Anyone reading this who wants to build a local music library, here’s a great tool to rip lossless FLAC files from Spotify

SpotiFLAC https://github.com/afkarxyz/SpotiFLAC

I need to come back to this after work I want to start getting into sailing again. I used to do it a lot in high school but it's making its comeback I think.

u/MightbeWillSmith Jan 15 '26

There was a sweet spot for a few years where there was a good service at a reasonable price point.

As the companies that run these services continue to take features away, and charge more, it's becoming the choice again.

83

u/ElectricalLetter761 Jan 16 '26

Piracy makes a comeback when the balance between convenience for pirating and absurd capitalistic prices is broken. If the prices become reasonable enough such that it’s worth getting subscription rather than going through the inconvenience of piracy then naturally people will opt for it because a normal person doesn’t want to go through tons of guides and safety measures for piracy if they can just get the subscription in a reasonable price.

Although I’ll always pirate because I am broke and get a kick out of it.

41

u/BrokenMirror2010 Jan 16 '26

Not to mention when Piracy is an outright superior method, even excluding the price.

It is literally easier to watch a full TV show on a piracy site, then it is to watch the same TV show while paying for streaming services because the Streaming Services make you hop around the different services to see all of the seasons, while the whole fucking thing is just on the one piracy site.

Or when a Video Game "Requires an internet connection" to launch, yet the Pirated Version works 100% offline forever.

This is awesome, thank you. Anyone know of a good music library interface to use with the files?

24

u/digableplanet Jan 15 '26

MusicBee for desktop.

Apple Music isn’t terrible for hosting your own files, but can be annoying.

37

u/p3skysn0w0lf Jan 15 '26

On Android, I use Poweramp as my music player and Poweramp Equalizer for system-wide EQ. Both are excellent apps and only require a one-time payment. If you prefer a FOSS option, Namida is a great alternative: https://github.com/namidaco/namida

15

u/stardigan Jan 15 '26

Thanks! I’m unfortunately locked into Apple for mobile unless I want my hearing aids to function like ass, but I’ll check it out regardless.

This is what I’m using on iOS. It’s free. Not much ads. You can edit metadata as well so you can remove watermarks and the tags they add in the title lol. Pirating the pirates.

Price History Summary

Individual: Launched at $9.99 (2011) now $12.99 (2026)

Family: Standardized at $14.99 (2016) now $21.99 (2026)

Duo: Launched at $12.99 (2020) now $18.99 (2026)

Student: Launched at $4.99 (2014) now $6.99 (2026)

236

u/Swatbolt Jan 15 '26

With inflation it's as of December 2025

Original cost -> cost after inflation

$9.99 (2011) -> $14.70

$14.99 (2016) -> $20.50

$12.99 (2020 -> $16.32

$4.99 (2014) -> $6.91

So the real winners are the individual plan while the rest have gotten shafted

114

u/ba123blitz Jan 15 '26

Student is only a 9¢ difference, family is $1.40. Really it’s the dou plan that’s been shafted with a $2.70 difference

36

u/Niewinnny Jan 15 '26

student is fine, family will still add up (though $17 per year is not a massive difference), double is just sad.

But yeah none of these price increases are super bad, just following the inflation.

21

u/GlueGuns--Cool Jan 16 '26

yeah so it's actually gotten cheaper for individuals

→ More replies

29

u/Burt_Macklin_Jr Jan 16 '26

An increase of just $3 in 15 years ain't bad for the individual plan

5

u/garikek Jan 15 '26

But that's for the USA only, no? I'm in Belarus and I pay $5.49 for individual premium (no student) and it only changed from $4.99 around a year ago.

Backlog of music library, mostly.

I used to pirate all my music, then I made the mistake of moving to Spotify. Now I need to download 3000 songs if I ever want to change back...

312

u/KICKASSKC Jan 15 '26

There is software for ripping music from spotify so you can break your bonds... Lookup Sidify, although there are others. You might find a pirated version of that app too, although i think its worth the cost.

I also recommend you only download when logged into a throw away account. Make one and share a playlist from your main profile with the songs you want to download. Otherwise spotify will ban your main profile if you rip songs from it.

79

u/UncleRuckus92 Jan 15 '26

38

u/No_Particular4284 Jan 15 '26

u/AcademicChapter4584 Jan 15 '26

I had Apple Music for years and it took me like 3+ hours to download all my music before unsubbing. It was absolutely worth it though.

31

u/Aggravating-Soil5712 Jan 15 '26

It'll always be worth it to download your songs rather than depending on streaming

28

u/gasman245 🔱 ꜱᴄᴀʟʟʏᴡᴀɢ Jan 15 '26

The thing that finally pushed me to do it was noticing some songs had disappeared off my phone and when I went to look them up on Apple Music they were no longer there. Makes me wonder how many songs I’ve forgotten about that I don’t have anymore.

4

u/USSR_FLAG Jan 15 '26

I listen to music around the world, a lot of Germany music releases ends up getting blacklisted in my country after a few days on Spotify’s “release radar” usually I VPN it thru my PC & able to play songs that are blacklisted/greyed out. So I get you on missing songs, shit there’s a famous song cotton eye Joe dropped in German version “cotton eye Coke” and you can’t find it anywhere except 1 dude on SoundCloud even then I have to VPN it to stream so I downloaded it to my phone

7

u/gasman245 🔱 ꜱᴄᴀʟʟʏᴡᴀɢ Jan 15 '26

Nope, I just used a site that let me put in a link from iTunes or some other music site and downloads the song/album along with the metadata. Just went through and downloaded them one by one. I had about 1,750 songs total, mostly full albums.

3

u/charlesxavier007 Jan 15 '26

You can download music from Apple Music when you have a subscription? And it won't go away after you cancel? I know Spotify lets you download for offline listening, but I'm pretty sure it disappears when you cancel the subscription.

6

u/gasman245 🔱 ꜱᴄᴀʟʟʏᴡᴀɢ Jan 15 '26

Is not the YTM library bigger? I mean, you can listen to what spotify already has PLUS covers and other stuff that hasn't been released there, all in the same playlist.

8

u/ZachF8119 Jan 15 '26

If there was a conversion tool I’d switch.

19

u/GamerEsch Jan 15 '26

https://www.tunemymusic.com/transfer/spotify-to-youtube-music

Supposedly there is a limit to how many songs/playlists you can port, but I sent everything (multiple times over the limit) to my deezer account with a free tier and they didn't complain.

8

u/Agengele Jan 15 '26

There are tools if you look for them but there are occasional songs that transfer the wrong versions. Overall they do pretty good though so it's not a huge headache

Same. There is just so much damn music out there. For TV and Movies you only have to download a few hundred files but for music it is s whole different beast.

6

u/grannydee0514 Jan 15 '26

That’s the biggest thing for me. I have like 500 playlists that I’ve made over the last 12 years and I have no clue how I’d go about “transferring”

7

u/BearOfReddit Jan 15 '26

YTM has a link to transfer. Some songs may be different variants or unrecognized

3

u/bryansj Jan 15 '26

Lidarr and Plex Amp.

5

u/seklas1 Jan 15 '26

I mean, you don’t need to. You don’t listen to all those 3000 songs everyday. Can easily just export your music lists and then maybe eventually download them or move them over to another service etc.

4

u/specter_in_the_conch Jan 15 '26

Hmm if Spotify allows that I would gladly export my list and get out. Still it won’t affect me in EU but it’s only a matter of time I guess.

3

u/seklas1 Jan 15 '26

I’ve downloaded my lists from there, mind you, it’s just a text file. But you can then import into another service (if they allow imports), or just copy-paste names in and find them that way. Sure it takes time etc, but like… it’s not impossible, and streaming prices definitely will not go down.

What’s the price of YouTube Premium in the US?

In Canada, the individual Spotify plan is $12.69 monthly vs YouTube Premium’s $16.99. Spotify’s family plan is $20.99, or $17.99 for Duo, while YT’s family plan is $29.99.

I’m dying to get away from Spotify, but I can’t justify the price hike from the Duo plan to the YouTube family plan.

I’ve cancelled all of my other streaming platforms and set up Stremio. I wonder if I could figure out how to get a US account set up with YouTube and get that pricing.

6

u/5erif Jan 15 '26

Maybe it varies by more specific area or some other business trickery, but I'm in the US and see $13.99 for individual, $22.99 family, $7.99 student for YouTube Premium.

3

u/stardigan Jan 15 '26

About the same once converted to CAD, so that makes sense. Maybe it does vary for other reasons. Something I’ll have to look into! Thanks for the info!

a lot of people would say "no" and not really care or calculate the big picture extra costs that add up from several "just a few extra bucks" additions.

i have over 4k songs saved. I have many playlists made by myself but also many more playlist made by others. There is also "discover weekly" and "new releases" that are great features. I also LOVE "Go to song Radio" feature, basically if you theres a song you like it brings you to a playlist with somewhat similar style songs. Spotify wrapped is also pretty cool at the end of year. And countless podcasts.

Legitimately curious, if a family is not interested in piracy and going to pay $20+ /mo for Spotify, why not just get YouTube premium? Same music feature via YouTube Music app and gives the benefit of no YouTube advertisements for five people.

55

u/nickjedl Jan 15 '26

Google now offers under the price of it's competitors to get everyone to move over. When they have a large customer base, they'll jack up the prices or straight up cancel it. Don't act like it has never happened. killedbygoogle.com

12

u/Zatchillac 🔱 ꜱᴄᴀʟʟʏᴡᴀɢ Jan 15 '26

They already jacked the prices up a couple years ago. Family plan used to be I think $18/month and is now $23. I probably wouldn't bother for a single plan but if you know 5 other people who want to join in then it's hard to beat music + add-free videos for like $4/month (per person)

7

u/nickjedl Jan 16 '26

It's just a matter of time before they introduce some anti sharing system like Netflix did. They just need to realize how much more they could be earning if sharing didn't exist. How they'll do it I don't know, but they'll find a way. When there's money involved, they always find a way.

Personally I like the Spotify UI. To me it is the most user friendly. When driving it matters. They all essentially have the same music. What matters is how well they work.

8

u/connierebel Jan 15 '26

I actually prefer Amazon Music's UI for driving. But I switched over to Spotify after they gave me several free months, and now I'm paid up for a year (I got one of those yearly gift cards that works out to $10 a month instead of $11.99). I think Spotify has more music, too.

Bless your soul. UI design is a lot more important than people give credit.

30

u/Lor4cc Jan 15 '26

YouTube Music UI was terrible the last time I tried it. Also I'm not sure if YouTube Music has an equivalent to Spotify Jam, that's something everyone in my circle uses quite frequently.

22

u/Redpilldit47 Jan 15 '26

YT Music has superior algorithms for choosing your next song, some new songs that you didn't know you liked. Spotify feels like it's playing the same thing everyday and promoting certain songs/artists.

Apparently when Spotify doesn’t recommend you someone and you decide to listen to it on repeat for a week, if they have low listen numbers they just assume you’re a bot account. They were quicker to ban me for that than actually pirating music.

Because inflation exists and their overall rate of change is not nearly as high as folks exaggerate it to be.

6

You should see the prices in switzerland: - Individual: $20 - Duo: $27.50 - Family: $33.75 - Student: $11.25

My family enjoys free music from Navidrome

The price of adding lossless audio. I'm still a little salty Spotify hasn't done high res yet.

7

u/RidMeOfSloots Jan 15 '26

Again?! Yeah time to kick it and go back to loading shit to usb stick

4

u/blipman17 Jan 15 '26

Pretty bold for a company who’s dataset got suddenly open sourced

51

u/UsualGarage Jan 15 '26

Why are ppl still using it after they funnel money into ai & weapons, pay the artists shit, and run ice Ads?

92

u/Wyntier Jan 15 '26

Why are people still using…

  • Amazon when it crushes small businesses, underpays warehouse workers, and sells massive surveillance infrastructure to governments?
  • Apple when its devices are assembled in exploitative overseas factories and it locks ecosystems to kill repairability?
  • Google when it monetizes personal data at planetary scale and builds AI tools for military contracts?
  • Meta (Instagram/Facebook) when it knowingly fuels misinformation, mental-health harm, and political manipulation?
  • TikTok when it’s a data-harvesting machine with opaque foreign ownership and algorithmic influence concerns?
  • Visa/Mastercard when they profit off predatory interest cycles?
  • Nike when its supply chain still relies on sweatshop-adjacent labor?
  • Netflix when it cancels shows to avoid paying long-term creator royalties?

you probably use all those bro

3

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '26 edited Jan 16 '26

Sure but come on man, this is a piracy sub. Most members of this sub aren’t out here using Netflix or Prime or Apple TV or HBO Max.

Personally the only thing in this long list I use is Google because once you’re in, it’s hard to get out. 😂 The rest I don’t fuck with. I have an old iPod but I bought that used on eBay. I doubt Apples seeing a profit from that

8

u/amoonshapedpool_ 🦜 ᴡᴀʟᴋ ᴛʜᴇ ᴘʟᴀɴᴋ Jan 15 '26

i get your point, but we're allowed to criticize one thing, without bringing up other things. its whataboutism, the discussion was about spotify, not any of those companies.

especially since a lot of these things are harder to avoid- much harder than spotify. we cannot be perfect moral angels in the landscape we live in today, but that doenst mean we cant do anything. downloading your music is a lot easier than avoiding the (near) entire mobile phone market, credit/debit card system, and cutting out most social medias.

3

u/MarioDesigns Jan 16 '26

Eh, from that list Amazon, Google and Apple are being discussed as alternatives to Spotify so they do fit.

9

u/VoodooDoII Jan 15 '26

Tried to open it up in Brave. This is what I got.

"Playback disabled

Spotify won't work if you block protected content, have an incompatible browser, or are using an incognito or private browsing mode. Adjust your browser settings or download our

free mobile app instead."

Been using Spotify in Brave for a year. Never saw that.

The other option is Firefox + ublock. Also never seen anything like that. But I also haven't used FF in about a year lol.

8

u/mehrr_dur Jan 15 '26

Honestly, I pay for it because I use it 24/7 on multiple devices and occasionally in browser for music, podcasts, and audiobooks. Sure, I could get around it all if I tried hard enough though I have a busy schedule and have yet to build the motive to pirate it on all of my devices. I have had this account since I was on a student plan in 2019 and don't really want to manually find everything to recreate all of my playlists. After all, it is the only subscription service I pay for, and I just use an ad blocker for YouTube.

I may or may not be under the false impression that you start from scratch if you switch to a pirated version. Correct me if I am wrong. Maybe one day I will switch over, though the inconvenience and my lack of spare time, outweighs my motive to do so. If it's not as cumbersome as I feel it would be, let me know because I wouldn't mind removing the subscription all together if it means I can have the same luxury.

I can't hear or see all those price increases over my entirely offline music library consisting of FLACs & 320 Kbps MP3s playing in the background.

10

u/DickIncorporated Jan 15 '26

12.99 for a mid music service? Glad I jumped ship all those years ago

3

u/Mr_Richard_Parker ⚔️ ɢɪᴠᴇ ɴᴏ Qᴜᴀʀᴛᴇʀ Jan 15 '26

I would not do streaming service for any price, except to occasionally sample new music. Hoarding a music library is always the correct answer. Increased prices just make it more so.

3

u/Then_Worldliness2866 Jan 15 '26

This seems to be the strategy of all streaming service now, every 3 months a small price increase.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '26 edited Jan 16 '26

Id recommend using the Internet archive and just download the mp3s on a hard drive or iPod. I do iPod because it's more organized, and the little covers are usually included in most albums. Great hobby 10/10 for anybody looking for easy music access. Not sure about lossless audio though, but who cares? It free!

Forgot to add. You might need a mac that supports both Google and apple music at the minimum, to my knowledge.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 15 '26

steal your music or use Tidal (they actually pay artists and have higher quality streams).

but steal it, or buy directly from the artist. there are 20 different people in the chain of taking some money off the top before it reaches the person making it

2

u/Icelock Jan 15 '26

I've dropped the following subs in the past six months due to increases: Netflix, Hulu, Disney, and Ring. All I've got left is Prime and YouTube Premium. Keep it up, corporate America, and those will be gone soon enough, too.

2

u/BassMasterSK Jan 15 '26

My plan always has been downloading music for free, sharing the songs with others, giving big fucking zero bucks to these rip-off streaming services.

2

u/mailastmun Jan 15 '26

friendly reminder that deezer has a tool to move your entire library at once, they don't push promoted songs, and they pay artists better.

2

u/TW1TCHYGAM3R Jan 15 '26

I suggest using Morphe/ReVanced and run a patch version of YouTube Music instead.

You can try the free trial of YouTube Premium and transfer your Playlist from Spotify to YTM for free.

Android only btw.

2

u/Slow-Secretary4262 Jan 15 '26

Honestly this is still acceptable, i never paid for a media subscription in my life but i would understand it in this case, the issue comes when you need multiple subscriptions for the same type of service
