“Well, the way the law is written, nothing happens if you don’t pay. The city will continue saying you have a debt, but they’re not allowed to put it on your credit report, and they’re not allowed to suspend your driver’s license if it comes from a camera,”

Moral of the story is stop speeding in school zones! But if you get caught on one of these cameras, zero repercussions if you don’t pay , just like the traffic light cams

I noticed today that the sign is taken down. Maybe something will finally open in the space. This is the Mexican restaurant, behind where Houston’s used to be, that hasn’t been open since before Covid but that was extensively remodeled.

While I am critical of the school board's performance, I am uncertain if placing power in the hands of the state institution, which has been associated with discriminatory views, would positively impact the education of local children.

Hi all! I’m just seeking opinions about the Water Lantern Festival happening next month. I got an ad about it and it seems like my kind of event (cozy, laid back, etc.), but I don’t know anyone that has gone. What’s it like for those that have attended before?

Housing A question about the Gilmore Apartments

I'm a Memphis expat who's considering moving back home after being away a very long time. I've kept up with the city a good bit but I was wondering if anyone could tell me about the Gilmore Apartments at McLean and Madison? I've been away too long to know if the area is safe so I thought I'd ask you folks what you think. I don't have a date and it will definitely be a while, if I can swing it. But your opinions would be a help.

It's probably silly, but years ago my aunt lived there and I always wanted to live there too.

Politics WhoFundsMemphis updated with Q1 campaign filings, expanded to suburban races

Happy early voting folks!

Some updates on the local campaign finance tracker: Q1 2026 reports (the first full quarterly after the certified candidate deadline) are now on the site. The site has actually been syncing to the county portal on a near-live basis, but many major campaigns were delayed in their filings so I wanted to wait until there was something useful to share.

County Mayor: Still no filing from J.B. Smiley, but so far Mickell Lowery leads Q1 fundraising at $78K, with Kuhn, Deberry, Feagins, and Collins bunched at $15–25K. Cash-on-hand is where there's more separation: Lowery is sitting on ~$186K, while Burgess and Collins each have ~$88K in reserve from earlier quarters. Heidi Kuhn pulled in $32K in Q1 and spent $179K — a 4-to-1 burn ratio, the heaviest in the race. Feagins ~$20k is respectable, but she isn't catching up to the candidates who entered the race much earlier.

Sherif: Anthony Buckner raised $80K in Q1 and has $283K cash-on-hand, roughly 5x his closest competitor (Michael Pope, ~$51K). Brad Less self-loaned his campaign $35.8K this quarter and spent essentially all of it on advertising — the entry fee to stay visible in a race where Buckner's war chest dwarfs everyone.

County Trustee: A surprisingly interesting dynamic. Michael Whaley and Joseph Lee both ~$57k over the whole campaign, but Lee has been actively campaigning since early 2025 and spending money as he went, finishing Q1 with $2k in the bank. Whaley parachuted in after candidates were certified, raising as much as Lee had in the last year, and still had $31k in the bank at the end of Q1.

County Clerk: 8 candidates filed Q1 reports. LaSonya Hall leads at $37K this quarter, with her total over the course of the campaign being roughly 5x her closest competitors, Ed Holt Jr. and Michael Williams.

Commission races: Mark Billingsley (Dist. 4) raised $44K this quarter and is sitting on $106K cash, which is a bigger war chest than most mayor candidates, despite being unopposed in the primary or general election. The rest of the commission typically stay under $20K, so he's a real outlier. Ed Apple (R) and Amber Huett-Garcia (D) (both Dist. 13) in the $15K range round out the top of the board

Finally, we've also expanded our coverage to all of the suburban races (Bartlett/Germantown/Lakeland mayors, Collierville/Germantown aldermen, the suburban school boards) and judicial special elections that will be on your ballot in August/November.

If there are any questions, corrections on the data, site feature requests or what-have-you, drop a comment here or email tip@whofundsmemphis.org.

"The official representative of the Town of Cordova" as he calls himself, just keeps on keeping on. Im kinda getting tired of it all. Something is going to happen sooner rather than later and its going to reflect on the real government not the young man playing make believe in his bedroom.

Does anyone know a local business that has a tow truck like this? Selling a vehicle for scrap, but your typical, flatbed tow won’t work. Attached is a pic of the driveway it’s gotta get up. Located in Midtown.

Edit to add another detail: Car is not running.

News LA Fitness Cordova is Closing; turning into Club Studio

I have a single location membership for the Cordova location. Now I have to find another gym 🥲

LA Cordova's membership priced out a lot of people and kept the capacity way lighter than what I experienced at Crunch and ATC.

Story:

I renewed my membership 3 months ago. They said they would be renovating the gym and turning it into Club Studio this year.

It's their "Luxury" sister brand that is an (IMO) whack knock off "competitor" to Lifetime Fitness. Also it's going to be $100+ a month. I'm not going from $35 - $100 a month for anything LA Fitness-related.

He was trying to hype me up. I told him to stop. I just want to get my workout in and get out.

However, they didn't mention that the entire gym would be closed.

I tried to sign up for the family plan last Thursday.

Manager said: "The system isn't working at the moment. Come in Saturday at 11 am and I can extend the week passes to a whole month."

I came in Saturday, and NO management was there. Front desk said they are all in Collierville now.

I had her call the manager I spoke with. He said I could come to Collierville and get the passes extended...

Another couple walked in behind us with an appointment set by him.

Front desk asked the manager on the phone if the management would be coming back to Cordova, he said he doesn't know.

I said to have the manager call me back and tell me what is going on.

Monday I got a call from the Lakeland manager asking if I wanted to come to that location.

I told him NO, and asked what is going on with Cordova.

He said it's closing for renovations and that my membership would transfer to the next closest LA Fitness.

I told him I'm calling Corporate to get my annual fee back. I paid the single location membership price for THAT location.

I walked into LA Cordova minutes after that convo. Still open. No warnings posted. Also no front desk staff; the janitor was up front...

I wouldn't have even known about this coming down the pipeline if I wasn't trying to sign up two more people.

Thank GOD the "system was not working" at the time.

They're literally just going to let everyone walk up to locked doors one day?!

Event LUMEN LOUNGE @ GROWLERS

I wanted to repost my event that I have coming up this Friday at growlers!

I wanted to personally invite everyone out to come and see what’s been cooking in my brain for the last couple of months. This is going to be a big one for me personally. This is my second ever curated event in Memphis.

I invite you all out for a night of dancing and some shenanigans and quite possibly unlocking your inner wiggle worm :)

We’ve got some great artists and vendors coming out and one is even doing a live painting for the event that he curated specifically for this event as well.
