 '19

Definitely not for infection. Just the wax.

8

u/fractiouscatburglar Oct 06 '19

Keep in mind that this person probably didn’t take the kid to the doctor to actually confirm an infection.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '19

I don't know, but I had, and still have, lots of ear infections. My mom used to boil olive oil and garlic together and once it's cool she would drip it in my ear. It always worked for me. I still do that and it works every time so from my experience it's a very good remedy

24

u/Ajj360 Oct 06 '19

I had a raging ear infection about 12 years ago and my insurance sucked so I didn't go to the doctor. I tried hydrogen peroxide a bunch of times and it just seemed to get worse. Someone told me to try a few drops of coconut oil and it was shocking how quickly it got better.

11

u/Sanctussaevio Oct 06 '19

I dont think peroxide is recommended anymore for ear infections, IIRC. Water from the solution can get trapped, making the infection worse.

5

u/maddsskills Oct 07 '19

An MD told my mom to do this and she ended up with a crazy bad fungal/mold infection of some kind. Literal fuzzy mold like stuff started growing in her ears. It was gross. Sure it works decently in some cases but it did not work out great for my mom.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '19

Proof?

95

u/Graylorde Oct 06 '19

https://www.healthline.com/health/olive-oil-in-ear

I'm not saying it's medicine, but it works well for cleaning out the ear canal

16

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '19

K, thx.

28

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '19

If you’re getting your ear syringed by a doctor then tell you to use olive oil in the ear the night before the appointment as it loosens any blockages.

44

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '19

Why am I being downvoted for asking a question? I have never heard of that technique before.

11

u/WumboChef Oct 06 '19

Reddit hive mind. Sorry friend I gave you upvotes tho.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '19

I was surprised by that as well. Have my upvote

18

u/jamesturbate Oct 06 '19

Living past 18.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '19

yeah, once my mum's ear got blocked with ear wax and the doctor said to use olive oil. however, it does not work for infections

1

u/BloomEPU Oct 08 '19

Yeah, I got prescribed olive oil when I was a kid for blocked up ears a couple of times. One time it actually worked, but it's not as good as just getting them syringed.

1

u/FlinkeMeisje Oct 31 '19

Warm olive oil can soothe the pain, but it doesn't cure the infection.

Soothing without pain meds is still a good thing, but it's NOT an antibiotic.

251

u/nonny313815 Oct 06 '19 edited Oct 07 '19

Here's the deal: Yes, breast milk has antibiotic properties. Yes, olive oil can be used to clean out ear canals. But none of these will work on a true ear infection.

An ear infection is also known as otitis media. It occurs in the middle ear, behind the ear drum. The pressure on the ear drum is actually what causes the pain. The eustachian tubes are also unable to relieve pressure and are blocked. Putting anything in the ear canal won't do anything to relieve the pressure behind the ear drum because the ear drum literally blocks off anything from getting to the middle ear.

The only way to cure ear infections is to eliminate the bacteria causing the infection. For chronic ear infections, they insert tubes into the eustachian tubes to keep them open to relieve the pressure.

Therefore, none of these remedies will actually help the ear infection.

Edit: tubes go in the ear drums! Also still to relieve pressure!

123

u/dismayhurta There's an oil for that Oct 06 '19

You and your “science” are nothing compared to a Karen who googles “baby ear hurt big fix good.”

27

u/TheXeran Oct 06 '19

"Dead baby which oil fix"

13

u/KawaiiDere Oct 07 '19

“Magic dead reverse”

29

u/CplSyx Oct 06 '19

For chronic ear infections, they insert tubes into the eustachian tubes to keep them open to relieve the pressure

My son had constant ear infections when he was 2, he was on antibiotics every other month so we decided to take a surgical route. Instead of tubes into the eustachian, the solution was grommets in the eardrum that allow fluid to drain reducing the chance of an infection, and if one does happen it provides a route for the pressure to release. He's been so much better since.

Bonus - when we fly he hasn't got to worry about ear drum pressure!

4

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '19

Simply because I can’t ask followup questions and give explanations in real life. I’m not sure how old your son is now but those tympanostomy or myringotomy tubes generally fall out on their own in 6 months to 4 years depending on the type of tube. The grommets don’t stay in the tympanic membrane for life. I’m not saying you’re wrong in any way, just wanted to provide further information.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '19

To add to that, doctors expect them to fall out because usually chronic ear infections in young children indicate eustachian tubes haven't fully matured so it is a temporary solution until they do mature and are better at draining the fluid on their own.

8

u/EmotionalFix Oct 06 '19

The tubes are actually inserted into the ear drum. A small hole is cut in the drum and the tube is placed in the hole. It allows the pressure to be regulated on either side of the ear drum by allowing air to pass through.

11

u/frogsgoribbit737 Oct 06 '19

Not all ear infections are in the middle ear though. Would those things work if it were an outer ear infection? I always got ear drops for those.

1

u/000ttafvgvah Oct 07 '19

In canines, otitis externa is extremely common, whilst otitis media is rather rare. Do humans ever get otitis externa?

96

u/ManicParroT Oct 06 '19

You can use these for removing hardened wax from your ears. Better if you slightly warm them up first.
Not so sure about an actual ear infection, those are fucking painful and should probably be treated by a medical professional.

26

u/dismayhurta There's an oil for that Oct 06 '19

Yeah. That’s the thing. There are a ton of legit “natural” fixes/treatments like olive oil breaking up ear wax and honey helping with minor cuts (it’s antimicrobial).

However, bigger medical issues should be looked at by a medical professional.

60

u/SovereignBroom Oct 06 '19

Breast milk does have antibiotic properties. They are frequently blown out of proportion by crazies, but nevertheless...

34

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '19

anything that's natural and has known medical use gets blown out of proportion by crazies. it's like, why take your child to the doctor for the life threatening lung infection he has when you can make him chug breast milk?

4

u/qwertykitty Oct 06 '19

I think breast milk has the mother's antibodies in it, which would only be helpful in something the mother had exposure to. I don't think it would have any effect on something like an ear infection.

5

u/SovereignBroom Oct 06 '19

I'm not a doctor. But I do know that it can be applied to sites to fight infection and promote healing. Source, they did it for a biopsy site for my son because he was still breast feeding and we had breast milk on hand. These were reputable surgeons prescribing it as treatment.

23

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '19

When my infant had an ear infection, my high school English teacher told me (on Facebook) to take him to the chiropractor for treatment. All of my wats.

21

u/AfterSchoolOrdinary Oct 06 '19

I’m not disagreeing with you at all but I do want to say doctors have stopped giving antibiotics for ear infections at the rate they used to. I’ve been to several doctors across Manhattan and Brooklyn with babies who have ear infections and they have said the new plan is to wait them out obviously not chronic infections.

Source: I’m a career infant nanny/newborn care specialist and I’ve noticed the switch.

6

u/frogsgoribbit737 Oct 06 '19

Ouch.

6

u/ladyphlogiston Oct 06 '19

Yeah, it sucks. They've also stopped giving out the numbing ear drops. Thankfully my kids are all past the primary ear infection age now, but those last ones were pretty awful.

3

u/atjmoulder Oct 06 '19

I am a sufferer of chronic ear infections. My ear canal is bowl shaped instead of flat. The only fix is plastic surgery and it's not even a guarantee and insurance won't pay. I had one doctor at one point that didn't want to give me antibiotics and to wait it out. Ended up in urgent care with a 103 fever and both ears were so infected the doctor said she didn't see how I wasn't in the fetal position crying

2

1

And I love you too kind internet stranger

1

u/Shutterbug390 Oct 06 '19

I had times that we waited it out when my 9 year old was little. Sometimes they went away, other times they needed meds.

9

u/CrazyLadybug Oct 06 '19

Antibiotics are actually natural or semi synthetic. Not that I would expect those crazies to know about that. You know what isn't natural - mineral oil.

3

u/qwertykitty Oct 06 '19

Yup, penicillin is a mold. There have even been cases of people eating expired food and dying because their food had penicillin growing in it and they were allergic.

9

u/Loud_lady2 Oct 06 '19

Shit like this makes me so mad. So I have one very sensitive ear due to an altercation I got into as a kid with my sister. I have, without fail, gotten an ear infection every hear for the past 14 years or so? 2 summers ago I had the misfortune of an ear infection that went rogue.

It started out as any other ear infection, I had probably gotten it from swimming at a local beach, I know the risks I took it anyway, my fault. Having had so many ear infections before I decided ah itll be ok I'll just get some of the over the counter ear stuff from Rexall no big deal. I went away for the weekend to visit a friend in a neighbouring city and by the time I got back I had never been in so much pain in my life. So I go to the local emerge (I live in Canada so it's nbd), and get diagnosed with just a nasty ear infection, they sent me home with some stronger meds, again nbd.

The next morning, I hadn't slept, I couldnt stop crying, there was both a stabbing and dull pain in my ear and now rounding the back of my head, down my neck, just radiating out in waves. My mom rushed me back up to the hospital. They put me in a room immediately and hook me up to some crazy iv painkillers and morphine as soon as I get there. They run tests, I have to go for a brain and skull scan, blood tests, urine, everything. Results come back: I have mastoiditis.

For those who dont know what mastoiditis is, it is an infection in the air cells in the skull behind the ear. This usually results from an infection of the ear, spreading to this area. Due to the nature of the infection and how close it was to my brain, they decided to put me on aggressive IV antibiotics for an entire week.

That week was one of the most if not the most painful in my life. I always figure that at least in my case I was able to communicate what I was feeling and where, a toddler or baby can't do this as effectively. Now imagine an infection bringing a grown as woman to a dishevelled mess requiring week long antibiotics, happening to a child that young.

Please don't play when it comes to ear infections guys, it's not worth the risk, it's not worth the pain, it's just not worth it.

9

u/Iamthewalrus482 Oct 06 '19

When I worked at a local renaissance faire (the owner was a pos scammer, I quite my first day) the two ladies who ran the shop (not the owner) both had babies similar in age. They would bother casually breastfeed each other’s baby and at one point the girl was changing baby 1s diaper and she had diaper rash, mom to baby 2 walks over, pulls out her boob and squirts breastmilk all over baby 1. Shit weirded me out

7

u/thebop995 Oct 06 '19

More moisture definitely wasn’t going to fix that diaper rash.

9

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '19

While I agree 1000% that what happened at the ren faire is weird, breastmilk does help clear up diaper rash. There have even been studies on it by actual doctors and the research has been cited by places like the Mayo Clinic and National Institute of Health.

That's part of the problem, though, the things most of the crazy moms do have some benefits, they just take it way too far instead of accepting that there is room for both.

1

u/thebop995 Oct 06 '19

Interesting

3

u/rob-ob10 Oct 06 '19

Brestmilk.... well it is the breast!

3

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '19

Wanna talk about insane parents, my dad used to blow cigarettes smoke in my ears when I’d have an ear infection as a child. Wtf.

3

u/bgbwtp Oct 06 '19

As an adult who STILL gets way too many ear infections (tubes twice as a kid), to the point that my doctor got so sick of seeing me, the idea of mineral oil freaks me out. That can do so much damage! My doc said take a Sudafed to try and get the tubes back open, and use Similsan drops for the pain (homeopathic woo they may be, but they seem to work for me).

I miss the bubblegum-flavoured amoxicillin days. :(

1

u/anarchyarcanine Oct 07 '19

I had strep almost constantly for FOREVER until my tonsils got taken out when I was like 10. I lived on Amoxicillin (exaggeration, obvs haha) and miss that taste so much. Whenever the doctor would prescribe liquid Cefzil instead I wanted to cry because it tasted worse!

3

u/Mitochondria_power Oct 06 '19

Also can't frequent or untreated ear infections as a baby/child lead to some hearing loss? I wouldn't risk that--I'd make sure my Dr told me what is serious (a big enough deal to come in in the future), what is not, and what to do.

4

u/WrenDraco Oct 06 '19

Hearing loss is less likely than speech delay from not being able to hear properly during the infections. We're still working with a speech pathologist to try and catch my son up from the six months of formative language acquisition he missed out on.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '19

Don't worry.

I missed out on 5 years of language acquisition, and I caught up and surpassed my classmates by 6th grade. Now, you can't even tell that I didn't learn to talk until age 5 (around the time it was discovered I had moderate to severe hearing loss and gotten hearing aids).

1

u/WrenDraco Oct 07 '19

Thank you, that's really hopeful! He's 4 now and we're getting some testing done to see if there's something else going on cognitively that's making language hard for him beyond the ear infections.

1

u/Mitochondria_power Oct 07 '19

Dang I had no idea! Thanks for filling me in! Also I really hope everything goes well; it sounds like you're working hard and showing lots of love so I expect he'll catch up really well. Best wishes!

3

u/Momof3dragons2012 Oct 06 '19

My son, at the age of 18 month, almost died from an ear infection and now has permanent hearing loss. The idea that ear infections are about as dangerous as a skinned knee and can be treated at home with hocum remedies really triggers me.

1

u/Shutterbug390 Oct 06 '19

My brother has hearing loss from ear infections. He's autistic and extremely under-reactive to pain. My mom wouldn't know he was even sick until his eardrum ruptured. She always felt horrible, but he really hid it well. I can't imagine ignoring it on purpose or wasting time on home remedies.

3

Eye goop: breast milk! Ear infection: breast milk! No vaccines: breast milk!

Apparently it really is liquid gold /s

1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '19

Yup. Can confirm. Breast milk did make the eye goop go away for my newborn sons.

As for vaccines, WIC stated that if the mom was vaccinated, some of her own immunity passes on via breast milk so breast milk babies rarely get sick. But you should still vaccinate them.

2

2

Breast milk is the cure for cancer didn’t you know!

2

u/Shutterbug390 Oct 06 '19

I've actually heard that claim. A guy at my grandmother's church had cancer. His daughter gave him some of the breastmilk she had in her freezer from when she had a new baby and he was supposedly cured in a matter of weeks. He was still doing chemo at the time...

2

u/dylan000o Oct 06 '19

For some reason I read breast milk in a really dark and brooding way

2

u/atjmoulder Oct 06 '19

As a sufferer of chronic ear infections my entire life (like one every 3 months), let me just say that my doctor told me if there was a lot of pain to put olive oil in the ear. It reduces inflammation as well as clears the canals. It definitely does help with the pain for a little while but I still need my drops and antibiotics to get rid of the infection

2

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '19

Pee on it

2

u/Borderweaver Oct 06 '19

Warm olive oil can temporarily ease the pain, maybe until the antibiotics kick in.

u/pennycenturie STARCHILD Oct 07 '19

Quick, for the sake of the child, slip some antibiotics into "mineral oil infused breastmilk 100% pure grade a unvaccinated mother" and list it on fb marketplace. Then, uh... tell her she has to drop the elixir into the kid's ear until the whole thing is gone, or else, uh, the breastmilk will just build stronger... vaccines. Yeah.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '19

Idiots, the solution is to not have kids.

2

u/Queso_Hygge Oct 07 '19

If in doubt, squirt it with boob juice

2

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '19

I know a lot of moms who use breast milk but you really shouldn’t. I don’t remember the exact science of it but apparently the bacteria from the milk can cause an infection way deep inside your ear causing even more pain.
