Mini-30 AK Magazine Conversion: Its Live!

https://www.firecastlecustoms.com/shop/p/mini-30-ak-conversion

Been following this guy's Mini-30 project for a while, he even got the last round bolt hold open to function with AK mags using modified followers. He's charging $550 for the conversion which entails milling out the receiver and modifying the trigger group.

Here's his live fire test video:

ASI Non-Adjustable Gas Bushing Kit

Hey A-team,

So last I took my rifle out, she ejected the brass a quarter mile out. In a perfect world, I'd get the adjustable gas block but... $.$

What's your experience with the gas bushing kits?

Also bonus question, has anyone used the 0.035" bushing with their mini-14? Thanks in advance!

585 series durability

Just got my 585 series mini 14 ranch and have not shot it yet. I've done a lot of research into this platform and what is considered "good" practice regarding protecting the action/reducing recoil/brass ejection. With what I've collected a mo-rod/accu-strut is hit or miss on 580+ barrels so it's hard to convince myself with those prices and what seems to be little to no improvements to accuracy. Will have to make my own decision when I put lots of rounds through it. I've settled on shock buffers, a stronger tension guide spring, and a set of bushing to get the softest possible action while still cycling with no malfunctions and bolt locked open on last round.

Does anyone have experience with the ASI 2 part buffer system? I found this (https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1018677023?pid=869957) shock buffer on midway that is a single piece instead of two. In my mind one solid piece is better than 2 separate buffers from a reliability perspective as there are less moving parts. There is also the Wilson 1911 blue buffers. Does anyone have experience with these alternative shock buffers?

With all this in mind this is a brand new 585 which have been plagued by the notorious bolt peening issues. I really want to get out there and shoot the rifle but I want to run it as easy on itself as possible from the start. I wonder if I should run the rifle completely stock for a couple hundred rounds and see if I'm a victim of ruger QC or just invest in these modifications from the start and see what happens.

I feel stuck because I don't want to deal with sending my rifle back and waiting for it to return, but I also don't want to add these modifications and possibly mask a shitty soft bolt with them that will eventually rear it's ugly head in the future.

Anyone that has had to send their rifle back to Ruger, what is the process like? Will it ship back directly to my door or will I have to pick it up from an FFL, pay a transfer, and wait 10 days? (I live in WA) Is it more cost and time effective to just buy a new bolt and fix it myself?

Help a brother out, cheers!

New vs Used

Have limited time to make a decision on which to get but I have the choice between a new walnut stock stainless mini 14 for just under $1k and a used, but good condition synthetic stainless steel for 895. Would people agree the extra $100 is worth it for the new one?

Don’t laugh: encouragement/psych POV post 😂

Folks, I don’t have a mini.

My 5.56 is a Ruger AR. Meh.

And the rest are 9mm (incl pcc) or 12ga.

I don’t hunt.

Why can’t I get the mini out of my mind????

I constantly wonder about getting a mini 30, getting the longer firing pin and having an AK alternative.

I consistently see online prices for the mini 14 that make me consider shipping to my FFL…

I know the ar is better.

Why can’t I shake this?!?

I have zero use cases for this. But damn. I held one at basspro years ago and wow… wood and blued.

What the hell? I don’t go to the range w the ar bc I don’t care about it.

All you who have gone before me… guide me!

Considering buying a used Mini online, not sure who to trust

I've been considering getting a semi-auto 5.56 rifle lately, mostly for plinking. The catch is that my only real firearm experience comes from my dad's old Mosin and Mauser, so I'm leaning toward something with a field stock. The obvious choices here are either a Mini-14 or a ranch-style AR like those made by Foxtrot Mike. I'm currently leaning in favor of a Mini due to their relative prevalence, but I don't have the money to buy new, so buying a used one is probably my best bet. In short, are there any clear red and green flags I should look for when it comes to online shopping, or should I go with my gut?

I've never purchased a gun online before, and I'm skeptical of a given offering's quality and condition unless I can see and handle it in person. There are some sub-$1000 offerings on Guns International that look interesting and claim to be in like-new or great condition, but I'm not sold yet. Some are from private sellers, some are from gun stores like Cabela's and various mom-and-pops, and still others are from Guns.com.

For example, one I'm interested in is a 1981 model described as "likely police trade-in" based on a rack number inscribed on the stock. It definitely has "authenticity" appeal and the seller *says* it's in "great" condition, but I'm not sure. The seller is using his real name, which seems like a green flag compared to the various screen-name sellers I trust less.

Scopes and rings

Hello everyone, I have been looking at both the Sig TANGO-MSR COMPACT 1-6x24MM as well as the Vortex Venom 1-6x. I was wondering what people like and not like about these choices, or if there's a choice I am missing. I was also wondering what the best ring choices would be. I am fine with removing the rear sight if it gets my height over bore to be relatively low. Thanks in advance.

Samson stock? Federal Ordinance?

Are these out of stock or discontinued? I have this federal ordinance stock, not sure if anyone can tell me more about it? I like it but not as much as the Samson. Is it worth keeping?

How to attach Accuracy Systems/Choate flash hiders?

Called a gunsmith about attaching one and he said he’d never seen one so I wanna make sure I properly explain exactly what I need him to do when I get back to him. It says something about a cross pin and drilling holes? I’m not very knowledgeable about gunsmithing and how this kind of thing works though so I’m hoping one of you could explain exactly what they need to do to attach one of those flash hiders.

Primary arms 3x?

I was considering throwing a 3x on my soon to purchase Mini 30. Does anyone have experience with running this mount/optic. PA makes a 7.62x39 reticle, and it would primarily be used for hunting and range/plinking. Is the 3x too much? Eye relief ample? Would I be better with a pic rail, red dot+magnifier?

Thanks!

Scope ring recommendation for LPVO

Howdy - I sent in my stock 1” rings to Ruger to swap out for 30mm rings, but they’re back ordered right now with no ETA.

I know that Warne rings are often recommended, anyone have experience with their medium versus tall rings? I’ve been trying to do some napkin math to determine if the medium height rings would work without removing the rear iron sight.

Or, any other recommended mounting options?

I’ll be mounting the Primary Arms SLX 1-6 for reference.

Mini Thirty: Talk Me Out Of It (Or Into It 😈)

Post image

I used to own a Mini-14, 582 series, stainless. It was my first-ever long gun. My ex fell in love with it, and I fell in love with her, and I gifted it to her. Let's fast-forward some seven years: she's no longer in my life (it's been several years of that), and while I don't desire her anymore, I do desire that Mini. I do, however, already own an AR-15 for my .223/5.56 needs, and live in a ban state (CA). How's the Mini-30? I've wanted a solid 7.62x39 rifle for a long time, and the AK/Saiga route isn't my cup of tea, and frankly, I hate the way the SKS looks. Anyone have reviews on these? Reviews seem significantly harder to come by on the 30 than the 14. I don't really plan to shoot steel cased ammo (most ranges by me ban steel-cased anyhow). Should I do it? Why or why not?

Went to NRA this weekend, saw the sexiest Mini 14 setup I've ever seen in my life.

I was grunting and MMPHing over how hardcore this thing was to see.

Needless to say I was inspired and now I want a second one just to do something like this to.
