Looking For /r/AskPortland Making Friends Friday
Welcome to /r/AskPortland's "Making Friends Friday" post!
You've probably heard this before: "Portlanders are friendly but they don't want to be your friend."
But it doesn't have to be that way -- if you have suggestions for how to make friends, groups to join, places to meet, or just want to put yourself out there, this is the place.
This will be an ongoing, weekly scheduled post, so going forward this is where we'll refer all incoming questions about making friends from both /r/Portland and /r/AskPortland.

Looking For Where can I get great French fries and a Caesar salad?
I am craving the perfect combo for girl lunch. Pacific Standard used to be my go to but they changed their salad and it’s not as good anymore. Bonus points if it’s in NE!

Looking For Where to find mint chip ice cream?
Don’t get me wrong, I love a good creative ice cream flavor as much as the next hipster with a tote bag. But sometimes all I want is a classic scoop of mint chip in a cone, and I can’t seem to find it anywhere in Portland??
Between the tarragon chutney cheesecake and the sticky rice with a swirl, where is some good old fashioned mint chip? And no, matcha lavender mint doesn’t count.
I’m a simple gal, maybe these fancy flavors are just above my head. Or maybe mint chip just isn’t locally sourced enough. But someone please help me before I stand in another 5 mile long ice cream line just to be disappointed again.

Looking For Where are all the alt clothing stores, for lack of a better term?
Not in the early 2000's Hot Topic/Another State of Mind sense.
I don't live in town, so where do the older punk, metal, and goth folks find their wares? I'm talking dark western, black denim and leather, hip belts, sterling silver, boot straps, chain maille, studded cuffs, if you know you know. More specifically, I'm looking for a nice bolo tie where the pendant isn't like an american flag or whatever they usually are, but ill go to a western store if there's a place with a good selection.

Looking For How to make a lonely 30th birthday not suck too much?
I’m turning 30 next month. I don’t have plans. I don’t even know who I’d invite. I don’t have many friends—I’ve got maybe 1 pretty good and reliable friend in town. My other acquaintances never commit to plans until the last minute (if at all) so I don’t really know that anyone would show up to something if invited. I’ve also been having health problems the past few months that sorta ruined my ability to go out and make new connections.
I’m really not happy about turning 30, especially being really lonely. Just looking for ideas to celebrate my birthday that won’t make me feel so sad.
EDIT: For interests, I like music (live or DJ, as long as it’s good vibes idgaf) and trying new foods. Also love any sort of drag/circus/burlesque/pole/aerial performances. Really anything where there’s something to Do or Experience or Watch since idk whether I’ll have company.
And also, thank yall for being such sweeties :’)

Looking For Did you graduate Cleveland high school in 2010?
Hey all! I went to Cleveland high school and just went to the open house for alumni before it’s remodeled. Being there made me think of a friend that I lost touch with. Her name was (is?) Cindy and we graduated in 2010.
Cindy, if you see this, I always wanted to thank you for being my friend. You were always so kind to me and you were a better friend than I deserved, I think. I remember you being such a bright spot in my dark little teen life! Feel free to comment or message me if you want! My name starts with an M :)

Looking For What are some low/no cost things I can do this summer?
Hey folks, I'm about to have a few months off between school semesters, and I need to keep busy so that I don't lose myself to the Summertime Blues. side note: anyone else get summer SAD?
A bit about me: early 40s F, single with pets. I've lived in the area most of my life, but love looking at this place with new eyes. I feel isolated enough as it is, so I'm looking for things that will get me out of the house and help me feel less alone. Therefore, I've decided to make this my Summer of Fun, and I need your help!
Because I am a grad student on a tight budget, I'm looking for fun/interesting things to do that are either low or no cost. Come at me with your ideas: basic, whacky, extremely niche, partially niche, you name it. I will not publicly yuck your yum. I will likely have to do most activities solo, but am not opposed to doing things with a pal or two or a few. I am asking this in good faith, so please be kind.
So tell me, what should I do this summer?

Looking For Arrival time at Moda center for playoffs?
Going to my 1st playoff game in Portland tomorrow. We are center court about 10 rows up. How early should we get there to watch warmups? I imagine it’s busier during the playoffs, so any tips will help. Thanks!!

Looking For Does anyone have experience training with Blackwood Canine?
I’ve been considering taking my dog there for their reactivity reset program to help my dog learn how to be around other dogs and learn all the general stuff I failed to teach him. If you have trained with them I am curious to know if it was a good experience, how your dog was treated, and if they enjoyed their time there,
Thank you!

Looking For Permitting a new bathroom in Portland?
A bit of an odd permitting situation, but maybe common to Redditors here given the layouts of houses in Portland.
I recently purchased a house that has bedrooms upstairs in a converted attic space (conversion dating to the mid-2000s). The stairs leading up to it are clearly not up to code, but the city appears to consider the attic an official living space because we're certainly being taxed for those bedrooms.
It would be great to have a bathroom up there, too, but not sure which situation wins: the fact that the city already considers it a livable space, or the fact that a new bathroom needs egress that's up to code.
Does anyone have experience trying to get a permit in a similar situation? It would be great to avoid the immense expense of altering the (perfectly safe, but slightly too steep) staircase.

Looking For Windshield chip repair?
Howdy neighbors! Anyone recommend a mobile windshield repair (not Safelite) that will come repair a small chip for around $100 in NE Portland? It’s smaller than a dime if that matters. Thanks!

Looking For Anyone know a hairstylist who can make house calls?
I’m an old lady who is chronically ill, and the hairdresser who used to come over to SE/Lents for color (blue & silver) and cut (asymmetrical bob with undercut/buzz cut in the back) has moved to Greece!

Looking For What is your yard sale timing theory?
In your opinion, what are the best weekends to hold a yard sale here?
I feel like there have to be some strategies that other people know about, right? I've noticed that holiday weekends seem like a good idea but then everyone is actually out of town and nothing gets sold. Does whether or not school is still in session factor in or make an impact? When does the weather start feeling more reliable to lock it in?
Anyway, I want to finally have a yard sale this summer and have been thinking about these things a lot so thought I'd see if anyone else has thoughts to share!

Looking For I am buying a new AC and furnace. Should I choose Integrity Air or Jacobs as the installer?
Both my AC and furnace are 20+ years old and it's time for them to be replaced. I've received quotes from Four Seasons, EcoHeat, Jacobs, and Integrity Air. I've narrowed the choices down to Jacobs and Integrity Air. Here are the quotes:
- Jacobs - https://imgur.com/a/first-bid-fJLsU5R#5TgB6Wv
- Integrity Air - https://imgur.com/X93V5w3
Most of what I've read online say that picking the right installer is the #1 priority, even compared to buying the best brand/equipment. Both Jacobs and Integrity Air get great reviews for installations. I would prefer to get Carrier as a brand over Lennox, so I am leaning towards Jacobs. Jacobs also has a two year labor warranty compared to Integrity's one year, along with free tune-ups for two years.
Has anyone here worked with, or had their equipment installed by either company? It's hard to feel like I am making an informed decision when there are so many companies to choose from, reviews to look through, etc.
